I actually watched this a few days ago but I didn’t get a chance to write a review.
I think it’s safe to say this is my favorite movie. I was in tears all throughout this viewing. That may have been partly due to the fact that I was high, but regardless I specifically chose to watch it because it is my ultimate feel good movie and obviously it did not disappoint.
I found myself specifically drawn to the voice acting in this viewing. Literally every casting choice is phenomenal. Jake Johnson as a laid-back, lazy and kinda over it Spider-Man is the single greatest casting choice of all time. That’s definitely not true but its one of the best things to ever happen to me. Kathryn Hahn as Doc Ock was also super awesome. My Marvel knowledge doesn’t extend very far past the movies so I didn’t even know there were iterations of Doctor Octavius as a woman, which made for a great surprise. Lili Tomlin as Aunt May was also wonderful. And Nic Cage and John Mulaney were obviously great choices too. The voice acting just really fills out the film’s personality, which is already primarily established by its ground-breaking visual style.
I don’t know if its because Miles is Puerto Rican and I’m Puerto Rican, or if its just the whole “anyone can wear the mask” theme that brings me to tears every time, but this film is just so beautiful and so much love clearly went into it and I’m literally tearing up as I’m typing this. God I’m such a nerd, thank you Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
