John Shakespeare (c. 1531 – 7 September 1601) was the father of William Shakespeare. He was the son of Richard Shakespeare of Snitterfield, a farmer. He moved to Stratford-upon-Avon and married Mary Arden, with whom he had eight children, five of whom survived into adulthood. A well-to-do glover and whittawer (leather worker) by trade, Shakespeare was a dealer in hides and wool, and was elected to several municipal offices, serving as an alderman and culminating in a term as bailiff, the chief magistrate of the town council, before he fell on hard times for reasons unknown to historians. His fortunes later revived after the success of his son, and he was granted a coat of arms five years before his death, probably at the instigation and expense of his playwright son.
Career and municipal responsibilities
John Shakespeare moved to Stratford-upon-Avon in 1551, where he became a successful businessman involved in several related occupations. From 1556 to 1592, several official records identify him as a glovemaker, which was probably his primary trade, as tradition remembers him as following that trade even into his old age, but the records of his real estate purchases and legal expenses indicate an income much higher than that of a small-town tradesman. The administration of his father's estate in 1561 names him as a farmer. He inherited and leased agricultural lands and is on record as selling timber and barley. Court records also document him as a "brogger", an unlicensed—and therefore illegal—wool dealer. In addition, he bought and leased out houses. He was twice taken to court for violating the usury laws that prohibited charging interest higher than the legal limit of 10 percent.
The Edwardians (1930) is one of Vita Sackville-West's later novels and a clear critique of the Edwardian aristocratic society as well as a reflection of her own childhood experiences. It belongs to the genre of the Bildungsroman and describes the development of the main character Sebastian within his social world, in this case the aristocracy of the early 20th century.
“I ... try to remember the smell of the bus that used to meet one at the station in 1908. The rumble of its rubberless tyres. The impression of waste and extravagance which assailed one the moment one entered the doors of the house. The crowds of servants; people’s names in little slits on their bedroom doors; sleepy maids waiting about after dinner in the passages. I find that these things are a great deal more vivid to me than many things which have occurred since, but will they convey anything whatever to anyone else? Still I peg on, and hope one day to see it all under the imprint off the Hogarth Press, in stacks in the bookshops.” (Letter from West to Virginia Woolf, July 24, 1929)

Edwardian Britain In Colour | British History Documentary
This film brings black-and-white films of the Edwardian era back to vivid life. Edward VII's coronation included a fancy dress bicycle parade celebrating the new King and pride in his empire. Edwardian Britain was the richest and most powerful country in the world. But what did this mean for the men, women and children hard at work in the mills and the mines? The Edwardian era saw the creation of mass leisure, the suffrage movement, and the beginnings of world war.

MR. ROLLS AND MRS. ROYCE
In the early years of the 20th century, the motor car was not only new but was looked upon somewhat askance by almost everyone as something that was unreliable and had little future. Frederick Royce from Birmingham had a different view. His company manufactured electric dynamos but his passion became the gasoline powered motor car. Throughout most of 1903 and into the first months of 1904, he designed, built and tested his first 2-cylinder car. It's quality in terms of reliability and smooth running was unknown at the time.

BADEN-POWELL
Robert Baden-Powell spent his life in the military and rose to the rank of Lieutenant General. He was a national hero for the defense of Mafeking in the Boer War and led the inhabitants through a seven month siege, holding on until relief arrived. On his return from that campaign, he learned that his book, Aids to Scouting, had become a bestseller. After his retirement from the Army, his last position was that of Inspector General, he concentrated on the group for which he is now best remembered, the Boy Scouts.

Thanks to the success of Will's 'Big Midsummer Donkey Gag Play', John Shakespeare is finally gifted his coat of arms and becomes a gentleman...but will he act like one?

Back in the Edwardian period, thousands of tourists began coming to the Tamar Valley by paddle steamer every summer. The combination of reduced working hours and greater mobility encouraged a new form of tourism - day-tripping. Workers from towns and cities like Plymouth flocked to rural spots like Morwhellham Quay for festivities.
