How could a man, who saw so much, be so blind?
Oppenheimer isn’t a story of redemption nor a glorification of a physicist’s genius thinking but rather a tale of the human need to be someone, to be remembered. It’s in this search that lies the true horror of this story. Our suffering ends by creating someone else’s, our demise is manufactured while trying to prevent it. It’s a vicious cycle of how mankind hurts itself every time it tries to play God, every time it tries to be grander than it ever had the capacity to be. More than a history lesson or a documentary on such a horrific event in History, Nolan assembles a haunting and visually astounding vehicle for a lesson that stood the test of time, and that always will, for we will never learn. Power is blinding, and only when we witness the consequences of it do we get a sense of the responsibility we once had in our hands, but by then it will always be too late. I’m glad we didn’t get to see Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as the film itself is already heartbreaking enough for what it represents within politics, science and society.
Oppenheimer is a film that jumps out of the screen through its story, the outstanding visuals and an original score that crawls under your skin and induces you into thinking you’re about to explode as well. The technical excellence and the way Nolan molds the narrative through non-linear storytelling and striking messages, make this not only the best film of the year so far but a career best from Nolan himself. His grand piece, truly.
