John Shakespeare (c. 1531 – 7 September 1601) was the father of William Shakespeare. He was the son of Richard Shakespeare of Snitterfield, a farmer. He moved to Stratford-upon-Avon and married Mary Arden, with whom he had eight children, five of whom survived into adulthood. A well-to-do glover and whittawer (leather worker) by trade, Shakespeare was a dealer in hides and wool, and was elected to several municipal offices, serving as an alderman and culminating in a term as bailiff, the chief magistrate of the town council, before he fell on hard times for reasons unknown to historians. His fortunes later revived after the success of his son, and he was granted a coat of arms five years before his death, probably at the instigation and expense of his playwright son.
Career and municipal responsibilities
John Shakespeare moved to Stratford-upon-Avon in 1551, where he became a successful businessman involved in several related occupations. From 1556 to 1592, several official records identify him as a glovemaker, which was probably his primary trade, as tradition remembers him as following that trade even into his old age, but the records of his real estate purchases and legal expenses indicate an income much higher than that of a small-town tradesman. The administration of his father's estate in 1561 names him as a farmer. He inherited and leased agricultural lands and is on record as selling timber and barley. Court records also document him as a "brogger", an unlicensed—and therefore illegal—wool dealer. In addition, he bought and leased out houses. He was twice taken to court for violating the usury laws that prohibited charging interest higher than the legal limit of 10 percent.
Play School is a British children's television series produced by the BBC which ran from 21 April 1964 until 14 October 1988. Devised by Joy Whitby, it accidentally became the first programme to be shown on the fledgling BBC2 after a power cut halted the opening night's programming (and later it became the first children's programme to be shown in colour by that channel).Play School originally appeared on weekdays at 11am on BBC2 and later acquired a mid-afternoon BBC1 repeat. The morning showing was transferred to BBC1 in September 1983 when BBC Schools programming transferred to BBC2. It remained in that slot even after daytime television was launched in October 1986 and continued to be broadcast at that time until it was superseded in October 1988 by Playbus, which soon became Playdays.
When the BBC scrapped the afternoon edition of Play School in September 1985, to make way for a variety of children's programmes in the afternoon, a Sunday morning compilation was launched called Hello Again!.
It was first broadcast in New Zealand on Tuesday 22nd March 1972 and series one and two continued to be broadcast twice weekly, Tuesday and Thursday at approx. 4.30pm. It was originally filmed at AKTV2's Shortland Street studios in Auckland, and in later years, at what was then TVNZ's Dunedin Studio being screened twice a day at around 10am and then 2:30pm. The last series screened on television in 1990.
The show was provided by the BBC in "kitset" form. They supplied scripts and also short filmed items for showing "through the windows".
The show starred five toys, which are famously nostalgic for New Zealanders who watched the program as children. They are:

Play School '5000th Episode' (12/9/83) - FULL EPISODE
Remember that ill-conceived revamp of Play School that attracted so much criticism that they had to undo half of the changes not long after? Well, this is the episode from the beginning of the final week of the original format - the 5000th edition, we're told (although I'm not 100% convinced there isn't a certain amount of rounding-off involved there), broadcast on Monday, 12th September, 1983.
Sarah Long and Ben Thomas are the main presenters, packing things into boxes ahead of the planned move to a new set. We're treated to a song about things that fit inside other things, Humpty does a spot of fishing for objects, there's a poem about three foxes which has some funny quirky language, plus we're shown footage of a fairground in full swing. Meanwhile, Johnny Ball is on hand to tell us t...

Play School (version 2) - TV Theme (UK) - Piano Cover
Yesterday I uploaded the theme tune to Play School from the early 1970’s. This one is the second version of the same kid’s tv show. Those of you who grew up in the United Kingdom in the mid 1970’s will more than likely remember this. Play School had a number of different themes during its run on British television, and this one was the second. I’ve searched on YouTube and couldn’t find it - but I know it existed as it’s been in my head for 40+ years. I hope you like this.

It's all very gentle, wholesome, and just plain nice, and why anyone saw the need to fiddle with the formula - not to mention ditching all our cuddly friends! - is beyond me. Still, it was great while it lasted.
I've left in 30 seconds' worth of the music, schedule and continuity at the beginning to add to that classic retro flavour, and apologies for the end credits cutting out a bit sharpish.
Many thanks to Lee for providing this recording.

Meanwhile, Johnny Ball is on hand to tell us the story of the Little Red Hen, before joining in with the closing fun involving an animal race and some cake.

Don Spencer introduces another festive edition of Playschool where he clears up from the night before. Actually, you should have seen it! Humpty had a few too many babyshams, there was paper everywhere...the house was wild with excitement and everyone ended up throwing up through the round window....!
