Parasites (パラサイト Parasaito?) are one of the different species and natural enemies that inhabits Parasitica, and one of the 13 natural enemies featured in Versus.
Biology[]
The parasites take control of humans by attaching to them. They will lay tiny eggs inside of their hosts; the eggs are mixed in with the host's bodily fluids and are expelled through the mouth or through the skin.[1] Once the parasite has fully taken over its host body, it will erupt from the victim's skin; once parasites reach this stage of possession, they are known as Wurms.[1] Anyone who has come in contact with Wurms are isolated and monitored for 48 hours to ensure they were not infected.
The wurms take on a coarse, misshapen form. Several tentacles sprout from their body, mouths' with sharp, jagged teeth will form across the host's body, and multiple enlarged eyes form across the wurms. The most effective way to neutralize wurms is to incinerate them, thereby limiting their ability to infect nearby organisms.
Victims usually have parasites on their face where the mutation is most notable. Victims become mindless slaves that try to find new hosts. They can also attach to buildings and other inorganic materials. The parasites have also been shown to take over a titan's body, though it's currently unclear whether the titan was reanimated, rejuvenated while alive or had its corpse taken over.
Whenever a parasite has infected a victim, they will show several symptoms such as mild itching across the skin, a mild fever, a change in personality, and a slight increase in violent behavior.[2] However, it is almost impossible to detect who's infected from these symptoms alone. What's more, almost all hosts are unaware that they are infected, and anyone who gets the blood of a parasite-possessed human will become infected as well, allowing the parasite to spread with frightening ease.
Overall Strength[]
As they are parasites, their main strength lies in their ability to take over the bodies of other beings. This not only causes their host to mutate, with some transforming more than others, but they can also cause bodies that are damaged to continue moving and hunt for others to infect. So far they have been shown to be able to control humans and titans. When a parasite takes over a body, it appears to give the host enhanced strength, as shown when a young female prisoner was infected by a host and was capable of killing two humans from the Titan's Crown, who are shown to have very muscular physiques and heightened physical abilities.
However, a weakness they have is that the Parasites are susceptible to illnesses or poisons outside their original world. When Bastz infects the King with a small portion of the Curse, while it weakens the King, it also weakened the Parasite to the point where when it burst from the King, it was much smaller and unable to mutate the King's body. This causes Glasp to theorize that if the host is too sick, the Parasite will weaken and die, which they test by using spells on the infected Zaybi that deteriorate his health to the point the Parasite escapes his body to survive.
Due to their nature, the parasites are not capable of infecting inorganic lifeforms. When the Madalans discussed the threat of the new natural enemies, they confirmed the parasites were incapable of taking over their bodies.[3]
History[]
At some point in the past, these mysterious life forms appeared in the Parasitica, attaching themselves to humans and taking control of nearly all the human population.[4]
Introduction Arc[]
When the multiple worlds fused into one, the parasites were brought along with the rest of the natural enemies. When Hallow and his group are saving civilians, several humans infected by the parasites are seen aimlessly wandering through the streets.[5]
Titans vs The Neo-Humans Arc[]
After the battle between the Titans and the Neo-Humans, one of the titans begins tearing its own flesh. A parasite erupts from the titan's neck, quickly taking over and mutating its body.[6]
Current Arc[]
After Zaybi teleported everyone away from the Madalans and the Kaiju, they arrived in the land of the lawless, which was already infected with parasites. A member of the lawless suddenly began attacking another lawless before the parasite emerged from the man's body, taking control and ripping one of the lawless to shreds. The parasite was quickly burned alive by the other lawless humans.
When the Madalans were reviewing the threats of the new enemies on their mothership, the Parasites were mentioned as one of the new organisms that had appeared. The Madalans dismissed them as an enemy due to the parasites' inability to infiltrate their bodies.[3]
