The Telephone Game「伝言ゲーム, Dengon Gēmu?」 is the thirteenth episode of Oshi no Ko anime adaptation.
Synopsis[]
Abiko, the original author of Tokyo Blade, is not very good at socializing. A senior manga artist, Yoriko, was worried about whether she would be able to handle the situation well when her work was adapted into a media piece, but when she visited the rehearsal room, her fears were confirmed.[1]
Summary[]
A flashback occurs on the first day of rehearsal, where Aqua Hoshino and Kana Arima reunite with Melt Narushima after months since the production of I'll Go With Sweet Today. Melt admits to Kana that his performance brought that production down and promises that he has learned his lesson in acting since then. As the cast of Tokyo Blade introduces themselves to each other, Aqua meets up with Akane Kurokawa. Akane offers to guide him, as theater is her area of expertise, while Kana and Melt watch on. Kana then unleashes a rant about them, which surprises Melt since her behavior is totally differently in comparison to the time they were working together during Sweet Today.
Elsewhere, Yoriko meets up with Abiko for drinks. Abiko has asked Yoriko to meet her to discuss the upcoming stage play adaptation of Tokyo Blade and asks Yoriko to join her to watch a rehearsal, which she accepts. Yoriko knows very well about the challenges of adaptations, it requires working with various different people and there have been many cases where production was thrown into chaos due to the original author's dissatisfaction. Knowing Abiko's oddities might lead to problems, she hopes everything will be smooth sailing.
In the present, everyone is astonished by Abiko's request for the entire script to be rewritten from scratch, especially since she already gave her approval for the script. However, Abiko points out she requested rewrites numerous times, but she was persuaded that she would find it to be a good script upon seeing the rehearsals. However, having now seen them, she is dissatisfied and therefore demands a rewrite. Goa immediately apologizes that he has not delivered a script to her satisfaction but it only draws more of her ire as she questions him if he has even read the source material. Before she can go further, she is interrupted by Yoriko. Given the situation, some of the cast, such as Taiki decide to leave.
As Abiko argues with her editor and producer Raida in the adjacent room, Yoriko reflects on the process of getting a piece of media adapted. Disputes are common between the original author and the scriptwriter as is the case here. Yoriko deduces that Abiko was probably furious upon receiving the script but due to the number of intermediaries involved, it becomes a game of telephones. From the editor, the rights manager, and the producer, everyone has their own considerations, so by the time the comment reaches the scriptwriter, Abiko's original instructions would have lost all of their original meaning. Abiko was probably annoyed, feeling that she had been completely ignored, therefore her outburst just now was not completely unexpected. As Abiko continues to vent her frustration, she insists on writing the script herself or she will rescind the approval for the adaptation. On top of that, she wants Goa to stop working on the project.
Goa, who has been overhearing the conversation alongside Yoriko and Aqua, admits there is nothing he can do but accept the way things are going. After the mangakas leave, Raida approaches Goa to apologize. While Goa does not mind being taken off the project, he requests his credits be removed. However, since it has already been announced and the promotional material has been printed, it would be an expensive endeavor, so Goa accepts the situation with great reluctance. Back at home, Goa reflects on the effort he put in writing the script, but cannot help but feel frustrated with himself after hearing Abiko's criticisms.
As the cast gathers the following day, director Kindaichi announces that rehearsals are on hold while they wait for a new script. Akane was hoping to get all the time she could to rehearse since this is a Stage Around production. This prompts Aqua to ask what Stage Around is referring to, much to his co-stars' annoyance. When Akane points out that he does not like stage plays, Aqua explains that he simply finds theater cheap with poor pacing in comparison to videos. Since they now have free time, Akane takes Aqua out on a date to the theater to show him what it really is.
