Batman: The Long Halloween, Part Two

    ½

It's one thing to want to put your own spin on a classic story. It's another thing entirely to not understand what made the story great in the first place.

My last direct-to-video DC movie. They're bad!

  • Fail Safe

    Fail Safe

    ★★★★★

One of the many dumb rules I give myself when it comes to my Letterboxd is that I have to watch a film twice before giving it all five stars.

Today I am breaking that rule, because Fail Safe is flat out one of the greatest pieces of storytelling I have ever beared witness to. Holy fucking shit.

  • Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One

Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One

    ★½

The animation is balls compared to what it could/should be, the dialogue is incredibly lame, the changes they made are either flat-out weird or cynically done to add more action and the amount of puns/illusions to Harvey becoming Two Face made me want to kill myself. Oh you’re of two minds on something Harvey?? Such clever writing!!

After Hush, I have no faith they’re actually going to keep it to the original killer, which is exactly what you want from…

  • Ten Little Indians

    Ten Little Indians

    ★★★★

    Never trust a woman.

The 60s were quite a time!

  • MacGruber

    MacGruber

    ★★★★★

Almost nothing more fun movie-wise than showing this to people who haven’t seen it.

  • 42

    ★★★

    Rock solid sports movie.

  • Manhunter

    Manhunter

    ★★★★

"You want the scent? Smell yourself."

Cool as hell, and explains some of the references in Cartman’s Incredible Gift, one of my favorite South Park episodes.

The needle drops have me on the fence between cool and dumb, but I’m sure I’ll fall on the cool side whenever I rewatch this.

It amazes me how we’ve been re-living the 80’s for the last five years or so, and the writers/directors of the day are picking some of the lamest stuff about 80s films to pay tribute to. More Thief and Manhunter, less Goonies and Karate Kid.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Spent the week watching this in pieces and boy did it impress.

A movie and a show are very different things, so there’s no real reason to compare them. I love them both for different reasons.

Given the gift of time, the TV show is the truer adaptation of the book (which is my favorite book of all time, as if it needed to be said) but not the better one in my opinion.

The film tweaks some things, combines…

  • Jackie

    Jackie

    ★★★★½

An endlessly moving portrait of grief. It’s ridiculous that Portman lost the Oscar to Emma Stone, as great as she is.

Probably the biggest snub or whatever of the last decade.

  • The Phenomenon

    The Phenomenon

    ★★★½

It’s funny to me how UFOs were front page, international news at the same time WWII was ending, and now the conversations about the 99.99% likelihood of extraterrestrial life is relegated to subreddits and a kitschy CNN headline every now and again.

Aliens are out there, they must be social distancing, right????

    @JoeBiden, @KamalaHarris pls tell us.
