Donkey Kong Jr. Math (JP) is an educational platform game developed and published by Nintendo for the NES. In this game, players control Donkey Kong Jr. as he solves math problems set up by Donkey Kong. It was released for the Family Computer Disk System on December 12, 1983, and for the NES on October 18, 1985 for NTSC regions and on July 10, 1986 for PAL regions.

The game was re-released in other forms, such as being a furniture item in the 2002 Nintendo GameCube video game Animal Crossing. It was also released for Wii and Wii U Virtual Console in 2007 and 2014 respectively, and on the Nintendo Switch Online service on July 4, 2024.[1]

Donkey Kong Jr. Math is the only game in the Education Series of NES games in North America. Upon release, the game was a critical and commercial failure.

Gameplay[]

The math problems that you'll be required to solve are very basic. There are no division problems, but instead, you'll have to determine the answers of addition, subtraction, and multiplication questions that, likewise, are also simple. Donkey Kong Sr. would hold up a sign saying "SELECT", then the player would select the version.

In the two-player version, the players compete to see who will solve the problem the fastest. The loser would have the same losing action as in Donkey Kong Jr., with the flailing arms and bulging eyes, then the winner would be shown standing next to Donkey Kong Sr. while a heart appeared.

In the one-player version, the player would be made to solve problems. Getting too many problems wrong would cause the player to lose a life.

The only other way to lose in either the one-player or two-player version, was if the player fell into the water.

Development[]

Reception[]

The game received negative reviews. As a result, sales were very poor, and Nintendo considered it the worst game in their first launch lineup for the NES. It was also the only game in the first-run line's "Educational Series." The game's lack of sales was the likely factor that Nintendo declared the Education Series a discontinued operation. However, the game was re-released in 2008 for the Wii Virtual Console and in 2024 for Nintendo Switch Online, and was among the games included in Animal Crossing. It was also given an indirect reference in the eponymous main character's trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

The game was uploaded to the Nintendo Switch Online on 4 July 2024.[2]
