Celebrity Big Brother 21 (UK) also known as "Celebrity Big Brother: Year Of The Woman"[1] is the 21st series of Celebrity Big Brother.

Background[]

Possible Cancellation[]

After a drop in ratings in 2017, Channel 5 boss Ben Frow stated that he would like to take Big Brother UK off of the air.[2] The summer's civilian series fell at an all-time low average at less than one million viewers a night where most of the viewers watched ITV2's Love Island. “A year ago, everyone was saying 16-34s aren’t watching television. Love Island has proved that if you get the right programme, they will come", said Frow. “I’ve got Big Brother on the channel which is, you know, decline decline decline. Still a useful programme. But this is a really good time for me to take a step back and look at a programme that was the be all and end all for our 16-34s and go, what are we gonna do?” Richard Desmond head of the channel when executives decided to revive the format back in 2011 after Channel 4 canceled the series.[3] “That was a contract that was there before I came,” said Frow. “I would be much happier with a channel that did not have Big Brother on it.” However, Frow would go on to say that he did, in fact, enjoy the rating boost that Big Brother brought to the channel. Back in 2013, he said at the Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival that “Big Brother’s very important, I think it was genius, genius, genius of Channel 5 to take it. My only concern about it is that it’s such a big beast, and we need to manage the big beast because we can’t become over-reliant on it".[4] After the twentieth celebrity series, it was revealed that Big Brother ratings were the highest for the network.[5]

Casting[]

It was initially announced via the press that the producers would be planning an all-female cast for the one-hundredth anniversary of the Representation of the People Act 1918.[6] The Act would allow women the right to vote in the United Kingdom.[7] Producers stated that they were going to change their casting archetypes by casting more opinioning women rather than the recent stint of reality stars and models.

The casting twist was later revealed on December 4, 2017, with an all-female launch. However, men will be introduced after a predetermined time. Channel 5 released a statement saying:

"In January 2018, as the nation marks 100 years since women won the right to vote for the very first time, Celebrity Big Brother launches this series with an all-female cast of celebrity housemates in a salute to a centenary of women’s suffrage on Channel 5. Presented by Emma Willis, Celebrity Big Brother will initially explore how the all-female housemates interact, from politicians to performing artists, as they enter the house first, ahead of the celebrity male housemates. Over the course of the series, as the male counterparts enter the house, the housemates will take part in a series of entertaining tasks and hidden experiments which will test their – and our – assumptions, challenge gender stereotypes and reveal fascinating truths about what it is to be a woman – and man – in the 21st century. See what happens when women hold the power, as Celebrity Big Brother January 2018 is set to be celebratory, surprising and insightful."[8]

Eye[]

The eye was revealed on December 5th by Emma Willis. The eye is a human eye with a multicolored pupil. This is the first time that a Channel 5 eye has been based on a real eye. This is also first time since Celebrity Big Brother 7 (UK) to be based on a real eye.[9]

House Design[]

It was announced by sponsor Pink Casino that the house design would be all pink to celebrate the women's theme.[10] Pink Casino later removed the page.[11] However, this rumor was debunked when the house pictures were released.

House[]

The house pictures were released on December 18th revealing a classic looking house with a subtle cozy theme.[12]

Theme[]

Sponsor Pink Casino announced along with the house design that the theme would build off of gender stereotypes. They released a statement saying:

"Over the course of the series, once the female and male housemates are in the house, Big Brother has a lot of entertaining tasks and hidden experiments to say the least, to test them and challenge gender stereotypes for a big reveal in what it is like to be a woman or a man in the 21st century. See what happens when women hold the power as this Celebrity Big Brother is certainly going to be surprising and insightful so make sure you’re ready to tune in!"[13]

Launch Audience[]

The show's ticket distributor ApplauseStore announced that the launch would only feature females stating:

"This year, to celebrate 100 years since women won the vote, Celebrity Big Brother kicks off with an all-female house! To mark the occasion, we are looking for women to pack our launch night audience.

We’re looking for females from all walks of life, all professions and with a diverse mix of interests! If you’re interested in joining our strong female audience then request your free tickets to join us now!"[14]

Possible Name Change[]

Prior to Rachel Johnson leaking in her column that she would appear on the show, she stated that producers were going to temporarily rename the show "Big Sister" due to the all-female twist. She said, "It was because this one said that the new series was all about female empowerment and 100 years since women got the vote. It was going to be called Big Sister."[15]

Twists[]

  • All-Female Launch: Similar to Big Brother 8 (UK), the season launched with an all-female cast with men introduced later in the series.
  • Late Men Entrance: Also similar to Big Brother 8 (UK), the men will enter later in the series.
  • Women vs. Men: In relation to the season's theme about gender, the male and female housemates will compete in a series of tasks in order for them to stay in power over the opposite gender. The winning team would have the power to nominate, while the losing team would lose their rights to nominate.
  • Face to Face Nominations: Face to Face Nominations happened twice in the series, the first nominations were for females only, face to face, where they could nominate both men and women. The second occasion was during the Wilderness Week where the winning squad had the power to nominate. Just like the first one, they could also nominate both men and women.
  • Backdoor Eviction: A special eviction twist that happened on Day 20, the winning team would have to pick among the losing team's members on who they wanted to evict. The chosen housemate to be evicted will then be leaving the house similar to an "ejection" manner rather than the usual eviction manner.
  • Save and Replace: The winner of the save and replace task will be able to save one nominated housemate and replace it with another.
  • Triple Eviction: On Days 25 & 29, three housemates were evicted rather than the normal or double eviction.
