Review:
Don’t expect fun. Don’t expect popcorn cinema.
Christopher Nolan is here to change your perception of what happened and what is true.
First things first. Inside of you there are two wolves. The fun one should watch Barbie and will have his time of his life. The other one more darker will choose wisely and watch this movie of the Barbenheimer double bill.
Oppenheimer is a behemoth of a film. It’s not a short one and also not told in a linear construct. Also you’ll have to deal with two story lines. One bright and in vivid colours and the other one in sharp and cold black and white. And therefore you’ll have a typical Christopher Nolan movie.
The first timeline is Fission and follows the story from Oppenheimer‘s pov. The second is called Fusion and shows the retelling of the events of Fission that takes place at Lewis Strauss‘s confirmation hearing for a cabinet post. With those two strains your expected biopic of Oppenheimer had to go out of the window.
It is an inescapable character study that shines its light on a man and his invention that people think they know but don’t. Cillian Murphy plays a broken man from the beginning, someone who isn’t understood, not trusted and in the end blamed and martyred. The rest of the stellar cast try to reach the heights of Murphy. Mentionable performances are definitely by Florence Pugh (of course, queen) and Robert Downey Jr. (out of character, still love you 3000).
Also the production design, impeccable, and the music, wonderful. Especially ladder will be added to my rotation. Göransson is not crawling up the hill anymore. Make room Hans Zimmer, Ludwig is competition.
This movie sits deep with me and I’m interested in repeating the experience again, like a good scientist. Because this film is a physical reaction that isn’t for everyone and moves again Nolan forward as a director that I wouldn’t want to miss.
