Natural Enemy

Natural enemies ( (てん) (てき) Tenteki?), alternatively known as Predators, are the enemies of humanity in their respective worlds who make up the main antagonists of Versus.

Overview[]

"Natural enemy" as a term refers to the absolute predator of a world. Like how birds prey on insects or snakes prey on frogs, natural enemies prey on the human race. With these nigh insurmountable dynamics in play, the extremely harsh odds for victory leads to the crux of the plot of Versus. With each world attempting to have another hopefully give aid at the same time through various means, all thirteen worlds, in dire straits, coalesced into one.

It was then discovered that natural enemies are potentially susceptible to the natural enemies of foreign worlds due to sheer unfamiliarity. This is not guaranteed to be effective however; these gaps in knowledge can be compensated for with adaptation or by simply being more capable in general. Depending on the goals and interests in question, different kinds of natural enemies could also begin strife with each other, although the outcomes of such battles are unknown.

List of Natural Enemies[]

In each of the thirteen worlds is an entity that threaten humanity's existence.

Demons[]

Native to Sorcerion, the Demons ( () (ぞく) Mazoku?) are the first type of natural enemy introduced. Having assailed the local humankind for generations, almost all of the world had been conquered by the Great Demon King Army, with the 47 Demon Lords controlling select areas across the globe under the rule of the Great Demon King. With an aquatic motif tying together the number of races united under one banner, most Demons hunt their prey using the "scent of blood", although the adept can also pinpoint magic. Through the strength of the leading class and an unending number of subordinates, the Demons' infernal subjugation has gotten to the point where humanity's prospects of survival has been compared to "a single candle flame amidst gusts of wind"[1]

In regards to potential conflict with other natural enemies, Demons so far have displayed a undisturbed attitude as long as their goals are not interfered with, exemplified by their Lords' casual assessment of the transformation the environment has undergone. A mindset that could change once the situation has been observed more thoroughly and other predators comparable in strength to the Great Demon King Army has registered, but only a smattering of this implication has reached them. In other words, any hasty aggression on their part seems to be unlikely against those who do not resemble humans. This grace period naturally meets a violent end as soon as an offending party dares to challenge them.

There seem to be a variety of malefic and hostile wild beasts that live within the same tainted regions that harbor Demons, but it remains unclear if they belong to the same category. Regardless, these creatures do not come off as threatening as those in positions of power, nor gather in numbers as great as the more common members of the army.

Robots[]

The Robots (ロボット Robotto?), the second type of natural enemy introduced, are the natural enemies originating from the Mecha Ordinance. Originally created by the humans of their world, they are composed entirely of inorganic material. Due to the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, they became berserk and went on to pursue humanity's extinction as a repercussion, multiplying without limit and conquering 80% of their world with constantly updating tactics and models. As of the present, their standard armor renders even the special heat and kinetic based weaponry wielded by the local resistance ineffective.

Robots primarily align only with themselves, attacking any animate being with an energy source without discrimination. Being able to detect the amount of energy their targets emit, they choose the ones with the highest amount to prioritize. This means that the robots fight against both inhabitants and natural enemies of other worlds as a matter of course, making them especially prone to conflict. On the other hand, if one does not possess a distinguishable source of energy, they could hypothetically be left alone.

Parasites[]

The Parasites (パラサイト Parasaito?) originating from Parasitica have managed to take over the majority of humanity, turning them into puppets. They can assume control of the brain without any indication, and leave bulbous masses growing out of both people and inanimate objects, presumably as an extension of their biology.

They are also fully capable of controlling species outside of humanity. The fallout of the 13 worlds merging allowed the parasites to infect other races such as a Titan.

Titans[]

The Titans ( (きょ) (じん) (ぞく) Kyojinzoku?) who reign over the Titan's Crown have enslaved most humans. Having a natural advantage in both size and strength, they are quick to attack anyone that shows hostility, as well as feast on humans. However, the capture of docile humans for slave labor on a whim is also possible. For them, humans are nothing but mere toys, food and garbage, which they dispose at will. Titans are violent by nature, even in their calm state.

Titans are highly territorial, attacking any other natural enemy that treads on their turf while leaving behind their mountains of corpses to scare them off. To expand titans' territory further, they spread their destruction and these structures in all directions. Upon facing other creatures, especially other natural enemies that can kill them, they recognize them as enemies and go all out to massacre them.

Kaiju[]

The Kaiju ( (だい) (かい) (じゅう) Dai kaijū?) are enormous monsters from the Disastrous Metropolis that have destroyed cities and countries and led to the governments giving up. Each one is reportedly at least 500 meters tall.

So far, the Kaiju has not shown signs of actively seeking fights with other natural enemies, but can still cause damage just by walking.

Madalans[]

The Madalans (マダラー (せい) (じん) Madarā seijin?) are a race of aliens emerged from space to invade Celestia many decades ago. They monitor Earth’s orbit for signs of humanity’s defensive satellite activity, destroying the weapons & arriving at the targeted locations. Additionally, the Madalans have various spacecraft at their disposal, from small spherical pods to colossal warships.

The Madalans take pride in their superior "compressed information" bodies and consider other races as inferior amoebas. Because of this, they will brutally hunt down any being, such as demons and humans, alike. However, when faced with an obstacle they cannot defeat through their ordinary means, they will gather information and retreat for a future encounter.

Nature[]

The Nature ( (だい) () (ぜん) Daishizen?) contains lifeforms belonging to Gaia's Wrath that have undergone excessive evolution and have overtaken the dwellings of humanity. From plants to mammals to insects, it seems this sweeping change towards size and lethality has been indiscriminate, with each being of notable threat.

Neo-Humans[]

The Neo-Humans ( (しん) (じん) (るい) Shinjinrui?) are a strange race of humans with advanced physical and mental capabilities originating from Neo-Terra who are attempting rule over old humans. In contrast to their distinct fashion senses, the New Humans are perfectly in sync, with each and every civilian equally capable of using a knife to great effect alone or in a collaborative effort. This unison extends to their personalities to the point that any of them can act as a voice for the collective opinion. Having a hobby of giving hope and then denying it to their perceived inferiors for the sake of sadism, attempted invasion is treated as mostly unworthy of notice despite the potential casualties.

They hold a severe lack of empathy and detachment to emotions other than their cruelty to the 'old humanity' whilst seeing the other races and species as simply new toys, despite the evident destructive nature and unstudied power said races can possess. The Neo-Humans unanimously agree that even something comparable to a natural disaster is of no issue when dealt to them as long as the losses are kept within a certain range.

God[]

God ( (かみ) Kami?) originating from Indignia has manifested from humanity's faith. Assumed to always be watching, errant comments made in opposition are feared for their ability to draw its wrath.

Curse[]

The Curse ( (のろ) Noroi?), which plagues the Cursed Lands, causes it to become cold and rotten along with polluting it's oceans. It can also infect individual life as something with a resemblance to illness with no known cure.

Game[]

The Game (ゲーム Gēmu?) that has it's humanity convinced it makes up everything in Extremia.

The Lawless[]

The Lawless ( () (ほう) (もの) Muhoumono?) is an alliance of human bandits and gangs originating from the Land of the Lawless and roam the surface doing what they please. Despite being humans, they are deprived of morals and have no qualms raiding bases of other humans. Anyone not belonging to any of their gangs is subject to torture for information and complete confiscation of all valuable items. They equip themselves with leftovers weapons after the war and whatever they steal from other worlds. The only known gang in the Lawless so far is Kyokai.

World Tree[]

The World Tree ( () (かい) (じゅ) Sekaiju?), which has taken root in Yggdrasion, is sucking up the planet's life, leaving it parched and withered. The roots seem to be spreading in real time across a continent at least, shifting significant amounts of land in the process.
