This was one of my most anticipated movies of the year, and it sure as hell didn't disappoint.
This movie is a very anxious ride through and through. Throughout this movie, I was reaching for a capsule of Sertraline over how on-edge the atmosphere is. That would be a result of Perkins' awesome directorial style and, more so, the cinematography. The cinematography is incredibly sharp here, with still shots with wide lenses being used the most. That use of a wide lens really added a layer of unease and made you question every shot that you saw, whether something was there or not. The use of colours is also interesting to note. Perkins chose to use very muted colours for this movie, except for the titular red colour. It adds a dash of realism to the film and a disturbing feel.
The plot here was slightly difficult to follow, as the story often introduces something that the audience isn't inherently familiar with; however, it comes back to it like 20 minutes later, making the audience go, ''Oh, so that's what they meant''. Pretty much the entire interrogation scene between Longlegs and Monroe's character is based on this principle.
Regarding the performances themselves, they were very enjoyable. Monroe really nailed the essence of a paranoid FBI worker, and Cage was just being Cage. I'm glad he got a role again where he can just act batshit crazy; it was a real treat to watch.
Definitely don't sleep on this one.
