Big Brother Portugal 5 is the fifth season of Big Brother Portugal. This is the first civilian series to air in seventeen years.

Background[]

On November 30, 2019, registration for the show opened. It was later revealed that twenty housemates would participate in the show, and there would be one housemate per district.^[1] The show was set to premiere on March 22, 2020. However, on March 16, 2020, TVI announced that the season would be postponed until further notice.^[2] Because of the postponement of the season, the one housemate per district casting was scratched.

On April 17, 2020, TVI announced that the premiere of Big Brother Portugal 5 would be on April 26, 2020. However, for the first two weeks of the game, the housemates would not live in the Big Brother house, but instead in their own confined apartment, with cameras watching them 24/7. After two weeks in the apartment rooms, all surviving housemates that test negative for the COVID-19 virus would enter the game as housemates.^[3]

On May 3, 2020, it was revealed that there would be nominations, and one housemate would be evicted before they could enter the Big Brother house, meaning that seventeen out of the eighteen housemates would earn a spot in the house.^[4] In addition to this, two more housemates, Renato Ponte and Teresa Silva, would enter quarantine after the seventeen remaining housemates enter the house.^[5]
