"Lunar New Year" is the first segment of the seventeenth episode of Miles from Tomorrowland. It premiered on July 17, 2015, alongside "The Hoverbike Diaries".
Plot[]
Today is the last day of Lunar New Year. Miles wakes up M.E.R.C., reminding him of the special occasion. The Callistos have been celebrating the holiday for two weeks, and the end of it features the Lantern festival. Miles shows M.E.R.C. how great the festival is when Leo calls them for breakfast. M.E.R.C. quickly heads to the kitchen, and Miles follows.
The Callistos are eating soup and rice balls. Phoebe finds out that Gong Gong used to make this food back on Earth. Miles wishes that he and Po Po would be here to celebrate with them. Loretta wishes the same thing, as the Callistos would see them more frequently if they lived in space instead of Earth. Leo says that it is polite to slurp tan yueng, and M.E.R.C. slurps all of it. Stella informs the Callistos that they are entering Earth's atmosphere. This is to pick up a Lantern festival surprise which will be in the hangar when the Callistos finish breakfast.
The surprise arrives at the hangar, and it is revealed to be Gong Gong and Po Po, much to the delight of the Callistos. Loretta shares lots of facts she learned to Po Po, like Ceres being the biggest asteroid in the solar system. Po Po tries to learn something new every day, but it is better when it comes from her granddaughter. Gong Gong finds a lucky red envelope behind Miles, who thanks him for that. Gong Gong also feeds M.E.R.C. bits of Booster Bites. The Callistos are glad Gong Gong and Po Po could come visit. The grandparents haven't been to outer space in years, and Miles says that the Callistos will show them everything they know. Since the grandparents are retired, they hope to see the Callistos more often. Phoebe tells everyone to get to the Star Jetter, as they are having the Lantern festival on Earth's moon. This is because "lunar" means moon. Gong Gong says "Let's rocket!", and Miles reveals that that is where Phoebe gets the catchphrase from.
Everyone soon arrives at the moon, and Leo tells them if they are ready for the Lantern festival when Phoebe interrupts, informing them about a call from the Tomorrowland Transit Authority. Admirals Watson and Crick call, introducing themselves to the "not Callistos". They then brief everyone on their next mission: a TTA lunar research satellite has crashed into one of the Moon's craters. Since they are already there, they need to find the satellite and bring it back to their ship. After the mission is accepted, the transmission ends. Phoebe and Leo decide to go on the mission while everyone else sets up the decorations for the Lantern festival.
After Phoebe and Leo leave on the Scout, Loretta finds out that people are lighter on the Moon than on Earth because the Moon has less gravity. This makes getting to places more quicker and, according to Miles, more blastastic. M.E.R.C. tests it out, and falls into a crater, but is okay. Loretta tells Po Po that craters are formed when an asteroid hits the Moon. Gong Gong suggests to Miles that they tell the Jade Rabbit that, as he lives here. There is no rabbit on the Moon because this is a story, Gong Gong's favorite growing up. When a young lady who went to live on the Moon felt lonely, the Jade Rabbit came to keep her company. They say that the rabbit is visible when you look up or down. Gong Gong knows another story: about a boy and his robo-ostrich setting up the best Lantern festival ever once they got going. This motivates Miles and M.E.R.C. to set up the decorations.
While taking the Scout, Phoebe finds two pieces of the missing satellite when the Scout crashes into another piece. Leo did not expect the satellite to be in pieces. Phoebe tells everyone that the mission is taking longer than expected, but the decorations look very good in the lunar dome. After the call ends, Gong Gong tells Miles that they need to set the table, and everything will be ready. Miles reminds him of the fireworks, which are the best part of the festival. If Miles unloads them, Gong Gong will set them up.
Miles and M.E.R.C. head back to the Star Jetter, but have trouble moving the box of fireworks. Miles decides to turn off the gravity, but once M.E.R.C. sends the box of fireworks outside of the ship, one of the fireworks goes off, leading to the box breaking through the Moon's gravity and the firework exploding, upsetting Miles and M.E.R.C., who did not mean to lose the crate. Gong Gong and Po Po decide that they will get the box back with the Star Jetter with help from Miles, Loretta, and M.E.R.C.
Even though it has been a while, Po Po knows how to control the ship because she is an engineer, meaning that she helped build most of the ships the TTA uses and tested them out too. After takeoff, Gong Gong realizes that Po Po likes to go fast, and Loretta believes that this is where Miles gets it from. Gong Gong locates the missing box of fireworks at eleven degrees starboard. He can read holo-screens despite not being into space recently because he spent lots of years tracking comets in the observatory. Once Miles and M.E.R.C. see the fireworks, they head out of the ship to retrieve them.
Miles then wraps his Blastbuckle tether around his Lazerang, which successfully catches the box, but one end of the Lazerang sets off another firework, causing Miles to be stuck with the crate. Gong Gong decides to go after him, since his hover-chair works in space and is rocket-powered. Gong Gong then opens the crate, releasing the firework for it to explode, re-attaches the Blastbuckle to the crate, and zooms off. Miles wonders how Gong Gong got those moves, and Gong Gong says that those moves are from watching Miles, and you learn as you go. They then decide to bring the crate back to the Lantern festival.
Once everything is prepared, Loretta tells Leo and Phoebe that they can never be bored in outer space, and Miles tells them how great Gong Gong and Po Po are. Miles decides for Leo to set off the fireworks. After the fireworks go off, Miles thanks Gong Gong for getting them back, as they are the best part of the Lantern festival. Gong Gong says that what the fireworks form is the best part.
