Solid movie about an extremely normal guy just being a cool dude. Flying planes, dating teenagers, drinking milk, making movies, taking about titties and llamas, having crippling disorders (that can be traced to visions of American success ingrained in childhood) exacerbated by an industry and culture that celebrates wealth and "progress" above anything else.

I feel like the movie uses both Howard's OCD and wealth for great effect without delving into the explanation/development of how either became such a crucial part of his life, and that's a little frustrating to me– but god, what a film! Nobody makes a breezy three hours like Scorsese. The ending breaks my heart. Also the first moment of the movie is them spelling and saying "quarantine" repeatedly. It was so unexpected we screamed. Who'da thunk the movie about the reclusive billionaire germaphobe would be hittin different right now.

This was a lot more entertaining and a lot crazier than what I was expecting. The editing was not doing it for me in a lot of cases which I suppose is the point, it makes things feel pretty claustrophobic, but it just felt sloppy at a certain point. This is such a 2004 movie....

A tantalizing, old-fashioned film about a rich genius who somehow always existed as an underdog, eventually crumbling into the disparate pieces he constructed of himself. So intricate and operatic, and yet its grandness never feels generic or cheap. It's a film about hollywood as much as it is a Hollywood production. One of Leo's best roles, too. The evolving cinematographic techniques are the icing on the cake.

Not the best, but maybe my favorite Scorsese - almost Greek mythology with Wagnerian scope, one of the best films on the correlation between ambition and madness, Icarus flying too high into the sky and crashing - many times we see the sun obliterate the rest of Scorsese's frame in the flying sequences. Also Scorsese's mastery of music is at its best here - I'm thinking precisely of the arrangements of the Howard Shore's score for the flying sequences, the ominous drones portend doom early on, from the first time we see Hughes make a plane innovation. Real life: living in the moment, making movies, being in love, and losing ones mind. Of course Hughes' dream plane is called the Hercules..

I know I'm in the minority with my opinion that The Aviator is Martin Scorsese's absolute best movie in over twenty years, probably since Goodfellas. It's a jaw-dropping marvel to witness in all aspects of filmmaking.
There isn't a single performance that misses the mark (unless you really want to count Gwen Stefani), the score by Howard Shore is one of his absolute best, the visual effects are tasteful, the cinematography is gorgeous and graceful, and the subject Howard Hughes is in many ways as obsessive and tireless as Scorsese himself. He was simply born to make a Hughes biopic, and he hits a grand slam in every possible way with this one. It will always land among my favorites from the legend.
Oh, and it contains the best work from DiCaprio, too, in my opinion.
