Haters gonna hate. I can’t wait to read reviews for Renny Harlin’s The Strangers: Chapter 1 to see why we dislike this so much. Despite some seriously frustrating character choices, an incredible amount of tension and an ending that begs a continuation makes me excited for what’s to come.
If the reason for this ridiculous 2.3 rating is the stupidity of the characters, I’d buy it even if we don’t watch horror movies to see characters make wise decisions. Wise decisions mean the film is over so that doesn’t work with this genre. These people are ridiculous, especially Ryan (Froy Gutierrez) who has a damn shotgun for a significant portion of this film and still can’t get the upper hand. These people made me anxious but that was part of the sell.
Once this gets going, it’s gone for a good hour. There’s a ton of hiding, a ton of figures lurking in the background and Harlin gets what’s scary. In fact, the burlap sack wearing, Jason Voorhies circa Friday the 13th part 2 looking dude (Matus Lajcak) is scary as sh*t. Were he after me I’d be out. I’d argue that both Ryan and Maya (Madeleine Petsch) could take the other two though and completely screw up the opportunity.
I guess the ending is divisive? It was announced as a trilogy so no one should be surprised this ends on a cliffhanger. I’m legit dying to know where it goes from here as it can go a number of ways.
Petsch is a good cryer. She’s got a scene that kind of hit me.
Also points for the Nights in White Satin needledrop.
Not as hard hitting as the original but good. That’s right… GOOD!
