Afghanistan is not exactly history quite yet as there still will be a lot final adjustments on the ground as well as the usual Vietnam-syndrome war of words that inevitably follows on yet another American-engineered foreign catastrophe. But the recriminations will go nowhere as there is certainly enough mud to stick on both major political parties that make Washington their home, and neither wants to be embarrassed to such an extent that anyone will actually demand change.
Regarding Afghanistan itself, I often recall hearing from a CIA friend of mine who served as the last Chief of Station in Kabul in the 1970s before the start of the Mujaheddin insurgency against the Marxist-Leninist government that was then in place eventually forced the US Embassy to close. He remarked how liberated the city was, full of smartly dressed attractive women and well-turned-out men going about their business. Though there was considerable repression in rural areas, education was highly prized by the people in the cities while many aspects of fundamental Islam were made illegal.
All of that came to a crashing halt when the United States and Saudi Arabia supported the Mujaheddin and eventually created al-Qaeda in a bid to damage the Soviets, who had intervened in the country and were backers of the Kabul regime headed by Babrak Karmal. Zbigniew Brzezinski was the “brain” behind the plan, in part to do payback for the Soviet role in Vietnam and in part because Zbig apparently had difficultly in separating his attachment for Poland, at the time part of the Soviet empire, from his role as national security adviser for Jimmy Carter, President of the United States of America.
To be sure, wars that are unsuccessful, like Vietnam and Afghanistan, do generate a certain blowback. It was regularly observed that the 1990-1 US-led Desert Storm operation followed by a victory parade down Fifth Avenue in New York City helped the United States recover from Vietnam fatigue. That meant that it would not hesitate to again use armed force to enforce its often touted “rules based international order,” best translated as US global hegemony.
Some might suggest that the best thing to do about Afghanistan is to learn from it. Hold senior officials and officers responsible for the egregious errors in judgement that led to disaster. But that will never happen as the top levels of the US government operate like a large social club where everyone protects everyone else. A Marine Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Scheller who has called for accountability at senior levels has already been relieved of his command and is leaving the service, a warning from above to others who might be similarly inclined to be outspoken.
So, with all that in mind, the best was to make Afghanistan go away is to begin preparations for the next war. Since that is so, how lucky is President Joe Biden to have a visit at this very critical moment from Israel’s new Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who presented the president with a “new strategic vision” for the Middle East. In preparation for the visit, White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that the prime minister’s visit “will strengthen the enduring partnership between the United States and Israel, reflect the deep ties between our governments and our people, and underscore the United States’ unwavering commitment to Israel’s security.” Psaki, who conflates the deep ties between the Democratic Party and its Jewish donors with a “partnership,” predictably said everything demanded of her, only stopping short of turning in her application to join the Israel Defense Force (IDF).
Bennett met on the day before the White House meeting with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley and also separately with Secretary of State Antony Blinken. It is not known how many standing ovations were given to Bennett by the simpering US officials, but it is presumed that they were necessary as filler for the event because Austin and Milley in particular are notably inarticulate and poorly informed. The lumpish Austin did, however, echo Psaki in coming out with the usual message, telling Bennett that the Pentagon is absolutely “committed” to ensuring Israel can “defend itself” against the Iranians, that “The administration remains committed to Israel’s security and right to self-defense. That is unwavering, it is steadfast and it is ironclad.”
Bennett was engaged in delivering his timely message that the fall of Afghanistan has actually made everything in that part of Asia more dangerous, meaning that the US and Israel should prepare to fight Iran when it seeks to take advantage of the situation. More to the point, Bennett also made time to meet with the omnipotent Israel Lobby as represented by the head of its most powerful component, Executive Director Howard Kohr of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
The actual discussion with Biden and who-knows-who else in the room was also predictable, minus only that Biden did not feel compelled to go down on his knees as he did with visiting outgoing Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and his chief of staff Rivka Ravitz in early July. Perpetual victim Israel was presented by Bennett as facing hostilities coming from its southern border where Hamas controls the Gaza Strip. Neither Bennett nor Biden mentioned the enormous advantage in military power that Israel already possesses, as was evident in the conflict that took place three months ago, an 11-day war that left 265 dead in Gaza, including many targeted children in apartment blocks, while only 13 died in Israel.
Bennett had two principal objectives. First, he was looking for a commitment from Biden not to re-engage with Iran in the nuclear proliferation treaty Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) unless it is greatly “improved” to include peripheral regional issues as well as eliminating any uranium enrichment. As Iran is prepared to accepted the status quo ante and nothing more, Bennett knew perfectly well that his insistence on a broader agreement would be a game-breaker. And second, as a consequence of that expected commitment, he wanted assurances that the US will not withdraw its remaining forces from Iraq and Syria and would support Israel fully if it should choose to attack Iran.
Israel’s Ambassador to the US Gilad Erdan has also been pushing the White House to admit Israel to the so-called Visa Waiver Program, which would allow Israelis to travel freely to the United States without having to obtain a visa. The program usually requires reciprocity which would mean that Israel would in turn have to admit all American travelers, but the Jewish state insists on reserving the right to block Arab and Muslim Americans for no reason whatsoever. It is presumed that Bennett discussed the issue with Blinken.
On the other more important issues, Biden appears to have bought into at least some of what Bennett was selling. In comments made after their meeting, with the Israeli standing beside him, the US President said that “We’re putting diplomacy first and see where that takes us. But if diplomacy fails, we’re ready to turn to other options.” Bennett was pleased by what he was hearing, elaborating on it, “I was happy to hear your clear words that Iran will never be able to acquire a nuclear weapon and that you emphasize that you will try the diplomatic route, but there’s other options if that doesn’t work out.” The other “options” include, of course, intensified covert action intelligence operations, assassinations and a hoped-for bombing attack on Iranian nuclear facilities and weapons sites. Attacking Iran will also have the benefit of demonstrating that Biden is a “tough” leader, surely a consideration at this point when his approval ratings are sinking.
The prime minister also surfaced another proposal for all his interlocutors, including Biden. He wants to upgrade his fleet of F-15 fighter bombers to give his military planners more options if there should be a war with Iran. The US produced F-35 is the primary fighter for IDF, but the older F-15 can carry significantly more weaponry and bomb load. Bennett has asked Washington to provide an advance on its annual $3.8 billion military assistance package to pay for the improvements. In other words, Israel wants to start a war and have the United States pay for it, possibly in addition to actually doing much of the fighting.
Israel has, in fact, been warning that a war is coming for quite some time, a message that was delivered yet again in a timely fashion as Bennett winged his way to Washington for his meetings. As the prime minister was landing in the US, IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi held a press conference in which he advised that the Israeli military advancing its “operational plans” against Iran. He observed that the country’s new military budget had funds earmarked specifically to improve IDF capabilities against Iran. Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz also warned on the same day that “The State of Israel has the means to act and will not hesitate to do so. I do not rule out the possibility that Israel will have to take action in the future in order to prevent a nuclear Iran.”
So, the new Israeli premier has laid down the gauntlet and, for the moment, Joe Biden has only tentatively moved to pick it up even if he has in a sense pledged total support for Israel no matter what the Jewish state decides to do. The Israel Lobby meanwhile will be working hard to bring Joe totally into line. And to be sure Biden will have to reckon with the fact that there is a new player in town in the form of a bunch of progressive Democrats who are not in love with Israel, backed up by shrinking public support for Israeli actions resulting from the recent slaughter in Gaza. Nevertheless, a weakened and disoriented Biden will have only limited ability to stand up to an increasingly assertive Israel and its powerful lobby.

I suspect KSA and other states may be re-calibrating their relationship with the US which, after the Kabul debacle will appear less militarily capable, unable to make a clean exit from a pointless “forever” war, and a much less reliable partner.
The US offers conflict and military hardware, while being likely to cut and run; the US is therefore unreliable beyond the short term. China, with its Belt and Road Initiative, offers a commercial relationship without imposing any demands for “liberalisation,” and likely offers greater long term stability.
If Israel elects to light up the ME most of the other states will likely find themselves on the front line of the conflict. While I doubt they would register any public complaint, I suspect they would voice concern to the US via back channels and seek to avoid any overt Israel/US/Iran conflict. If the US continues its support for Israel it is likely to further weaken its position in the ME.
This statement could have been uttered by every press secretary since Ronald Reagan, if not LBJ.

The US obviously can’t use Turkish, Syrian, or Iraqi bases to mount an attack on Iran. Afghanistan is right out. I doubt if Pakistan would care for the domestic repercussions of hosting a US attack on Iran. Iran’s 2019 attack of Saudi Arabia’s oil refinery pretty much made it clear to both Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Emirates that offering a platform for the US to openly attack Iran would prove economically suicidal.
Where are we going to attack Iran from? We may just have to leave it alone.
After mandating the death shot which will have a more serious blowback than the Anthrax death shot of the 90s and later, and after the onslaught of political correctness and glorification of racism against the majority and perversion, will the military be capable of attacking Iran? I think this talk about Israel attacking Iran is nonsense. It is designed for domestic consumption in Israel. Any Israeli prime minister who does not talk about war with Iran would be quickly demonised and lose power.
An Israeli jet cannot take off from Israel without all the countries in the area knowing about it. The Iranians would know right away from their sources. The fake “stealth” only works when the plane is heading straight for you. F-15’s are far better planes and they make no pretense to being stealthy.
If the Azerbaijanis were stupid enough to allow the Israelis to use their airfields, that would be the end of their independence. They were a part of Iran at one time. Stalin removed it using the Soviet army. Anyway, the Iranians would know all about it right away – days in advance perhaps.
Israel’s situation bears some resemblance to the dilemma of the USA in Europe. There is no way the USA can mobilise in Europe without the Russians being aware of it. There will definitely be an Afghanistan Syndrome, and Pentagon plus US intelligence agencies will want to prove somehow, somewhere that they can still fight and win wars. But are American people — who for most part cannot distinguish between Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, etc–really ready to fight another war right now? If one envisages an Iraq War type scenario against Iran, one would need — for invasion of Iran — a two million man army (how many troops would Israel be ready to commit?). One would be fighting an army of equal size, with considerable combat experience, on its own turf. Where does one invade? What would immediate repercussions be — in Persian Gulf, for Saudi Arabia, for Israel? Only realistic option for defeating Iran would be a nuclear war, but Iranians would be prepared for this eventuality. And even with conventional weapons would be capable of massive counter strikes–against Saudi Arabia, against UAE (Dubai), against Israel. Alternative would be invasion of Grenada Part II.

There is effectively no meaningful support for Israel in the shrinking Democrat Party base. For the moment, the party donors keep Israel as above the pay grade of the rank and file.
That leaves MAGA and, believe me, they are none too pleased that the Israeli PM rushed to Washington to prop up Biden right as the “Biden ” administration was executing a well-planned national humiliation set-piece that was Obama’s signature (e.g. Benghazi).
Israel isn’t the only country to estrange itself from the American people by sidling up to this illegitimate regime, just among the ones with the most to lose.

As you would expect, that is the exact opposite of the truth. The end of illegal war of aggression against Afghanistan has vastly improved the prospects for peace in Asia, and most Asians will immediately understand this.

It is a bit more complicated than that. The biggest destroyer of the Ottoman Empire were the early Young Turks, who pushed for Turkish nationalism which in turn led to alienation of Arabs. The Ottoman Empire was seeing its power waning w.r.t European powers including Russia for a long time. So many Ottomans/Turks were looking for answers and also self reflection. This partly was leading to Turkish nationalism in the Ottoman Empire. These revolutionaries wanted to depose the Old Ottoman system. Earlier we had groups like the ‘Ottoman Union Society’ made up of intellectuals and officers of the Imperial Military Medical School of Constantinople. One more later such revolutionary faction was the CUP or the “Committee for Unity and Progress” who were related to the Young Turks. Some of their leading members included Ismail Enver Pasha, Mehmed Talaat Pasha, Ahmed Djemal Pasha etc…Some of the founding members of the Young Turks were non Turkish Muslims of the Ottoman Empire such as Ibrahim Temo who was Albanian, Mehmed Reshid who was Circassian, Abdullah Cevdet who was Kurdish, Ishak Sukuti who was Kurdish too etc… There were other groups such as the ‘The Young Ottomans’, ‘League of Private Initiative and ‘the Ottoman Liberty Association’. In 1906, the Young Turks forced the Sultan Abdulhamid II for constitutional reforms. Some believe many of these are connected to Freemasonry or Donmeh Jews or Frankists or Globalist Zionists etc… and that may be true. The protocols of Zion does speak of Turkey at the end after they have done their “revolutions’” in Europe. So that is all possible.
But this led to more Turkification and Turkish nationalism. This caused a reaction in Arabs in the Ottoman Empire, leading to Arab nationalism. Similar Arab societies came up in responses among Arab intellectuals some being like the ‘Young Arab Society’ (Jam’iyat al-Arabiya al-Fatat), ‘Covenant Society’ (Al-Ahd) etc… These groups did not want independence from the Ottoman Empire but more devolution of power in Arab areas within the Ottoman Empire, more autonomy in response to rising Turkish Nationalism. Of all the non-Turks who felt insulted and alienated the most by the increasing Turkish Nationalism within the earlier pan-Islamic Ottoman Empire were the Arabs of the Hijaz as historically they are of high respect as Mecca and Medina is there, so it hurt ego even more.

Of course the Soviets, Chinese Communists with the blessing of FDR’s USA made a war in between the Japanese Empire and Chinese nationalists to weaken both sides to bring Communism in the Far East. For the Japanese Empire, Manchuria was a bulwark against Communism. The Japanese Empire thought they could create a friendly Turko Empire in Central Asia as a second bulwark against the Soviets. Indeed Abdul Kareem, the descendant of the Ottoman Sultans was in Japan at that time. The Japanese planned to create a pan Central Asian Turkic State by liberating the Turkish peoples from the USSR and make Abdul Kareem the ruler so that they could be an ally and form a bulwark against a common threat.
At that time in Xinjiang things were a bit messy as along with Pan Turkish groups some Pan-Islamist groups were operating there along with Communist agents etc… China was divided into warlords at that time, and Xinjinag was then ruled by a Han warlord Yang Zengxin. He was a tolerant guy so got along with the native Uyghurs reasonably well. Interestingly Gansu, the province of China proper next door was ruled by Hui Muslim Ma family (Ma Clique) warlords.
Yang was later replaced by Jun Shuren, another Han leader of Xinjiang, who was far more oppressive when dealing with the local Uyghurs. He got involved in the invasion of a semi-autonomous region of China known as the Kumul Khanate, one of the remnants of the Mongol Khanates who appealed to the Ma family of Gansu for aid and they obliged. They sent an invasion force into Xinjiang from Gansu. they had the support of the KMT but interestingly they had some Japanese officers in their army.
Even more interesting, the War Lord of Xinjiang, Jun Shuren recruited many White anti-Communist Nationalist Russians in his army but at the same time received help from Soviet Russia too!! So you had Soviet support along with anti-Communist White Russian troops of Jun Shuren’s Xinjiang Army fighting KMT supported and Japanese officer led troops of the Hui Muslim Ma warlord family!!!! Later with the help of White Russians, Jun Shuren was replaced in a coup. The Uighur rose up, rebelled and formed their own independent state called the East Turkestan Republic. They saw the Han and even the Hui as enemies and wanted unification with the other Turkic peoples of Central Asia under Soviet Occupation.
The Soviets were themselves facing their own Central Asian problems and had to put down many rebellions of native Central Asians such as the Basmachi Rebellion by Central Asians against the Soviet State which lasted from 1917 till 1934!!! And guess who took part in this liberation movement of the Central Asian Turkic peoples against the Soviets, Enver Pasha of the Young Turks!!! He was involved in the Armenian genocide BTW. In Central Asia he began to call himself “Commander in Chief of all Armies of Islam and Emir of Turkestan”. During the Qing Dynasty China, there was a revolt in Xinjiang known as the Dzungar revolt followed by the Dzungar Genocide. There was also the Kingdom of Yettishar also known as Kashgaria, a Sunni Muslim Turkic state that existed in Xinjiang between 1865 and 1877 during the Dungan Revolt against the Qing dynasty. In 1873, the state was recognized by the Ottoman Empire as a vassal and the Ottomans supported their struggle against the Chinese with weapons and money. However in 1877, Chinese Imperial troops entered Kashgar crushing all resistance and bringing the area under Chinese rule.
Anyways later in the 1930s, many Turks like Muhsin Capanolu supported all these Turkic/ Turanist rebellions against the Soviets and the Han Chinese who was a Pan-Turkic but Ataturk supported the Chinese Nationalists in crushing the Uighurs. However Afghan King Zahir Shah supported East Turkestan, indeed an Afghan battalion fought to the last man in defending this East Turkestan Republic from the Chinese. In the Battle of Kashgar in 1933 there were multiple factions fighting each other with atrocities on all sides. Villages torched and all that. Some reports come from Georg Vasel a German Nazi Engineer in the area who was building airports. Remember the Third Reich Germans were allies of the Chinese Nationalists at this time. There were Christian missionaries, Swedes (Sven Hedin) and even Tawfiq Bay, a Syrian Arab
who was close to the Ibn Sauds!! Tawfiq bay would be involved in the Uighur independence struggle against the Chinese in the Battle of Kashgar. Both the KMT Chinese and the Soviets opposed Uighur independence and supported crushing it mercilessly. However some Japanese Generals of the Kwatung Army (independent from Tokyo) were seeing an opportunity of a second buffer state in between Soviet Russia and China to prevent the spread of Communism.
Also worth noting is that many Turks admired Japan after the Japanese victory in the Russo-Japanese War. Example like Halide Edip, Turkish novelist who named her son Togo after the Japanese Admiral who defeated the Russian Navy. Aburresid Ibrahim a Tatar Muslim Alim born in Russia, who initiated a movement to unite the Crimean Tatars traveled to Japan in Meiji period and became the first imam of Tokyo Camii (mosque). When Manchuria (Manchukuo) became part of the Japanese Empire, some of them Turks and others started petitioning to Japanese generals for their Pan-Turkic/Pan-Turanist aspirations. They formed the ‘Idil Ural Society‘ with Manchurians, Turks, Uighurs etc… Many Turkish emigres in Japan were pushing for a pan-Islamic State in Central Asia and were in contact with powerful Imperial Japanese Army Generals on this issue. Some of them even became agents of the Japanese Empire in other parts of the World. In 1933, the exiled Ottoman prince Sehzade Mehmed Abdul Karim arrived in Japan, grandson of the last Ottoman Sultan and Caliph of all Islam. He was received by prominent Japanese statesmen, top Japanese Imperial Generals and prominent Turkish emigres. Soon Japanese weapons were finding their way to Turkic rebels and the Ottoman prince was waiting to be crowned Sultan of future Turkestan made up of the Central Asian republics of the Soviet Union and Xinjiang with the help of the Japanese Empire. The Japanese Empire had already installed ex- Chinese Emperor Aisin Gioro Puyi as the Emperor of Manchukuo (Manchuria) as a bulwark against Soviet Communism. Thus the Japanese Empire hoped that Manchuria along with the new Ottoman Sultanate of Turkestan would be Japanese allies and buffers against the Soviet Communists. The Soviets getting wind of this simply invaded Xinjiang and crushed all hopes for a new Ottoman Turkestan and defeating the Chinese forces as well. The Soviets told the local Chinese Warlord that if an independent Islamic State was created in the South of Xinjiang, converting into a second Manchuria at the back door of the USSR, they would not just be side watchers but would start to ACT. Maybe the Soviets may have used this fear of a Japanese allied Turkestan as an excuse to invade but press in the Middle East especially in Palestine also reported of these plans of putting an Ottoman Prince on a throne of a new Ottoman Empire in Central Asia with Japanese Imperial help.

In pleading his case, the King argued that America had a moral obligation to help, in return for the oil concessions. Ibn Saud also felt that he had put himself in a very precarious position with respect to his own people, and that only U.S assistance would help:
“The whole people [are] saying that my country is an American colony. They are plotting against me and saying Ibn Said has given his country to the United States, even the Holy Places. They are talking against me. I have nothing, and my country and my wealth I have delivered into the hands of America”

The truth is the Americans got involved only by the invitation of the Pakistani ISI. It was Pakistani President Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq who invited the Americans. It was only then did the USA get involved and think of giving the USSR their very own Vietnam.
The Americans never created any civil war in 1970. It was a natural reaction of the Afghan people against Communism. Communism was never popular in the traditional countryside except in a small section. It was popular in the cities and mostly among Western educated youth. Nur Muhammad Taraki’s government went too fast against religion in conservative society like Afghanistan. He even said that mosques would be empty within a year in Afghanistan and angered the Mullahs. Afghans resisted these Communist reforms and the regime reacted by using terror to brutally push through their reforms on the society. Many were tortured and interned in prison camps throughout Afghanistan, the most famous being the Pul-e-Charkhi Prison. Entire families were executed by the Communist regime, there are Afghans even today who remember that horro and have lost family members. Within a few months of coming in power thousands of Afghans were arrested, imprisoned and then executed. The socialist agrarian reforms implemented by the Afghan Communist regime (DRA), not only contradicted Afghan traditions and the principles of Islam, in many cases worsened the situation of the rural poor they were supposed to reward. The Khalq, a branch of the Afghan Communists were persecuting religious dignitaries, including Pir and Ulema, which was bound create reaction among Muslims. Also the government’s literacy campaign, had become controversial due to the practice of mixed-gender literacy classes in a very conservative Islamic society. Starting in May 1978 in Nuristan, spontaneous uprisings took place throughout Afghanistan against the Communist DRA and its policies. The Afghan Communist regime was facing serious unrest and resistance in the conservative countryside outside Kabul. Their followers were beginning to mutiny against the regime and the Communist regime was losing control. One famous uprising was the The Herat uprising which was both a popular uprising and a mutiny of Afghan Army troops against the Communist Regime (Democratic Republic of Afghanistan). After the insurgents seized and held the city for about a week, the regime was able to retake it with its own forces, and the subsequent aerial bombardment and brutal recapture of Herat left 3,000 to 25,000 of its inhabitants dead. It is then that Taraki went and met Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev, the general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and wanted Soviet intervention in helping propping up his collapsing regime. But many in the Soviet Government were against intervention, the Soviets were actually alarmed at what was happening in Afghanistan and were fearful of its effects spreading into its own Central Asian republics. Also there was this rivalry in between Amin and Tariki within the Communist Regime DRA. Initially friends, Tariki accused Amin of nepotism and corruption after Amin got his family members in the Government. It all ended with conspiracies, assassination attempts on Amin and eventually Amin taking over power via the Army and killing Tariki. it was Tariki’s death which alarmed Brezhnev and played a part in the eventual Soviet intervention of Afghanistan. The USA had nothing to do with it.

Humans are far less likely to be critical of future questionable beliefs or actions of those who they perceive as victims, especially victims of what people perceive as horrible atrocities, excusing even the most immoral, criminal behavior with, “Well, the poor Jews, they’ve been through so much hate and persecution.”

More generally, hate the crime and the criminal, but don’t hate the criminal’s ethnic group, nationality, or race, because there are always members of that group that are different: peaceful, patient, lovable, gentle, rational, intelligent, non-evil, and deep-thinkers like many of the commenters here.

Hate, and possibly take action, against the attack and the attacker, but don’t hate every member of the “tribe”, and be careful to apply this principle when you think/speak about these things, and especially if/when you decide to take action on them.

1. teaching people HOW to think properly: requiring logic, facts, and evidence before coming to even semi-solid conclusions, and only then
2. educating them about the truth of the holocaust,
then I have my doubts about its success.

It is a great quote. I love it. To me it says that people have only the rights that they are willing to fight for, whether by words or blows.
However, in the case of combating the holocaust lie, I think that attitude in the quote is premature, since nearly everyone is so brainwashed on the Holocaust issue.
Furthermore, simply telling people the truth of the holocaust is not enough either, unfortunately. Instead, we must teach our children HOW to think. We must make sure they understand the utter importance of it and have a fully functioning Bullshit Detector kit (term coined by Carl Sagan, I think), of which the Orchardist posted a large chunk on his/her post on the UNZ vaccine debate forum (in the first 20 comments, check it out).
