- "After we are finished there will be no more wars, no more pain, especially now that we're together. It's time we took back this planet, make it the home Inhumans have always deserved."
- ―Hive to Daisy Johnson[src]
Hive's Ascension was the attempt of Hive to take control of the entire Earth and rule the Inhumans.
Background[]
Banished from Earth[]
- "Thousands of years ago, an Inhuman was born on this planet that was destined to rule it, so powerful, so fearsome that others were consumed with dread, and so they banished it from the Earth, sent it through the portal to a distant planet. HYDRA was founded with the sole purpose of engineering its return."
- ―Gideon Malick[src]
Thousands of years ago, Kree Reapers were on Earth and found a Mayan hunter who they subjected to an experimental process called Terrigenesis. This experiment caused the hunter to evolve into a parasitical entity capable of feasting off living cells, control other Inhumans' minds, and reanimate dead bodies into host bodies.[3] After assuming the identity of "Alveus" or Latin for "Hive", the Kree wanted to use this Inhuman's ability for their own uses. However, the Inhuman betrayed his creators and raised an army of other Inhumans against the Kree and flushed them from the Earth.
Because of these great abilities, Alveus' Inhuman followers grew afraid of his power. Several of his Inhuman and Human followers banished the Inhuman God by sending him through a Kree portal to a distant, barren planet. Alveus' other followers, who still had faith in their leader, founded a secret society with the sole purpose of bringing their leader back so he would conquer the Earth. That secret society would become HYDRA in later years.[4]
Surviving on Maveth[]
- "That THING has been killing everyone that's come through here for centuries."
- ―Will Daniels to Jemma Simmons[src]
On the desolate planet of Maveth, Hive had been feasting on the people who were sent through the Monolith to Maveth as sacrifices for Hive to control and preserve himself into. This allowed Hive to survive many lifespans. His many victims consisted of Lord Manzini, who was a worshipper of Hive who was sent when he grabbed the white stone in a lottery held by English lords and nobles in a castle in Gloucestershire, England in 1839.[5] In 1970, Nathaniel Malick was sent after being tricked and betrayed by his brother, Gideon Malick into being selected to being sacrificed to Hive.[6]
In 2001, NASA sent astronauts Will Daniels, S. Austin, Brubaker and G. Taylor to Maveth. Hive killed off the astronauts one by one, causing Daniels to survive and fend for himself, and for the next 14 years, Daniels would indeed survive by occasionally outsmarting Hive.[7]
Rescue of Jemma Simmons[]
- "You'll help me learn how S.H.I.E.L.D. was able to achieve something with the portal that HYDRA, in thousands of years, has never been able to accomplish."
"And what is that?"
"They brought someone back." - ―Gideon Malick and Grant Ward[src]
In 2015, S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Jemma Simmons was accidentally transported to Maveth when she tried to seal the Monolith up. She took shelter with Will Daniels for several months, surviving and avoiding Hive & the "No-Fly Zone".[7] When Simmons had just about given up all hopes about ever returning home, she and Daniels spotted the flare Leo Fitz shot through the portal and ran for the exit. Although Simmons escaped and reunited with her friends, Daniels did not survive his encounter with Hive. The Inhuman took possession of Daniels' corpse and used his memories to return to his hideout.[1]
Campaign[]
Battle of Maveth[]
With news of Jemma Simmons' return reaching the powerful Gideon Malick, HYDRA spent all its efforts to try to figure a way to return Hive to Earth as they intended for a thousand years.[4] Malick sent a team lead by Grant Ward to Maveth, with Leo Fitz as a forced participant in the journey.[8]
After the team arrived, they surveyed the land for Hive's whereabouts before Fitz found the entrance of Will Daniels' hideout where he found Hive inside Daniels' body. Ward soon discovered Hive as well and held him at gunpoint, but is convinced by Fitz that they need "Daniels" to find Hive and the portal. Ward and Fitz question "Daniels", with "Daniels" lying to them, being vague and carefully selective of his choice of words to avoid suspicion. Ward and Fitz then took the injured "Daniels" with them to find Hive and escape Maveth.
On the journey, Fitz told "Daniels" that they were not planning on letting any of them leave in Daniels' body, causing Hive to kill some operatives as Fitz distracted them and ran with Fitz. On the run, Hive explained the origins of Maveth's civilization before revealing himself to Fitz that he was not "Daniels", and used his body and memories to gain his trust. Although Fitz was easily overpowered by Hive, Phil Coulson―hunting Ward down to seek revenge for Rosalind Price―shot Hive to save Fitz. Although Hive made a few attempts to rush towards the portal, Fitz still managed to shoot a flare gun at Daniels' body, burning Hive and the host corpse.
Luckily for Hive, Coulson succeeded in killing Ward with his prosthetic hand, giving Hive another dead body to enter and control after Coulson and Fitz left. Despite S.H.I.E.L.D. causing the destruction of the HYDRA Castle with the Monolith shards inside, Hive survived both the journey back to Earth from Maveth and the castle's destruction. Following his escape route to the airport, Malick found Hive, who was following Malick in Ward's deceased body, carrying Coulson's prosthetic hand with him.[1]

Following the sacrifice of Lincoln Campbell in the Battle of the Playground, Daisy Johnson left S.H.I.E.L.D., deciding it would be better to not have anymore of her friends suffer around her, and began operating as a vigilante. Her activities gave her the superhero alter-ego known as Quake and sparked a manhunt led by S.H.I.E.L.D. to apprehend Johnson.[2]
