At my house, Pi Day is usually celebrated by eating pies.Usually, chicken pot pie for dinner and a pie for dessert. The Eldest wanted to make a Pluot Galette she had seen on a cooking show. Except Pi Day coincides with a blizzard expected to whack the region with mass quantities of snow. The galette a little too time intensive as the focus must be on storm prep and all cooking or baking done the day before the storm. So another time for the galette.
Himself requested an apple pie. Granny Smith apples waiting to be peeled, cored, and sliced. Store-bought crust will be a huge time saver. I never emptied the buckets of water for toilet flushing from the first big storm back at the beginning of the Winter so all I had to do was fill the pitchers with drinking water. I was cooking a pot roast in the crockpot for dinner on Monday, but the electricians for the solar panels showed up to do some work and had to shut the electricity off for 3 or so hours. Himself suggested we send out for sandwiches and I cooked the pot roast for Pi Day dinner.
Since everyone will be home during the storm, the plan is to have the main meal at noon. I'll just reheat the pot roast and fixings as long as the electricity doesn't go out. Otherwise, it will be cold pot roast. Fingers crossed we don't lose electricity.
But back to Pi Day prep. Apples have been prepared, tossed with sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice and put into the bottom crust.
While waiting for the oven to heat, the top crust was put on, edges sealed and fluted. An egg wash was brushed on to give the pie a nice golden sheen and some sugar was sprinkled on for extra yummies. For fun, a Π symbol was cut into the top crust to vent steam. The pie shield will prevent the crust from browning too quickly. Thanks, Ma!
While we wait for the pie to cool
I'll set out some cups and we can use the beautiful Celtic knot coasters my friend, Red, made for me as it's almost St. Patrick's Day, too.
You can have your choice of tea. English Breakfast, Salted Caramel, Cinnamon, Earl Grey, English Teatime, good ol' Tetley, Vanilla Chai, White Christmas, Holiday Chai, decaf Tetley, Honey Vanilla Chamomile, or Lemon Ginger,
For those who drink coffee, I make horrible coffee. I wouldn't know as I don't drink coffee, but The Brother has assured me, I make wretched coffee. He usually stops at the Dunkin' Donuts on the way to the house to buy his coffee. If you don't want to stop at Dunkin's (we also recently got a Starbuck's), The Eldest has a Keurig brewer. Your choice for coffee is French Vanilla or a classic Donut Blend (I'm assuming it's supposed to be like the coffee you'd get at Dunkin' Donuts)
Before we lose electricity, let's see if the pie is ready, shall we?

Hope the storm doesn't turn out to be as bad as you think. Your pie looks absolutely delicious. Stay safe! Happy T Day, hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping the storm isn't as bad as predicted, too.
DeleteThe storm likes a real threat. I hope it stays away
ReplyDeleteThe Pie looks delicious and I am sure you will all enjoy the feast.
Happy T Day
Love Chrissie xx
This is a big storm. Not just for Massachusetts, but a good portion of the Eastern seaboard, too. Pie will make the snow bearable. (-;
DeleteYour pie looks yummy and I think as I read your post that you are well prepared for the storm.
ReplyDeleteI had a smile at Pi day and admit I've never heard of it, so a new fact has been learned today.
Happy T day and stay safe.
Yvonne xx
We're as prepared for the storm as we possibly can. Thanks for the well wishes.
DeleteI sure hope you don't lose your electric-we live very rural and a few years ago we lost ours for 19 days so having no water was an issue after the first week-we have woods stoves though for heat and I could cook on our gas stove.
ReplyDeleteyour pie looks delicious, I bought apples the other day too for pie baking.
I had never heard of Pi day before til I read something about it on King arthur flours site-enjoy your meal and stay warm and safe
Happy T day
Kathy
My biggest worry is losing electricity. We don't have a fireplace or a wood stove so staying warm will be an issue. Not to mention, the possibility of the basement flooding if the sump pump can't do its job. Not going to think about that. Looking forward to pie. Happy T Day
DeleteI completely forgot about Pi day, even though I also like to celebrate it. After all, I was a math major at one time! Your pie for Pi day looks wonderful. I've never seen one of those shields, but it certainly did the trick.
ReplyDeleteI remember in January when I worried I might loose power due to ice storms predicted in my area. Thankfully, the storm missed my area, but western KS was so devastated, it was eight days before everyone's power was back on. I hope that's not the case with you and you have not just lots of food, but heat and water, too.
I will bring my own coffee, thank you. But I am grateful that you care about us by offering both tea and coffee. That's a very good host.
Thanks for sharing pie and drinks with us for Pi day and T this Tuesday, 3.14.
My mother was a lover of all kinds of kitchen gadgets and things. She gave me the pie shield. Certainly a lot easier than trying to put foil around the crust edges. We are prepared as we can be for the storm. Water and food we have. And we won't lose anything that's in the freezer if the electricity goes out. Can always move it to the sun room. Losing heat is the big worry. Why this house wasn't built with a fireplace is beyond me. But let's not buy trouble. Let's have that pie. And you were very smart to bring your own coffee.
DeleteAs I am typing we are in the midst of a nasty Nor'easter bringing lots of snow and wind-so I hope none of us lose power. Perfect day for pie baking-yes, so long as we don't lose power...love your coasters-and the right initial for me too:) I'll have a cup of coffee first and then tea later in the day:) Stay safe and happy T day!
ReplyDeleteMisery loves company. We're in the same storm! Hope you and yours are safe and warm, too.

My pleasure, buddy. Head butts to you and Ink.
DeleteI hope that storm is not nearly as severe as predicted.....we have been hearing about it on the news way out here on the west coast.
ReplyDeleteFresh, homemade apple pie......my mouth is now demanding some....*grin*
Happy T-day
So far, it seems to be acting like predicted. We're at the height of the storm now. Still have electricity so grab your fork, I'm about to heat up the pie.
DeleteWhat a great fun way to celebrate Pi Day and your apple pie looks so delicious! I hope you are keeping warm with all the snow that's been forecast, enjoy your pies and wishing you happiness this T and Pi Day! J :-)
ReplyDeleteSnug as a rug in a bug.And trying patiently to wait for pie
DeleteHappy Pi Day! We celebrate it at our house, too, and I'm going out with my daughter in a bit for pie and coffee. What fun :)
ReplyDeleteHappy T Tuesday
:-D What kind of pie are you getting? Happy Pi Day!
DeleteWell heres hoping the storm doesn't wallop you too badly. I must say you are prepared.. much more prepared then i've ever had to be... Ofcourse i think all it would take is one time of NOT being prepared to cure me.. lol Your pie looks yummy! Hmmm.. i wonder if my granddaughter knows her birthday is the same as Einsteins??? lol Happy happy T day! Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteThat's what did it for me. One time not being prepared and we lost electricity. A big deal here as no electricity, no water being pumped from the well to the house. No electricity, no water to flush the toilet. Yup, one time. :-D
DeleteAnd Happy Birthday to your granddaughter!
DeleteThe snow put us both on the same wavelength-geek out and all. I also made a granny smith apple pie today. :) Gosh it it blowing up a storm here. Hope you are lounging with a full tummy from the pie and still have power. Hugs-Erika
ReplyDeletePie was great. Not as windy now, but rain/sleet. I just came in from shoveling the front stairs and walk. Pushed avalanches of snow of the cars so Himself could shovel around and do the car shuffle. Power is still on so a great day. Hope you're safe as well.
DeleteHappy Pi/Pie day! Hope the power stayed on long enough to finish baking the pie and cooking the pot roast! :)
ReplyDeleteAll the cooking and baking was done yesterday, Monday. Just in case we did lose power, I didn't want to be in the middle of baking. Electricity didn't fail so all I had to do today was heat and eat. (-:
DeleteOh My! I realise how lucky we are as we have never had really bad storms here(I know other parts of the UK have!) I have just read through your comments so I do know that you could at least bake your pie! Hope you are still keeping warm! Happy T day! Chrisx
ReplyDeleteWas a good day. Electricity held and I don't think the storm was as bad as predicted. Or maybe we were just too well prepared.
DeletePie for Pi day. That is cool.
ReplyDeleteAnd delicious, too. Even if we forgot to buy whipped cream or ice cream.
DeleteI hope the electricity held! Our power always goes off in bad weather or snow. So we are prepared. We hardly have anything electric. We cook on bottled gas and heat our house with woodburners or an almond shell burner. Our hot water comes from a solar panel, so in bad weather we won't have hot water. But hey, one day without a shower won't kill us.
ReplyDeleteDid you all eat the pie (warm)? I sincerely hope so, it looks delish.
Yes, I like to celebrate Pi day as well. Sometimes I make it a P day and cook pizza instead.
Happy Pi and T-Day,
Lisca
Yes, no loss of power. What a relief. We ate some of the pie. Still more for another day. Happy Pi and T Day
DeleteYou crack me up about your coffee. My son thinks I am crazy because I settle for instant coffee as I'm the only one in the house who drinks it, and he thinks instant coffee is nasty. lol. why make a whole pot for one person? Your pie looks fabulous, I need one of those pie shields as I am forced to fiddle with strips of aluminum foil. happy T (and Pi) day!
ReplyDeleteIt's the same way with me nuking water for a cup of tea. Why boil a whole kettle of water for just one person. The pie shield is a very handy tool to have.
DeleteGood that the storm was as bas as predicted!
ReplyDeleteWe a big storm in the summer here in 2011 which damaged so so much !
Happy T-Day!
We lucked out. Gottseidank!
Deletenever heard about pi day;) but for sure i´d like a Piece of your pie:) i just love apple pies!!
ReplyDeletehappy belated t-day!
Himself's favorite pie is apple. Grab a fork and dig in!
DeleteOMG.I'll be right over for a piece of that mouth watering pie.
ReplyDeleteThe other pi.....I'm totally lost.
C'mon over! And we'll talk about Pi
DeletePS I use the Green Mountain decaf cups.
ReplyDeleteI'll make sure I pick some up when you come over.
DeleteMy pi day apple pie was purely coincidental; but I like your tradition of celebrating pi day and am putting it on my calendar for next year! I hope you didn't lose power, but you sure were well-prepared.
ReplyDeleteWe have the same situation with a water pump that goes out with the power. So we know about the buckets of water lined up in the bathrooms! This year we finally put a tinaco (plastic water tank) on the roof. When the pump goes out, a valve opens on the tinaco and we can get limited water by gravity for toilets, etc. I guess that wouldn't work in MA where you have freezing temps. Too bad.
I hope it was a happy T-day, CJ! Hugs, Eileen
It's a superstition with me. If I go overboard with storm preparations, we don't lose electricity. When I don't prepare, there are major problems. Learned the hard way.
DeleteOh, that tinaco sounds perfect, but wouldn't be practical here.
We have had rain and storms since Friday and what a blessing! It is the end of summer here and I am grateful fall starts tomorrow.Never heard of Pi Day. Love your apple pie and your whole post. Have a magical week!Happy belated T Day!
ReplyDeleteI am anxious for the warm weather and Summer to start. Spring is a bit like Winter. Usually cold and wet without all the shoveling. Thanks for popping up over.
DeleteThe pie looked so good! I bet it tasted good too!
