Samuel Ribeiro’s review published on Letterboxd:
"Because you're here".
Again.
This first movie in the upcoming trilogy about the masked killers with no motive is unlikely to leave fans ansiously wishing for the remaining chapters.
Home invasion Horror is one of the most popular subgenres, because when done effectively it really creates discomfort, anxiety and tension, because it portrays something that can happen at any time, anywhere to anyone. Unfortunately, The Strangers - Chapter 1 rarely delivers any of those sensations.
The movie falls into a succession of clichés and predictable genre "tricks" and uses the 2008's formula a lot, a bit too much actually. And no, obvious copying movie references is not the best way to pay homage to, nor please the fans.
It's just lazy filmmaking.
In "addiction" to all that, the two leading protagonists have almost no chemistry as a couple, and to make matters worse, the man in particular barely has any capacity to give us something, anything from his character, he's very shallow and emotionless (maybe he should have worn the mask ...).
This film has, or had, one good thing there, right there, but it didn't take advantage, in any way: Richard Brake.
I'm sorry to say, but I'm afraid that when faced with this first one, those masked people won't even bother to show up for the remaining two, fearing they'll get bored.
