The Curtain Rises「開幕, Kaimaku?」 is the sixteenth episode of Oshi no Ko anime adaptation.
Synopsis[]
Why does Aqua continue acting even though he says he has no talent? What does Akane say in response to Aqua finally revealing his true feelings? And what is the "responsibility of a boyfriend" that Akane seeks?[1]
Summary[]
At the Gotanda's household, Akane has prepared dinner for everyone and Gotanda's mom tells Aqua to hang on to her. Aqua is reluctant to eat and Akane tries to feed him but he rebuffs her, claiming that he is not a kid and her attempts have gotten him to eat. After dinner, Akane asks Gotanda to show her recordings of Aqua's past performance. Gotanda tells her to seek Aqua's permission, which he grants as long as she watches them without his presence. As Akane watches Aqua's old performance, she finds him adorable before noticing how prepared Aqua's acting is. Gotanda notes that Aqua also had a panic attack during the filming of this movie and he has problems whenever he tries emotional acting.

"I'd help you kill them."
Akane then comes to talk to Aqua about their goals and futures; they then agree to help each other, with Aqua wanting to finally get close to the person responsible for Ai's demise, while Akane wants his help in beating Kana and Taiki. After their conversation, Aqua shows Gotanda the script of Tokyo Blade and together they conclude that the script demands "intense emotional acting". Therefore, Gotanda instructs Aqua to start coming over and he will prepare him for the play.
At the end of another day's rehearsal, Melt laments over his poor performance during Sweet Today and takes a walk to clear his mind. He comes across Ruby, who has come to check on Aqua along with Minami. Ruby instantly recognizes Melt and introduces herself, but Aqua has already left with Akane, which puzzles Ruby since Aqua has been returning home at midnight recently. Minami shyly tells Ruby he might be coming home late due to doing lewd things with Akane, an assumption that perturbs her.

Melt struggles with his inadequate acting.
While Ruby heads to the restroom, Minami is approached by Sakuya, who tries to get her contact information but is interrupted by Melt. Later on, Melt tells Sakuya that he felt conflicted seeing him picking up a friend of Aqua's sister. This annoys Sakuya, who then admonishes Melt for his lacking performance, saying it is dragging the whole play down. Melt cannot help but agree, as he has realized this since acting with Aqua. Later, at the Ichigo-Pro office, Ruby proudly shows off the contact of Sakuya, but her teammate warns her about how 2.5D Stage Actors usually play around, before blocking him on her behalf.

Kana squares off Akane on set.
On another day of rehearsal, Kana and Akane argue with each other, until Kana pulls out an old magazine containing an interview where Akane mentions Kana as the reason she started acting. Kana smugly parades around the set, which infuriates Akane, until Akane points out she is only known for her Bell Pepper Exercise. Kana fires back by saying Akane is only known because of a reality dating show, and before a fight breaks out, both of them are pulled away by Aqua and Melt. Separated, Akane vents her frustration with Kana to Aqua, who sympathizes since he contemplated killing Kana himself during their first meeting.

"I refuse to lose."
Meanwhile, Kana cannot help but gloat in front of Melt and Taiki. Melt tries to get her to get along but she gives him a cold stare, before explaining her reasons for goading Akane due to her pride and their different mindset regarding acting itself. Melt asks Taiki about Akane and Kana, and Taiki states that they're evenly matched on their own, but Kana will win this time because she is acting with him. As the main cast rehearses together, Sakuya points out once again that Melt is out of his depth, and it will be even more obvious by acting next to Taiki. Spurred by this, Melt requests Kana to practice with him while Akane hurries Aqua to practice at Gotanda's place. The cast slowly melds into their roles as Akane and Kana proclaim that they refuse to lose.

Mem-Cho reunites with her friends from LoveforReal at the Stage Around venue.
As crowds gather for the opening day of the play, Abiko has come to the theater alongside Yoriko and is feeling nervous. Goa approaches them and appeases her worry, stating that he is pleased with the script. He goes on to say that the actors will also determine the quality of the play but he has faith since they are all talented, but Yoriko has doubts upon seeing a poster featuring Melt. Inside the theater, Mem-Cho meets up with the cast of LoveForReal and teases Yuki regarding her relationship with Nobuyuki. Kengo spots a beauty in the crowd, and Mem-Cho explains that she is Aqua's sister, to everyone's astonishment. Ruby is feeling like a big shot after Miyako explains their seats are reserved for people involved with the play. They then notice Gotanda nearby and Miyako wonders if Aqua invited him. Gotanda meanwhile is concerned whether Aqua can pull off the emotional acting but smiles to himself remembering how Aqua was being serious about his acting.

The Tokyo Blade cast prepare for the stage play.
Backstage Kana and Akane meet in their costumes. Kana admits that it pains her to say that she is glad to be acting together again, and declares that she will outperform Akane, who is currently called the genius actress so that nobody can call her a 'former' genius child actor again. As Kana walks away, Akane privately admits that she has been waiting for this for a long time. In the meantime, Aqua is preparing himself in the dressing room. Starring at a picture of Ai, he fails to contain his past self's violent emotions and falls to the floor. However, he resolutely looks at the mirror, ready to throw everything to make up for his lack of talent in this direction, as that is his method of acting. Soon all of the audience are seated and the curtains rise.

- There are some minor additions during the scene where Kana parades the magazine:
- Kana speaks to Koyuki and Mei before engaging with Akane.
- The rest of the cast are also present in the anime but only Aqua, Melt and Taiki are present in the manga.
- The scene where Kana and Akane vowing not to lose is in the manga but their character transforming into the role is anime-original.
