Maurice-Alexis Jarre (13 September 1924 – 28 March 2009) was a French composer and conductor, "one of the giants of 20th century film music" who was "among the most sought-after composers in the movie industry" and "a creator of both subtle underscoring and grand, sweeping themes, not only writing for conventional orchestras... but also experimenting with electronic sounds later in his career."
Although he composed several concert works, Jarre is best known for his film scores, particularly for his collaborations with film director David Lean. Jarre composed the scores to all of Lean's films from Lawrence of Arabia (1962) on. Notable scores for other directors include The Train (1964), Mohammad, Messenger of God (1976), Lion of the Desert (1981), Witness (1985) and Ghost (1990).
Jarre was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Three of his compositions spent a total of 42 weeks on the UK singles chart; the biggest hit was "Somewhere My Love" (to his tune "Lara's Theme", with lyrics by Paul Francis Webster) by the Mike Sammes Singers, which reached Number 14 in 1966 and spent 38 weeks on the chart.
The Night of the Generals is a 1967 Franco-British Second World War crime mystery film directed by Anatole Litvak and produced by Sam Spiegel. It stars Peter O'Toole, Omar Sharif, Tom Courtenay, Donald Pleasence, Joanna Pettet and Philippe Noiret. The screenplay by Joseph Kessel and Paul Dehn was loosely based on the beginning of the novel of the same name by German author Hans Hellmut Kirst. The writing credits also include the line "based on an incident written by James Hadley Chase". Gore Vidal is said to have contributed to the screenplay, but wasn't credited.
The musical score was composed by Maurice Jarre. Much of the film was shot in Warsaw, which was exceptionally rare for a major western film at the height of the Cold War.
The murder of a prostitute in German-occupied Warsaw in 1942 causes Abwehr Major Grau (Omar Sharif) to start an investigation, as she was also a German agent. His evidence soon points to the killer being one of three German general officers: General von Seydlitz-Gabler (Charles Gray); General Kahlenberg (Donald Pleasence), his chief of staff; and General Tanz (Peter O'Toole). Grau's investigation, however, is cut short by his summary transfer to Paris at the instigation of these officers.
The General or The Generals may refer to:
The Generals is the second volume in Simon Scarrow's Revolution quartet, which narrates mostly in alternate chapters, tells the story of Sir Arthur Wellesley (the future Duke of Wellington) and the Corsican Brigadier Napoleon Bonaparte (the future Emperor of France).
In the turbulent aftermath of the French Revolution Napoleon Bonaparte is accused of treachery and corruption. His reputation is saved by his skill in leading his men to victory in Italy and Egypt. But then he must rush home to France to restore order amidst political unrest, and to find peace or victory over the country's enemies, foremost of which is England-and Arthur Wellesley (the future Duke of Wellington).
Wellesley is on the other side of the world in India where British interests are under threat. Wellesley leads vast armies against a series of powerful warlords in campaigns that will result in the creation of the Raj-the jewel in the crown of the British Empire. He returns to England a hardened veteran a more determined than ever to end France's dominion of Europe.
The Night of the Generals: A Novel (German: Die Nacht der Generale) is the 15th novel (of a total of 61) by the German writer Hans Hellmut Kirst, published in 1962.
In German-occupied Poland in 1940 in Warsaw, a prostitute is murdered in a very bestial way. Since the Polish police discover that she is on a list of German informers, they have to summon the German military police. From the lavatory by the staircase an old man has seen the leg of the suspected killer, and states that it was most likely some kind of uniform which the killer wore that he never had seen before, adding that the trousers had a red stripe down the side.
The gathered crowd of German soldiers get angry: "He is accusing a German General!"; but their captain (Hauptmann) stops them, and asks "Why would this man lie to us?".
It has become clear for the Military Police captain that this very repulsive murder has been committed by a general of the German Wehrmacht, and despite all the evil of the Nazi regime behind the front, a general of the German Army is nevertheless not allowed to commit sexual murders. The captain discovers that at the time of the murder only three German generals were present in Warsaw ; he then decides to find out which of them is the killer.

Peter O’Toole and Omar Sharif star in this powerful World War II thriller from director Anatole Litvak (The Snake Pit; Sorry, Wrong Number) about a Nazi general who becomes a serial killer. When a Polish prostitute is brutally murdered in Nazi-occupied Warsaw, her killer is identified only as a German general. For years the crime remains unsolved, until the killer strikes again, bringing this mesmerising mystery to an unforgettable finish. Also starring Tom Courtenay, Donald Pleasence and Christopher Plummer, and with a score by Maurice Jarre, THE NIGHT OF THE GENERALS is an all-star thriller from a master of the form, and Eureka Classics is proud to present the film in its UK debut on Blu-ray. This is a trailer I produced years ago for this largely forgotten film starring Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif.
The Night Of The Generals, from 1967, based on the book of the same name, is about the murder of a prostitute at the hands of one of the three German generals, in Poland, during the second world war. The suspects? Blofeld, Blofeld, and Lawrence Of Abrabia – I mean, Charles Grey, Donald Pleasance, and Peter O'Toole (I mean, they're playing the suspects). The moment I'm looking at here is a defining moment of O'Toole's character, General Tanz. Look at those fingernails! A complete and remastered version of this movie was released on BluRay by Kino International in 2009. It featured scores by Carl Davis, Robert Israel and Lee Irwin. However, there exists a piano score composed by William P. Perry which was done over a different copy of the movie which seemingly was in worse conditions, with many lost frames and changes in the order of the scenes. There are certain scenes -e.g. when Anabelle talks to the Northern Generals in the house- which were lost. This version of the movie was released on DVD by various companies. I wanted to enjoy the BluRay remaster and Perry's score at the same time. Nevertheless, the differences between the two versions of the movie would make this impossible without a full adaptation of the high definition release. In order to ...

I've tried and tried to run and hide
To find a life that's new
But wherever I go I always know
I can't escape from you
A jug of wine to numb my mind
But what good does it do?
The jug runs dry and still I cry
I can't escape from you
These wasted years are souvenirs
Of love I thought was true
Your memory is chained to me
I can't escape from you
There is no end, I can't pretend
That dreams will soon come true
A slave too long to a heart of stone
I can't escape from you
