how is this week STILL going on?
Dec. 12th, 2024 07:21 am::resolves to ACTUALLY go to sleep earlier tonight::
OKAY! LET'S DO THIS!
Despite my reservations about
Ooh, and coffee! It's time for a new flavor from my coffee advent calendar -- each 'day' has actually been lasting me about four days, since I only drink one* cup a day.
(*LOL "one cup" in a 20-ounce mug, which I do realize is Not Exactly One Cup, but is sort of close enough for the purposes of this post.)
Kissapentu's Wishlist 2024
Dec. 11th, 2024 12:44 pm1. Get Well Soon cards or Holiday Cards (I celebrate Christmas). My address will be behind a cut at the bottom. Snail mail is always joyful :) And if you can't afford a card or are dealing with the Canada Post strike and would like to send a card, I've included my email, too.
2. I'd love something off my Amazon Wishlist US. It's mostly filled with dog treats and cat toys. I recently just got a new kitten, we named him Ollie, and he'd love some love this holiday season. As would my dogs. There's also a few things on there for me, but I'd rather my pets get spoiled TBH.
3. Please Be Kind To Others. A lot is going on in this world and honestly kindness should be put in place before hate.
4. Pay It Forward. If someone does something nice for you, do something nice for the next person. Doesn't hate to be big, could even just be a smile to brighten someone's day.

December Days 02024 #11: Communities: Those Who Play Video Games
Dec. 11th, 2024 11:12 pm( I have been playing video games for a while, and not everything I did in relation to games is universally positive, no. )
As with many things, if video gaming holds an appeal to you, I'd say to pick it up, if you haven't already. While we mostly have the charms of very old gaming consoles and systems in emulation now, those games are also somewhat simpler to pick up and play, with learnable loops and fewer buttons that need pushing. Many of the very old systems are more punishing and less forgiving in their simplicity, though, so there's a balance to be struck between having to keep less in your head and pay attention to less on the screen and a difficulty level in the game where you can make progress and feel like the game itself is enjoyable. And if a certain genre doesn't appeal to you, regardless of how popular it is, you don't have to keep playing it. Even if everyone around you is gushing about how they really like the newest Soulsborne-type game, if what you want is a cozy match-three experience, then find a good match-3 game and play that instead.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew eps 1-3
Dec. 11th, 2024 09:30 pm( Spoilers for eps 1-3 )
I guess I'll go ahead and use my movies tag for it even though it's TV; I think I did that with Mandalorian as well.
Daily Happiness
Dec. 11th, 2024 10:40 pm2. Today was the first day of our new store's soft open. They were only open 10-4, not a full day (and will do the same schedule tomorrow and Friday and then the grand opening this weekend), but it went pretty well. Still some kinks to work out, one of which being that the software to check sales during the day was still not working, so I can't see what our numbers were until the reports are generated tomorrow morning, but it seemed busy considering we had not announced that we would be open today.

Dec. 11th, 2024 09:37 pmComment from hildi at Ask A Manager (2013)
I think this just speaks to the point about how there are relationship-focused people and task-focused people. In my classes I give everyone the following passionate speech: “The relationship focused folks need to work on being less sensitive. If you know you’re dealing with a task focused individual and they say something that feels kind of rude, let it go. They are probably not focused on the relationship right now. They are focused on what’s important to them and that’s the task. They can work with you regardless of whether they like you or not.
“On the other hand, you task-focused folks: you need to understand that when you’re dealing with relationship focused people that it is critical for them that they don’t feel the relationship is in jeopardy when dealing with you. They mistake your “get to the point” with a blow to the relationship, you need to be aware of that and find a softer way to say the same thing. ”
Interview with an incredibly diplomatic person … or how to agreeably disagree at Ask a Manager. An interview with hildi, containing more great advice.
Clear is Kind, Unclear is Unkind by Brene Brown.
Feeding people half-truths or bullshit to make them feel better (which is almost always about making ourselves feel more comfortable) is unkind.
Not getting clear with a colleague about your expectations because it feels too hard, yet holding them accountable or blaming them for not delivering is unkind.
Talking about people rather than to them is unkind.

Dec. 11th, 2024 11:41 pmAlas! his new job, which seems initially like a pathway out of the financial downward spiral that's been drowning him in slow motion, turns out to be bad for both him and everyone he knows. This is very clear from the beginning and is repeatedly foreshadowed -- there are several wistful sequences of 'alas! had Jonathan done x at y time, and had a genuine conversation with z, perhaps things would have gone this, better way. however --' in ways that didn't quite work for me; I think I would have enjoyed this book completely wholeheartedly as a novella, but as a full novel I sort of felt like it perhaps ran out of things to tell me sooner than it ran out of pages.
But I also, frankly, have been really spoiled for good surrealist workplace horror-satire by friends who are absurdly talented at evoking it (sometimes just by telling me about something that happened in their day-to-day life! at their startup!) and it is not really Jonathan Abernathy's fault that the tone of this book tilted more dreamy and wistful, and less bitingly detailed and sharp in the way that I personally prefer it. So if you, too, love surrealist workplace horror-satire, it may well be worth giving this book a go, and I think it's even odds that it will scratch the itch!
19.49: Getting to Know You
Dec. 9th, 2024 06:59 pmAs we wrap up our Close Reading Series, we’re shifting our focus towards helping you integrate what you’ve learned. For December, we’ll be releasing episodes designed to help you make measurable progress on a writing project. So dust off your current work-in-progress, or pull out your brainstorming documents—we’re here to help you finish the year strong.
What can we learn from romances? Today we’re talking about using elements of romance in your story (even if you have no romance in your current WIP!) Character relationships and dynamics are often at the heart of our stories, so what can we learn from the romance genre?
We’re thinking about the power of one character putting another one at ease, a character dismissing another (“I’ll never be interested in you!”), or two characters finding a commonality between themselves. Mary Robinette also introduces us to her family’s theory of compatibility, which measures these M-words: mind, money, morals, manners, monogamy, and mirth.
Thing of the Week: Ancient History Fangirl (podcast)
Homework: In the scene you’re working on, what is one thing your character finds attractive about the other character in the scene? Also, what does your own character think is their own least attractive trait, and how can you make them more anxious about that right now?
Credits: Your hosts for this episode were Mary Robinette Kowal, Dan Wells, DongWon Song, Erin Roberts, and Howard Tayler. It was produced by Emma Reynolds, recorded by Marshall Carr, Jr., and mastered by Alex Jackson.

Well now I know
Dec. 11th, 2024 10:32 pmIt snowed today. Not much, just enough to be pretty.
I stayed here and cleaned and tried to write. Is anyone else struggling to write fandomtrees stories? I have ones I can easily do but it's like where is my motivation? Sigh.
Advent Joy
Day 11 - have a virtual coffee date with friends/family. Done. I talk to my parents every night over tea, close enough
OMFG another tisane for the tea of the day. Winter Wonderland Rooibos: green rooibos, cacao nibs, cinnamon and 'winter wonderland' flavoring. It was...odd. I didn't like it at first but it got better but I wouldn't buy this one for myself.
And for the Fannish 50 let me queue up my favorite Galaxycon photos
( pictures under here! )
What I Just Finished Reading:
Wormwood - Susan Albert Witting not the best in the series but not bad (I'm not a fan of dual timeline stuff)
Blue Baby - FBI procedural (this was so misogynistic I was shocked a woman wrote it)
The Devil's Food Cake Murders - Joanne Fluke, ridiculous. I knew the entire mystery before the guy was even killed (I was right) and food everywhere, including talking about it in terms of the autopsy (did he get to eat Hannah's yummy cake.)
What I am Currently Reading:
Minstrels in the Galaxy (the SF anthology I'm in)
The Vanishing at Smokestack Hollow - true crime
The Lost House - icelandic noir arc
What I Plan to Read Next: working thru a bunch of mystery paperbacks to get them out of here.

Dec. 11th, 2024 10:13 pmFrom trickortreatex:
Jeeves and Wooster:
Jeeves Coshes Death on the Noggin - 1.2K, T, Bertie and Jeeves
Bertie appears to be dead, despite his protests to the contrary. A wonderfully written fic, excellent voice, good laughs all the way through.
From seasonsofdrabbles:
Original Work:
clandestine coffee - 200, G, gen
Sweet double drabble of an angel enjoying an autumn day.
Asante's Vigil - 100, G, gen
Protective gorilla bonding with her child.
From ficinabox:
Original Work:
Art:
better kept in secret - G, pirate captain/navy captain nemesis
Lovely colors and movement in this piece. Reminds me of 18th century illustrations, which is very fitting for the characters.
Tiny Witch With a Tiny Familiar - G, fairy witch
An autumn witch in mixed media, pressed leaves for the most part. Very nicely done and well shaped.
Fic:
Elder - 1K, NR, superheroes and villains
Good worldbuilding in a small space, interesting characters, some nice humor.
Palaces out of Paragraphs - 1K, NR, Crown Princess Who Was a Writer/ Faraway King Who Loves Her Books
A very lovely epistolary exchange of two people hiding their identities but making a connection over a shared love for books.
per my last email - 2.4K, G, IT Guy & Sentient Printers He Cares For
There were several works made with this premise but this was my favorite of the lot. The printers were such adorable characters in themselves (be sure to use a converter for their binary email subjects), and the people around them cared so much! Delightful.
PATAGONIA, 202X - 18K, M Angel Carcass Fallen From the Sky & Scientists Studying It
Wonderfully creepy and explorative. I love all the questions this brought not only for the readers but for the characters.
All The Old Paintings On The Tomb - 6K, T, Disposable Supervillain Grunt Squad & Squad Leader Trying To Keep Them Alive
This was fantastic! My favorite episode of any long-running TV show is always the lab rat/squintern episode, where we see the daily life of the secondary characters, and this had so much of that feel to it. Absolutely enjoyed this.
Star Trek:
IDIC - 65, G, poetry
Several haiku on the destruction of Vulcan. Beautifully crafted.
Denorios Belt Briefs - 1K, NR, Deep Space Nine crew, Jake Sisko
News briefs and bits of interest as written by Jake Sisko. Fun and amusing!
Bones:
Adoption Day - 1.4K, G, Jack Hodgins/Angela Montenegro
Jack and Angela adopt rats, and it is adorable how they prepare for them. Plus the names are spot on.
Downton Abbey:
Trading Favours - 2.1K, G, Thomas and Anna
Pre-canon, Anna catches Thomas at something he's not supposed to be doing (what else is new XD ) and they come to an arrangement. Keeps Thomas' bite without making him horrible, displays Anna's cleverness well.
