Big Brother Canada is the Canadian version of the international phenomenon Big Brother. It is based on the American version of the franchise.

Big Brother U.S. has always been available to the Canadian audience since it premiered in 2000. Later in 2003, Quebec, the French province of Canada, decided to produce their own version of Big Brother based on the French version called Loft Story. After airing Loft Story through 2009, Quebec decided to change to Big Brother Quebec 1.

Then in May of 2012, Shaw Media announced that Big Brother would come to Canada in 2013, and would be broadcast on Slice. Later Shaw announced that Live Feeds would be free on the Big Brother Canada website. It then premiered in February 2013. Due to being based on the American version of the series, the base format was identical, featuring a Head of Household who makes the nominations, a Power of Veto to potentially change those nominations, houseguests voting to evict, and a jury deciding the winner on finale night.

After two successful seasons, Shaw Media decided that the show earned its spot on Global.

A few weeks after the fifth season finished airing, during June 2017, the show was announced to be on hiatus. Then, on July 20, 2017; Global announced that (due to overwhelming support from the fans) Big Brother Canada would be returning in 2018 for a sixth season. In June 2024, soon after the conclusion of the twelfth season, the show was once again put on hiatus, before officially being cancelled in the same month.

As of Big Brother Canada 12, a total of 176 people have participated across 12 seasons. For Big Brother Canada 5, 8 players from the first four seasons returned to played the game again against 8 new players, while Big Brother Canada 12 featured two returning players against 12 new ones. Big Brother Canada 4 featured pair of brothers playing the game as one contestant, counted separately in the total, along with two contestants from Big Brother Australia and Big Brother UK respectively.

In some seasons, players would join the game one week late after being subjected to a fan vote against other potential players. The seasons that include this twist are: Big Brother Canada 2, Big Brother Canada 4, Big Brother Canada 6 and Big Brother Canada 7, with seven potential houseguests ultimately not getting voted in, thus being excluded from the total. Of those seven, two of them hailed from Big Brother US and Big Brother Italy.

^1 Fourteen houseguests entered the house on Day 1, while three additional contestants faced Canada's vote to decide who would be the final houseguest. This houseguest entered the house on Day 15.

• Big Brother Canada is the first international version of Big Brother directly adapted from the American version rather than the global version.
• Mark Chrysler was the first male to be the first person evicted as he was evicted first in Big Brother Canada 5.
  • He would later be followed by Micheal Stubley and John Michael Sosa.
• Big Brother Canada 6, Big Brother Canada 7, Big Brother Canada 9, and Big Brother Canada 10 were the only seasons to have a Final Two of the same gender.
  • Big Brother Canada 6 is the only season to feature an all-female Final Two.
