anna nomaly’s review published on Letterboxd:
When Spectre came out, it took a lot of shit from a lot of people who only knew the Craig era and didn’t know what a bad Bond movie looked like. I suspect the same thing is happening with The Strangers: Chapter 1. It makes a little more sense in this case–the idea of garbage maestro Renny Harlin rebooting a relatively recent horror franchise is, admittedly, a risible one–but I still don’t buy it. While it’s not great cinema or anything, it’s a fun nuts-and-bolts slasher from a filmmaker who has a real eye for this stuff, and I’m truly excited to see where he’s taking it next. In the previous films, “The Strangers” had a pretty obvious double meaning. It referred to the killers, but it also referred first to a couple and then to a family, each defined by the fact that the love they once shared has been rendered into something unrecognizable. Further proving that this isn’t the beat-for-beat remake some would have you believe it to be, Chapter 1 is centered around a very loving, functional couple, so who are the other strangers? All I’m saying is that the current political climate has revealed plenty of people in this country to be Backwoods Backwards, and you don’t casually drop a face like Richard Brake’s into your movie without serious intent for the future. Evil to-be-continues tonight.
