Big Brother 1 is the very first season of the Big Brother franchise, shot in the Netherlands. This was the only season of Big Brother to be shot in the 1990s.
Background[]
Development[]
Plans for the show started in 1997 when John de Mol, Patrick Scholtze and brothers Bart and Paul Römer were having the idea of a show with real people as protagonists. The working title was Project X and it was supposed to run for a year. The element of nominations was already part of the concept to underline the soap element of loyalty and potential betrayal.[1] On a later stage, the working title changed to De Gouden Kooi (The Golden Cage) and would eventually air from 2006 to 2008. After the original concept was not picked up by TV stations it was modeled to a 100-day-event.
Dutch writer Haye van der Heyden is credited to gave the show its name after the producers made an open call for suggestions.[2] The inspiration came from the phrase "Big Brother is watching you" in the George Orwell novel 1984.
First commercials to announce Big Brother were shown from middle of August.[3]
Hosts[]
The first season of Big Brother featured Rolf Wouters as the main host and Daphne Deckers as co-host.
Casting[]
Nearly 3.000 people applied to be on the show. Applications could be sent via internet, telephone or a voucher in the newspaper. In the end, nine people were chosen to be on the show. Three additional female contestants moved in later to replace those that where leaving the house voluntary.
Airing & Schedule[]
The first season of Big Brother premiered on September 16, 1999. In the beginning, daily recaps with events that covered the day before where shown weekdays from 7.55 to 8.30 pm. However, the show was later moved on hour ahead from 6.55 to 7.30 pm to avoid clashed with the daily soap Goede Tijden Slechte Tijden, which belonged to the same Holland Media Group.[4]
Additionally a weekend episode was aired sundays at 6.10 pm. The live show which saw nominations and evictions took place thursdays at 10.20 pm. With the ongoing success of the show, from November 6, the show also aired saturday at 8.30 pm.
Theme Song[]
The theme song was called "Leef!" (Live!) and was performed by Han van Eijk. Thanks to the success of the show, it topped the dutch single charts. It was later covered in several international adaptations of Big Brother such as in Germany , Belgium, the US, Australia or Brazil.
Twists[]
- The Bribe: In week 5, the producers decided to make an offer of 10,000 Guilder which the two houseguests that would voluntary walk on the same night would earn. Bianca and Mona took the Bribe.
House[]
The house was constructed in Almere with an estimated area of 145 m2 plus a garden of 216 m2 and a technical control center of 162 m2. 24 cameras and 59 microphones recorded the life of the houseguests. Following a Back-to-Basic-format the interior design was simple and consisted of IKEA-styled-furniture.
