- February 15: It is reported that Taito became a third-party publisher for the Famicom.[1]
- April: Sunsoft becomes a third-party publisher for the Famicom.[2]
- April 22: Konami becomes a third-party publisher for the Famicom.[3]
- June: Irem becomes a third-party publisher for the Famicom.[4]
- June 21: A Famicom version of Spartan X developed by Nintendo is released. Nintendo gained the rights to develop this version from Irem.
- July 15: Enix becomes a third-party publisher for the Famicom.
- September 13: Super Mario Bros. releases for the Famicom.
- October 18: The Famicom releases in North America being renamed as the Nintendo Entertainment System; along with Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, 10-Yard Fight, Baseball, Clu Clu Land, Excitebike, Golf, Gyromite, Hogan's Alley, Ice Climber, Kung Fu, Pinball, Soccer, Stack-Up, Tennis, Wild Gunman, & Wrecking Crew.[5] The sales of Super Mario Bros. would increase greatly due to it being bundled with the console.
- Fall: Nintendo stops shipping arcade games in Japan[6] to focus more on the Famicom.[7]
- December 11: Capcom becomes a third-party publisher for the Famicom.
- December 19: Square becomes a third-party publisher for the Famicom.
