John Shakespeare (c. 1531 – 7 September 1601) was the father of William Shakespeare. He was the son of Richard Shakespeare of Snitterfield, a farmer. He moved to Stratford-upon-Avon and married Mary Arden, with whom he had eight children, five of whom survived into adulthood. A well-to-do glover and whittawer (leather worker) by trade, Shakespeare was a dealer in hides and wool, and was elected to several municipal offices, serving as an alderman and culminating in a term as bailiff, the chief magistrate of the town council, before he fell on hard times for reasons unknown to historians. His fortunes later revived after the success of his son, and he was granted a coat of arms five years before his death, probably at the instigation and expense of his playwright son.
Career and municipal responsibilities
John Shakespeare moved to Stratford-upon-Avon in 1551, where he became a successful businessman involved in several related occupations. From 1556 to 1592, several official records identify him as a glovemaker, which was probably his primary trade, as tradition remembers him as following that trade even into his old age, but the records of his real estate purchases and legal expenses indicate an income much higher than that of a small-town tradesman. The administration of his father's estate in 1561 names him as a farmer. He inherited and leased agricultural lands and is on record as selling timber and barley. Court records also document him as a "brogger", an unlicensed—and therefore illegal—wool dealer. In addition, he bought and leased out houses. He was twice taken to court for violating the usury laws that prohibited charging interest higher than the legal limit of 10 percent.
World of Sport was an Australian sports program that was broadcast live by HSV 7 in Melbourne from 1959 to 1987 on Sundays between 11am and 2pm. By the end of its run, the show was claimed as the world's longest running sports program.
A unique combination of talk, banter, highly informed commentary, invented and real sports, the program held a unique place in the sports-obsessed culture of Melbourne and made stars out of a number of ex-sportsman, particularly Australian rules footballers.
The show premiered on Saturday 16 May 1959, less than three years after the debut of television in Australia.
Sponsored by Westinghouse (a white goods manufacturer) it ran for two hours and was hosted by radio commentator Ron Casey. The sponsor turned down an opportunity to renew after a thirteen-week run, but Casey saw the opportunity inherent in the concept and enlisted the help of another well known radio presenter, "Uncle Doug" Elliott.
The duo bought the concept, purchased air time on a Sunday and enlisted a new sponsor, Vealls, for 1960.

Until the end of 1964 Saturday afternoon sport on ITV comprised a series of different unlinked programmes and there was variation of coverage in different ITV regions. World of Sport was launched in January 1965 as a means to unify the afternoon's coverage as a single programme for the whole ITV network. Several of the regional franchise companies still provided segments for the new show which was initially produced by ABC Weekend Television in their Teddington Lock studios. Eamonn Andrews was the launch presenter.
In 1968 ABC lost its weekend regional franchises and a brand new ITV company London Weekend Television took over production of World of Sport under the branding of ITV Sport. At this point Dickie Davies became the new presenter/anchor man. His magnificently silver tongued delivery ensured that he fulfilled the presenter's role until the programme ended in 1985. On occasions Thames Television (a 1968 merger of ABC Television and Rediffusion) also produced the show on bank holiday Mondays and Dickie hosted these programmes too. These were broadcast from Thames' Euston Road studios.
The theme tune that ran from 1968 until 1983 was World of Sport March by Australian musician and composer Don Harper. This is the original version but an updated version replaced it around 1983 or 1984.
