"The Discovery Expedition" is the first segment of the twenty-ninth episode of Miles from Tomorrowland. It premiered on December 4, 2015 alongside "Snow Globe".

Plot[]

Miles and M.E.R.C. visit Loretta in her room and ask her if she would like to join them in a game of quantum kick. Loretta turns down their offer because she is busy finishing off a new computer program she has designed. Giving Miles and M.E.R.C. a demonstration, Loretta's program can search for intelligent life in outer space by detecting anyone who is computer coding. If she uses it to check Earth, for example, it will immediately light up because there are lots of people using computers. But if she uses it to check another part of space where nobody lives there is no life. But as she spoke, Loretta's program suddenly detects tons of code being sent out in an empty region of space. Since there are so many different codes coming from that one spot, Loretta deduces that it must be a planet that is uncharted. Loretta has discovered a new planet.

Loretta shares her findings with her parents, who are both impressed. They decide to report this to the TTA and contact Admirals Watson and Crick. The Admirals are delighted to hear about Loretta's discovery and she sends them the coordinates for them to scan. But to her surprise, the Admiral's scanners show no sign of a planet in the area where Loretta's computer code pinpointed. The Admirals believe she might have made a mistake, but Loretta is positively sure there is a planet out there. Miles believes her and so do Phoebe and Leo. So, Callistos decide to take the Star Jetter to Loretta's coordinates and check it out for themselves. Since this is Loretta's discovery this makes it her mission to lead.

They soon arrive at the coordinates and already they see no sign of a planet. While Loretta remains certain that she is right about a planet in the area, her dad is doubtful since it is clear there is nothing in the area. But then suddenly without warning, the Star Jetter passed through some kind of energy field and the Callistos instantly found themselves in the atmosphere of a planet. Heading straight down through an intense snowstorm out of control, Leo safely lands the Star Jetter into a snowdrift. The Callistos are alright and find themselves on the surface of a new planet. As Miles wonders how they were unable to see it before, Leo suspects that this planet is hidden by some kind of cloaking device that makes it invisible to scanners, but not to Loretta's computer program. Loretta is super excited and immediately wants to begin studying the planet. She asks her dad to do a flyover, but it turns out the Star Jetter's boosters were damaged when they crashed landed. While Leo makes repairs, Miles has suspicions that whoever cloaked this planet wanted to live in secrecy from the rest of the universe. Little do the Callistos know that they are being watched from afar and someone has ordered an attack on their ship. Then out of nowhere, the Callistos spot a huge snowball coming right for them. Since the Star Jetter's boosters have not yet been repaired, Leo activates the ship's skis to ski them down the mountain as more snowballs roll down after them. They lose all the incoming snowballs but one remains on their tail as near a dead end. Leo uses the Star Jetter's flash beam to melt a hole in the ground. The Star Jetter skis down into the hole and the huge snowball rolls over them, before crashing into a wall of ice. The Callistos are safe once again. Miles and Loretta are ready to go out and explore, but their parents tell them no because once the Star Jetter is repaired they are leaving. But after a little gentle persuasion from Miles, Phoebe allows the kids to venture out as long as they stay close to the Star Jetter.

Miles, Loretta, and M.E.R.C. walk a kilometre away from the Star Jetter. They are just about to take some holopics when Miles spots a alien girl buried in the snow. Miles takes her hand and pulls her out of the snow. The girl calls herself Mirandos who is an Ariellian, an advanced humanoid race who love computers and inhabits the planet known as Tempestoro. Miles and Loretta learn from Mirandos that it was her father who tried to run them over with the snowballs because he has a long distrust for outsiders. A long time ago, Mirandos' people welcomed their first visitors who attacked them for unknown reasons. They got rid of them and to make sure it would never happen again, Mirandos' people wrote code that would keep their world hidden from view. That was until Loretta figured it out. While her father believes that other creatures are mean and out to get them, Mirandos has now seen that he is wrong because Miles and Loretta saved her. So she tries to make contact with him and reveals that he is planning another attack on the Callistos by setting off a huge avalanche. Unfortunately, she is unable to make contact with her father and his attack will occur very soon. With only a little time, Miles quickly comes up with an idea. Since both Loretta and Mirandos are computer geniuses, he believes they could design a code that could help them. Both Loretta and Mirandos agree that is a good idea. Mirandos reveals that there are walls underground that pop up when they need protection. The girls believe if they can override the security system they can run some code to activate those walls and block the avalanche. Combining their systems, Loretta and Mirandos begin coding at rapid speed just as the avalanche erupts. The girls finish the computer program they have designed and quickly send it through to activate the walls, protecting them from the incoming avalanche. The Callistos are safe for the third time once again.

Loretta introduces her parents to Mirandos just as her father, Prosperos, shows up. Before getting offensive, Mirandos tells him about how they saved her when she got stuck in the snow and how Loretta found their planet when she cracked their code. Prosperos is surprised to hear this and impressed. Loretta asks Prosperos if it's okay for her and her family to explore Tempestoro. Though reluctant and with some persuasion from his daughter, Prosperos grants her permission and will willingly let down their cloaking shield. After repairing the Star Jetter, with some help from Prosperos, the Callistos return to the Stellosphere to report their findings back to Admirals Watson and Crick. The Admirals apologize for doubting Loretta, and Loretta thanks her family for believing in her.

Trivia[]

  • The line Loretta quotes "We go where no humans have gone before" is a parody to the popular Star Trek phrase, "Where no man/one has gone before".
  • Mirandos and Prosperos are modelled and named after Miranda and Prospero from Shakespeare's The Tempest.
    • Mirandos and Prosperos' species is also named after the character Ariel from Shakespeare's play.
    • The planet Tempestoro is named after Shakespeare's play.
  • Although Mirandos made her debut appearance in "The Quantum Cup", this episode is technically where she meets the Callistos for the first time.
  • This is the fourth time the Star Jetter crash lands, following "Unplugged", "Eye to Eye", and "The Pluto Rescue".
