A staggering achievement of filmmaking, even for somebody at the level of Nolan
It feels familiar, but at the same time, like a magnificent new avenue has been opened up to him
The magnitude of what Oppenheimer is building to over 180 minutes just roots you in such a visceral fear and locks you in from the very first frame
Obviously a major reason for this is the wonderful Ludwig score and Nolan/Hoyte’s stunning methods of capturing a deeply haunted individual and those surrounding him, but the entire cast of this is where it all shines
Cillian Murphy is absolutely riveting, RDJ brings it home so strong, but I was most taken by Emily Blunt. One sequence in the third act has her acting circles around everybody in the film. Every scene feels like a set piece by the gravitas brought by every cast member. I adored it
This movie is just jam-packed with complexities, both aesthetically and thematically, yet Nolan is still able to root the film in the evils of the American government and bureaucracy
The final hour of this essentially acts as a full blown legal thriller looking to indict the very foundation of those in power, and god I ate it up
The sequence following the Trinity test is one of the best things Nolan has ever done, and is a mastercraft in conveying tone and genuine dread. Absolute nightmare stuff. I’ll have many more thoughts on this film, and would like to see it again, but I want to do a lot of supplementary research prior to it
The final line of this also belongs in the pantheon of final lines, alongside the likes of Eyes Wide Shut, There Will Be Blood, Goodfellas, and so many more classics
