Could You Survive in the Duke of Wellington's Army?
'Could You Survive in the Duke of Wellington's Army?'
During the Napoleonic Wars the British Army experienced a time of rapid change. At the beginning of the French Revolutionary Wars in 1793, the army was a small, awkwardly administered force of barely 40,000 men. By the end of the period, the numbers had vastly increased to over a quarter of a million soldiers by 1813.
Whilst the battlefields of the early 1800s looked similar to those of centuries gone by, with columns of infantry advancing slowly toward the enemy musket volleys, the British army was starting to diversify, adding specialised and elite units to its forces.

Wellington: The Iron Duke | Military History Documentary | History Is Ours
The Duke of Wellington was the most famous Briton of the first half of the 19th century. His victory over Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815 altered the course of history. The hero of Waterloo became a towering figure in British history for both his achievements and for embodying our notions of Britishness - the stiff upper lip, unfussy straightforwardness and incorruptibility in office - he was the Iron Duke.
This feature length documentary looks behind the iron mask to focus on the intriguing complexities of the Duke of Wellington - his character, personality and relationships, told through his own words and the words of those who knew him best. General, politician, lover, outsider - the programme discovers that the hero of Waterloo was far more complex than his public image.

Napoleonic Wars: Battle of Vitoria 1813
In May 1813, as Napoleon launches a desperate bid to save his empire following the disastrous defeat in Russia, the situation in Spain is particularly precarious. French forces have been weakened to make up for the enormous losses in Russia. But Wellington's Anglo-Portuguese army, as well as the Spanish guerrillas, are stronger than ever. Wellington's advance into Spain will liberate Madrid a second time, and conclude with the final showdown of the Peninsular War - the Battle of Vitoria.
Thank you to Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery for kind permission to use 'The Battle of Vitoria' painting by James Prinsep Beadle.

Peter Snow On the Duke of Wellington 21.09.10
Without his military genius England would have been ruled by an emperor and we could all be speaking French. Instead the Duke of Wellington closed years of fighting with a final decisive victory against France at the Battle of Waterloo. But what was he really like? Veteran broadcaster Peter Snow has been investigating just that in his new book "To War with Wellington."

The First Duke of Wellington's Coronation Robes at Apsley House
To mark the coronation of King Charles III, the 1st Duke of Wellington's coronation robes are on display at Apsley House in London until October 2023.
Keeper of the Wellington Collection, Olivia Fryman discusses the First Duke of Wellington's coronation robes worn at the coronation of George IV in 1821. These sumptuous and elaborate costumes highlight the pomp and pageantry of royal traditions and their recent conservation is an interesting insight into the effort that goes into maintaining fragile objects with such important significance.

Did the Duke of Wellington Call His Men Scum?
"(Our soldiers...) are the very scum of the earth!" It's the most iconic and infamous of Wellington's quotes, and has helped to define popular interpretations of the Napoleonic-era British army for generations. But, what did Wellington actually mean when he said this? What was the context of this seemingly scornful derision of his own men? And what, if anything, can this tell us about Wellington's own character, and the social orders of the Long 18th Century?
If you'd like to read more on the subject, I recommend this article:

In this video, History Hit presenters Luke Tomes (@histluketomes) and Louee Dessent (@loueedj) join the Coldstream Guards 1815 and 95th Rifles - reenactment groups representing real units that served in the Peninsular War and helped to defeat Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo…
You can find out more about the groups here:
https://www.coldstreamguards1815.org.uk/home
https://www.95th-rifles.co.uk
Together, they'll find out how your regiment in the Duke of Wellington’s army would shape your experience on the battlefield and determine your chances of survival.
Taking up the role of a 'redcoat' line infantryman, Louee is thrown in the deep-end as he joins a marching drill crash course, before firing a brown bess musket.
Meanwhile, Luke is taken through the unique light infantry skirmishing tactics used by the green jackets during the Napoleonic Wars, before firing the famous baker rifle and learning how to make musket balls from scratch.
Will Louee survive his drill training? Will Luke be able to fire 3 rounds per minute? Watch the video to find out!

Now the subject of new film 'The Duke' – starring Jim Broadbent as Bunton – Broadbent comes face-to-face with the original painting for the first time.

Drawing on his own vast private correspondence, as well as the diaries and memoirs of those around him, the film uses dramatic reconstruction to create an intimate portrait of the Duke of Wellington.
