Francesca Coppa is putting up five days of vids and commentary over at the Media Commons Project, and she has started the week off with the previously unpublished-on-the-web "Pressure" by California Crew.

You know how you think vidding is hard now? Well, in the old days, they had to walk uphill both ways to Hollywood themselves, film the shows in their spare time, and draw the special effects in by hand! And this vid proves it! It's a meta commentary on how things used to be done -- tape, tape, caffeine, stopwatches, gruelling handwritten notes as to the timing, because you mostly only got one shot, and if you didn't lay the section of the vid down correctly, that was it, and vcrs built by cavemen.

Seriously. The fact that there anyone stuck it out is an amazing testament to their perseverance and talent and extraordinary stubborness. And also their psychosis.

Go watch right now!

Not Youtube (I don't think...) and everyone should see this! What a fab job they did that it never ages.

(Um, ?? The vid is streaming from YouTube and embedded on the In Media Res site. You can see the YT bug in the lower right throughout.)

Oh, and you're so right! I love seeing it every time.

gosh, yeah. I remember one fan weekend (decades ago) where two of my mates (only) did the prep for a vid. I was the one reading through their pile of ST:TNG zines, watching from the comfort of the sofa. I asked mid-way through the weekend if they could make me a Riker vid to Shakespears Sisters "Stay" and was told in no uncertain terms: a) no; b) it wasn't a suitable song because it was too repetitive; c) no; d) they weren't doing three and a half minutes of trying to find scenes to go with 'stay with me' and e) NO!

To this day I have never made a vid.

Well, see, the other thing that amazes me is that they could *make a vid in a weekend*. Our timetable for vids is... uh... embarassing, actually.

Some day you will make me a vid.

noooo they (only) did the prep. Sort of watching and a lot of fastforwarding of the old VHS tapes and discussions and a few arguments.

Some day you will make me a vid.

some day. Heh

Fortunately, that's not the way most of us made VCR vids, because no way would I have ever started if I'd had to time everything with a stopwatch, and lay the audio after the video. NO WAY.

Are you kidding? Even when I showed up and people were still vidding with vcrs, I just sort of scratched my head, baffled, and pressed my buttons on my GoVideo sadly, wondering how the hell you all managed.

I may be wrong, but I didn't think GoVideo machines did video dubbing (recording only the video track, as opposed to both video and audio), so you may've just had the wrong equipment. But, yeah, seriously, at least I was always able to drop in a video edit, then hear audio and see video on playback, not like the people in that vid!

Oh, I know, I figured it out after a while, but I was so *hopeful* over the possibilities, and so mostly clueless at the time. But I still have my four pages of notes for a due South vid to Fiona Apple's Criminal that I so badly wanted to make, all the ideas, none of the necessary technical knowledge...

Also, it sorta kills me how much that GoVideo cost, in retrospect.

Well, you *could* still make the dS vid. You have the skills and the technology. *g*
