Overview

Panepane (パネパネ Panepane?) is Hallow's support fairy and one of the main characters in Versus.

Appearance[]

Panepane is an odd-looking fairy. His main distinguishing features are that he has a body of a baby with hairy legs, a pig's nose, and two antennae atop his head. Panepane also has hooves for feet and a protruding belly button. The only thing he wears is white briefs.

Personality[]

Panepane's personality can be easily described through both cowardice and loyalty. While he seems to be a coward who does not want to get involved in any fights, he also follows Hallow in his endeavors, even if they might seem suicidal, showing high loyalty for the hero.

Plot[]

Background[]

At some point, Panepane entered training school and met Zaybi and Hallow, and became the support fairy of the latter.[1][2]

Introduction Arc[]

Panepane gives a bucket to Hallow after he is hyperventilating, but the latter refuses. Hallow explains he was hyperventilating because he felt the heaviness of the responsibility from the Heroes' mission to kill the Demon Lords. However, Panepane doubts Hallow's abilities and wonders if they will be fine, also saying he hadn't changed ever since he joined his party and he would rather be Bolst's support fairy. Ario disagrees with Panepane. The heroes march to their respective battles.[3]

Panepane tries to leave Hallow's Party behind

6 months in, Hallow's party arrive at the Demon Lord's castle, and a letter that smells of blood arrives. Panepane gives the letter to Hallow, and the rest of the party get desperate over the fall of many of the heroes. In seeing this, Panepane tries to head home, telling Hallow nobody is dumb enough to face a fight they know they will not win. Hallow then notices Ario went missing and says he agrees with Panepane. The fairy feels proud about this but the hero says he would be facing the demon alone, to Panepane's surprise. As Hallow's sword shines, the rest of the party except Panepane follows him. Panepane is about to leave but he's surprised by several demons, forcing him to tag along with the party.[4]

At the lord's room, Panepane witnesses as many of the party members die because of Jachi's dense magic. Panepane watches in horror as Hallow loses his arm and flies out of the castle, and follows his fall.[5]

Hallow wakes up and Panepane explains to him he was swept down the river and some folks happened to pass by and looked after him. Amongst these people there is Zaybi, who Panepane is proud to meet again since they were together at training school. When Zaybi mentions 'the other plan', Panepane asks about it but they witness together a giant storm forming, meaning several giant summonings were happening across the globe. Multiple demons fight them, but Panepane later smells an unknown scent coming from a gun-armed squad from another world. He is then amazed when Zaybi tells him about their 'plan' of summoning another world to help them defeat the Demons. However, they're met by otherworldly humans who had the exact same idea.[6]

Watching in disbelief, Panepane and Zaybi try to act like they misunderstood what just occurred. Later on, Keila explains to them about this phenomenon and Panepane asks her if they could not just use their weapons against their natural enemies, the robots, but Keila tells him it is no use. The robots in question come after them, and the gun-armed squad is unable to defend themselves, but Zaybi's mage squad defeat them instead with their magic. As Zaybi and Keila agree to an alliance, Panepane smells countless demons approaching them. A battle between natural enemies and humans begins, but it is interrupted by the robots who start attacking the demons, while the humans flee to the fort.[7]

Zaybi suggests going on a dangerous trip to rescue survivors, but Panepane says he wants to stay at the fort with Hallow. However, the latter begs Zaybi to let him go. The latter accepts, with the condition that Panepane comes with him to make sure Hallow does not do anything reckless. Panepane gets frustrated but accepts.[8]

Ten minutes later, Hallow, Keila, Zaybi, Panepane and the remaining survivors of Keila's squad teleport to a place that used to be a forest, now a mixed-up place. After the group sees a walking 'mountain', a terrified Panepane begs them to go back, but Hallow spots a survivor. However, Panepane notes that it is way too big to be a normal human, and it is a titan instead. Zaybi uses magic to distract it and they run towards the teleportation circle, but they are in a dead end. Meanwhile, Panepane tells them to hurry as the titan is catching up. When they get to the teleportation circle, Panepane feels tired and cannot continue, but one of the survivors spots more in the distance. As he sees Hallow, Zaybi and Keila rushing to save the other survivors, he chooses to follow them.[9]

The group saves many more survivors as they fight many other natural enemies, and finally come back with twelve survivors from across different worlds. Zaybi watches in concern as the king falls ill to a mysterious disease carried from another world, which prompts Panepane to get desperate too.[10]

Titans vs The Neo-Humans Arc[]

After Kira returns from the battle to report the result, Panepane translates Kira's words to human language, noting that the mission to divert the Titans was a success, however most of the squad died except Ario, who was captured instead.[11]

Demons vs Aliens Arc[]

During the Demons' invasion, Panepane stays in the fortress to take care of Kira by giving it water and chocolate, which unfortunately has melted. He then notices a suspicious smell and flies out to Hallow's location to warn him of a deadly threat.[12][13] Panepane then follows Hallow as the latter saves Gyuta and laments their current dilemma. As Kira approaches and offers to sacrifice itself to restore Gyuta's energy, Panepane tries to convince Kira against it, to no avail.[14]

After the human survivors successfully escape using the Grand Teleportation Magic Circle, Panepane is overwhelmed with panic, realizing he and Hallow have been left behind due to the alien forces. While Hallow takes solace in the fact that the others made it to safety, Panepane angrily lashes out, despairing over their dire situation, now stranded in a hellish battlefield surrounded by enemies.

This is interrupted by the arrival of Pakkya, who nonchalantly notes their failed escape. Soon, Pakkya and Hallow intervenes to save Bastz from two attacking demons. Using a Soul Container, Bastz steals the soul of a barely alive demon, transforming the artifact into a makeshift vehicle for their escape.

The group sets off in the vehicle, but their brief reprieve is disrupted when it suddenly begins to tip dangerously. Pakkya acts quickly to stabilize it, narrowly avoiding disaster. Confused and alarmed, Panepane spots the source of the trouble: the demon Kiva has landed on their vehicle. In a decisive move, Pakkya swiftly kicks Kiva off, and the group continues their journey away from the battlefield.[15]

Their relief is short-lived. After traveling some distance, the vehicle abruptly sputters to a halt. Bastz announces they are out of fuel, and Panepane's panic returns. Soon, the mega kaiju Daikokuzan shifts its gaze toward them from afar. Panepane screams for everyone to run.[16]

Demon Lord Arc[]

Later, Panepane, Hallow, Pakkya, and Bastz rest in a hollowed-out tree deep within a giant forest. During their brief respite, Panepane suggests seeking out other heroes, an idea Hallow readily supports. Pakkya proposes they search for Gigatila, the greatest warrior from his world, to which Hallow agrees.[17]

As they venture through the sprawling Verdant Forest, they witness giant animals effortlessly overpowering robots, demons, and titans alike. Panepane grows increasingly anxious, lamenting that the forest reeks of danger, making it impossible to trust his nose to guide them out. When they sense something massive approaching, Panepane frantically urges them to find cover immediately.

They suddenly encounter Nukizumi, a young boy who offers to guide them through a network of underground tunnels to his old, abandoned subterranean village. Panepane voices his concerns, insisting they need to move since the forest is too perilous — even the ants are capable of devouring demons.[18] Soon, Shirokaki kicks them out. They follow Nukizumi once again, this time flying on Chicchi's back toward Spiral Mountain, their next destination.[19]
