The Strangers: Chapter 1

The Strangers: Chapter 1

I originally wasn’t planning to see this but at the 11th hour decided to catch a random afternoon showing. However, due to the last minute nature of my decision, I ended up being 10 minutes late to the preshow which always irks me.

They showed a clip of people with masks on dancing to music from a live band. The coolest part of the preshow was their “Killer Masks from Horror’s Past” segment where they showed trailers for The Prowler (1981), Terror Train  (1980), The Town That Dreaded Sundown (1976), Friday the 13th Part 2, Torso (aka Carnal Violence) (1973), Slaughter High, Curtains (1983), Alice Sweet Alice (aka Holy Terror) surprisingly starring a young Brooke Shields, and Tourist Trap (1979). They ended with an old clip of a mask maker showing off different masks he had made that looked eerily similar to the ones used in this movie. They even ended with a brand new don’t talk or text clip saying Alamo Drafthouse themselves would go to your house if you disturb people.

The primary reason this wasn’t originally a priority for me was because killer-type single location horror movies aren’t as up my wheelhouse as the supernatural-type horror movies. But I’m actually glad I saw this, a lot more entertaining than I was expecting.

The highlight of this for me was the tension. This had me on the edge of my seat. Nitpicking the script seems like a futile exercise for this genre so what moves the needle for me personally in these movies is the suspense &/or the jump scares. And this checked that huge box in a big way.

The Styx needle drop felt a little on the nose but the Nights in White Satin needle drop was just killer too.

Overall, not having seen any of these other movies combined with going into this having not seen any trailers, this was a pleasant surprise for me. I’ll definitely be checking out the next one if I can.
