I’m seeing a lot of enjoyably quippy Letterboxd reviews saying that this is a funny movie about priests gossiping, and that isn’t untrue—but it also neglects to mention that it’s a very earnest and profoundly soul-stirring picture about the tension of faith, the desperate search for certainty, and the true purpose of the church in the world. the ending touched me dearly and I think it’s brilliant. this is the kind of well-staged ”men in rooms” drama that feels like it could’ve been made in the 1940s, or the 90s. it’s going to be an all-timer for me without question; I felt seen by it in ways that are too personal to describe now. will write more soon.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
the consummate 3.5 star movie. handsome, well-acted, consistently intriguing. never brushes greatness, but never less than watchable. i find the ending a little ludicrous (the idea that these men for whom the election is a matter of the most intense gravity would hand it to a man none of them knew existed a few days prior.....it feels a little pat, like The Narrative leaves out the back so that The Point can come in through the front). and Fiennes' ambiguous "crisis of faith" feels like it was pulled straight from the catholic movie playbook; his struggle to be an effective "manager" is compelling, his struggle to.....be able to pray (?) is underdeveloped and intrusive. still, it's a deeply likable film. the kind of thing you tell your parents to go see when they ask you for recommendations. nothing wrong with that!
