Rafael "Parker!!" Jovine’s review published on Letterboxd:
Despite all the negative reviews I read and listened to, I guess the completionist in me moved me to give it a watch nonetheless.
And to be honest, my mind was somewhere else during most of my watch, which I guess is very telling of the film, especially because I watched another film next and that had me invested. But yeah, as many have pointed out, instead of an original film, it all plays like a dumber and less interesting remake of the original. That one, at least, had some "originality," not so much in its premise, but in the characters themselves, the masks, and everything else. The sequel had some neat scenes, like the pool one and settings. But this one with the additions of the town’s people, I guess in many ways, also took a lot of the film and added to the "dumbness." I can see what the intention was behind this—maybe have us questioning who may be, etc.—but it seems by many reviews it had an opposite effect.
Other than that, performance wise, it was serviceable. Not terrible, but also they didn’t leave any last impression on me. The cinematography was pretty solid. Harlin uses some of his background as an action director to add a little bit of, well, action to the film with the explosions, etc. But between this and his Exorcist movie, I could be wrong, but maybe horror may not be his forte. At least it involves sharks.
All in all, not gonna lie, I may go back and watch the other films and hope they may get better but I will not put my eggs in that basket. But yeah, as for this, it’s hands down the weakest of the three we’ve gotten so far, the most underwhelming and clearly the one that gets people more angrier than scared.
