Before we started watching this I barely remembered anything about it and this is my 3rd time seeing this. I forget how gorgeous this film looks. Watching this in 4k was definitely the right idea. I love that this film highlights more of the side characters that helped in the rebellion. Jyn is someone who doesn't want part in either the rebels nor the empire. Cassian has no other choice than to be devoted to the rebellion. Watching them build a stronger connection throughout the film is something so special. They finally have a mutual respect for each other as they embrace for the last time. I love the soundtrack for this film, obviously still having the classic Star Wars tones with new elements added. This has such an incredible cast. I love the subtle dark humor that everyone brings in this. This just makes me even more hyped to watch season 2 of Andor!

I love the cinematography that has a certain style from Leigh Whannell! This was a really fun horror movie to watch. I don't think the story was necessarily ground breaking but it was interesting. The acting wasn't the best I've ever seen and some of this movie for very repetitive. There were way too many scenes of them inside, and then they're outside, and then back inside, then back outside. It felt like they were trying to fill time.

Where do I even begin with this film? This starts off almost as a dream like sequence that you would have as a kid. There are so many bright colors and a whimsical tone to it. The editing and music deepens the childlike feel even further. The seven girls all have distinct personalities that coincide with their designated nicknames. When one of the girls invited herself and he group of friends to her aunts house to visit where her mother grew up things start to take a turn for the worse. This dreamlike cinematography now turned nightmare. Everything about this film to me is very much how I would remember nightmares as a kid. Things like a huge piano eating a girl, trying to pull up a watermelon from a well and it's someone's severed head. All these horrific things happening to these girls while still being somewhat silly. The only thing I knew about this film going into it is how weird it is and yeah it's pretty weird but that's what I really enjoyed about it. I really couldn't stop smiling and laughing while trying to keep up with the story at hand. There was something familiar about the way the film looked but to me it's very unique. Kung Fu has to be the coolest character I've ever seen. Everytime she did anything I was like okaaaay Kung Fu, get it girl!! 💅🏻

52 Directors Challenge

Week 3: Micheal Mann

Micheal Mann is an American film writer and director. Known for some of his films such as The Insider, Heat, Collateral and others. Mann's directorial debut was Thief (1981). At the age of 81 years old I think it's pretty amazing he is going to be directing Heat 2!

"I am a fiend for mojitos."

I was really hoping to like this film more since it has Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx but I am disappointed to say I did not like this film very much. I think the dialogue of this film does a huge disservice to both the main actors. I thought their performances both lacked. I didn't think anyone in this had great chemistry. When it is a conversation between Colin and Jamie's characters they don't even seem like they like each other and they are partners. I thought the camera work was not very good especially when it came to the zoom ins. The lighting of the film looked pretty bad. Some shots looked really beautiful and then it was cut to what looked like it was shot on a flip phone. There was a lot of thunder and lightning but no rain what's so ever. I didn't even know what was going on in the story it dragged so much and everyone was mumbling which made me really bored. I was getting whiplash from the soundtrack that went from club music, to divorced dad rock, to love makin music, and then back to club music for the first half of the film.

"To whom it may concern. See ya later :)"

I found this film to be so relatable with my siblings. Having each of us grow up and dealing with our own mental issues. Milo and Maggie reunite after an incident occurs with Milo. Maggie is just about to meet the same fate when she receives a phone call, stopping her. After not talking for 10 years it seems like not time has passed at all and they are back to joking with each other. My favorite scene is when they are at the dentist office together because to get to see how much fun they have together even doing the most mundane thing. Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader were actually surprisingly so good in a more serious role. I say surprisingly because I think I've only ever seen them in more comedic roles. Bill Hader should play more roles likes Milo. I think in a way they saved each other even if they didn't want to be saved.

"You were the chosen one! It was said you would destroy the Sith, not join them. You were to bring balance to the force, not leave it in the darkness."

When I compare this one to episode 1 and 2, I think this one has so much emotion to it, which is the underlying theme of the franchise. Learning to control your emotions is what makes you a Jedi but watching Anakin's descent into the dark side is led by his emotions. Watching Padme talk about her future with her baby just makes it even harder to watch knowing her fate in the end. Obi-Wan and Anakin's big battle at the end makes me so sad. Ewan McGregor's performance gives me goosebumps. You can really hear how upset he is during that scene. Ian McDiarmid's performance as Palpatine really shines in this one. There are a few scenes where Palpatine made me think he was faking a lot of things just to advance his manipulation tactics on Anakin. I'm sure I'm not the only one that believes the prophecy about Anakin being the chosen one is real. I know it can be seen as a failed instinct on Qui-Gon's part but I see it as Anakin bringing balance between good and evil. Obviously it can be interpreted in any way I think.

52 Week Challange

Week 2: Watch a film from the Discord Film Server Top Films (Collective)

I have been really interested in watching Ad Astra ever since I saw it was number 1 on Nightwing's Top 200 list!
There's something about space films that really speaks to me. I really enjoyed this and many other films set in space. This film looks so incredibly beautiful! Ad Astra has a very unique story to tell. Roy McBride is called to fullfil a top secret mission to deal with a phenomenon that almost gets him killed. Along the way he uncovers many layers of this mystery. When we see Roy in the beginning everyone brags that he can keep his heart rate steady no matter what he's going through. Obviously as he goes on it becomes increasingly tougher to keep steady. There are so many elements to his story that really moved me. When it comes to his relationship with his father, Roy keeps saying he doesn't want to be like him, but did he ever truly know the kind of man that his father was? Although there is a dark and lonely emptiness to space there is something so intimate about being there alone with someone else. Brad Pitt is so amazing in this. His character Roy is stone cold for almost the entire movie until the end when you see how much pain he's been shoving down since he was a kid. I think this is one of those movies that I will have to watch again to get a better understanding of it but I really enjoyed it.

I chose a film from her personal favorites list to watch for her birthday!

"You're like a baby that never gets tired of peek-a-boo."

I actually can't believe that I had never heard of this film before! I would say I am a big fan of rom-coms and once I saw it had Cillian Murphy and Lucy Liu on the poster I was immediately drawn in. Cillian Murphy plays a video store owner named Neil. Neil's girlfriend thinks he's immature for playing pranks and they end up breaking up. Neil meets Violet played by Lucy Liu who plays the wildest tricks on him. Even the moment we see them at dinner together she's nonchalantly unscrewing the salt and pepper shakers so that when the next person uses them they pop open and dump the contents out. Neil and Violet are so different from each other. I love that throughout the film Neil is trying to change himself to fit in better with what he thinks Violet wants. I think this rom-com is probably the best one for a cinephile because there are so many different movie references. I love the chemistry between Cillian Murphy and Lucy Liu! I really liked the different outfits Violet wears in the film. Her style is so unique and fun. Violet embodies the whole "healing your inner child" appeal to her that I really liked seeing. I am so happy I watched this, I really enjoyed it!

Week 2: Roman Polanski

I just want to get out of the way that I do not think Roman Polanski is a good person and should not be forgiven for what he has done, but with a film as incredible as this I felt it was best to separate the art from the artist.

"I know this isn't the best time to say this, but I wish I had gotten to know you more."

Adrian Brody has absolutely earned his Academy Award for best actor from this role. I think he gives the most complex, raw emotion I've ever seen.
Wladyslaw and his family are constantly being moved around into worse and worse conditions. During WWII, German soldiers treat Jewish people worse than animals. They make them dance, they beat them, starve them, and even kill them. This film really shows the horrific details of what happened to Jewish people during the 1940s. Wladyslaw has many things taken from him yet somehow there's a light at the end of the tunnel because many people help him throughout the film. It is a miracle that anyone survived all of that at all. The thing that kept Wladyslaw going was his passion for playing the piano. Many times even when there isn't a piano in sight he is playing the keys in his mind, remind him that someday he will be playing again for the Polish radio. Even after everything is taken from him he is still left with his memories. This film has left me with so many emotions and thoughts that I can't quite put into writing.

Tom Hanks Saturday

"You're looking for human error, so make it human."

I don't think I had heard about the true event in which this film is based on. While this film came out in 2016 the even happened back in 2009. I could not imagine the fear that was instilled in everyone during all of this happening. "Sully" and his copilot Jeff make a quick decision to land on the Hudson River after experiencing engine failure due to birds hitting it. During the film we see the pilots being interrogated and being told that the simulations showed that they could've landed on the runway. I thought that while the premise seemed kind of simple the execution was done so well. The acting performances from Tom Hanks and Aaron Eckhart were incredible. The way the plane crash was shot from inside made my stomach drop. Even though you know everyone survives before they show the crash I couldn't help but feel for everyone on that plane. Thinking of all the different outcomes and that landing in the freezing cold river was their best option was just so interesting. I highly recommend this!

I honestly was not really that hyped to see this film to begin with so I wouldn't say I was disappointed, I just didn't really enjoy this as much as I had hoped. The themes of age felt like it was shoved down your throat in the beginning, like oh I'm young and your super old. I thought Pamela Anderson, Kiernan Shipka, and Brenda Song were good. I really didn't like Jamie Lee Curtis in this that much. Dave Bautista was great, I think he added a lot of sadness and regret to the story. I felt like the story itself lacked substance. There was something I kept yearning for to happen but I left this feeling unsatisfied. I did enjoy the talk that Shelly had with Hannah when she told her to pursue a career she was passionate about and not just about picking one for money. I could see there were moments of regret that Shelly felt towards her career. The way this film was shot was slightly confusing to me, there were moments where I thought this film looked beautiful and then others where everyone was out of focus and blurry, not sure if that was intentional. I wouldn't say I would be in a huge rush to rewatch this.

The whole cast was great! General Jack Ripper goes completely insane and sends his bomber wing to destroy the U.S.S.R. He thinks the communists are conspiring to "pollute bodily fluids" of the American people. I found many scenes to be so funny even when I wasn't entirely sure what was even going on. The world building is still incredible and this one gives a new look into some of the politics. I do enjoy seeing all the new faces that add more depth to the previous film's backstory. Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor make such an amazing team and have great chemistry as master and apprentice. Seeing the age difference between Anikan and Padme is always a little jarring since he's like 8 or 9 when they meet. I think the CGI looks pretty good. I really love the details of each planet. I really enjoyed this film! I've actually been trying to get more into the western genre so I was excited that this got recommended to me! The plot isnt anything too far fetched but what I really liked about this film is how much personality shines through each character. Two brothers go around robbing small town banks, at the same time there are two cops trying to figure who's these men are. Chris Pine and Ben Foster pack so much emotion into their characters. Toby has a lot of compassion in his eyes while Tanner has a more unhinged look to him. There's obviously something Tanner enjoys about holding a gun to someone's head where Toby doesn't want anyone to get hurt. There were a few moments in this film that actually made me want to cry. Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham's characters have a weird relationship. Marcus just likes to poke fun at Alberto but he makes a comment about when he dies Alberto is going to look back at him poking fun and laugh about it. Throughout this whole film I just got a bad feeling about who was going to die and when. There was also a familiar feeling I got from some of the scenes that involved the locals in the diners. There is a scene with this older waitress and she's like "tell me what you don't want", something about that scene just reminded me of some diners we have in my town. I thought this film looked beautiful and was really entertaining!

52 Weeks Challenge

Week 1: Watch a film with someone who has passed away in 2024 in it.

Shannen Doherty who plays one of the Heathers passed away in 2024 due to breast cancer at the age of 53. I have been a huge fan of hers since my sister and I would watch Charmed together where Shannen played Prue. So in my eyes she will always be that character cemented in my mind. Rest In Peace Shannen Doherty.

"You inherit five million dollars the same day aliens land on Earth and say they're going to blow it up in two days. What do you do?"

What can I say? I love a dark comedy. The whole cast is incredible in this! Veronica has somehow ended up with the popular group who call themselves the Heathers because all 3 of them are named Heather. Veronica often writes in her diary deep dark thoughts of killing Heather. JD is the new student in school and immediately piques Veronica's interest. Together they cause complete chaos throughout the school. Of course one of them can't handle the guilt and wants to stop the torment while they're ahead. I love how dark this film actually is. It's something you really don't see coming if you don't know anything about this film. I've seen a few interviews Winona Ryder did where she talks about this film having an alternate ending and it really made want to watch this even more. The costume design is so beautiful, all of their outfits were so unique and fit each character's style. This film is a nod to what would happen if you let your dark intrusive thoughts take over.

The musical number they added to Jabba's palace goes stupid hard! I like seeing all of the different characters in the palace. There is so much personality they've given to each of these puppets. It's insane how many people it took just to control Jabba's puppet. While I do admire how much work went into him, he's still gross to look at. Of course the ending made me emotional. All that time Anakin could've spent with his children yet chose a path of fear and hate. Me when Luke convinced his dad not to be evil anymore.

It's my 80th birthday....

I really enjoyed this dark comedy. I did not know anything about this film going into it. This has such a beautiful soundtrack. Harold is a peculiar individual who's obsessed with faking suicide attempts which seems to leave his mother unfazed. Assuming he's attempted these hundreds of times by the way his mother reacts. Harold loves to go to funerals where he meets Maude. I think their dynamic is really interesting. Where Harold is surrounded by death and sadness, Maude surrounds herself with life. Maude also loves to create art, music, and life with plants. I have to admit I didn't see their relationship growing past a friendship but when we see him go on many other dates you never seen the true love he has for anyone besides Maude. This film speaks to me in a way that aligns with my own beliefs. I believe that people come into your life when you most need them whether you know why or not. I think they found each other at the exact moment they were supposed to. The ending was such an emotional twist that I wasn't expecting. I really enjoyed this film. This also gave me a similar vibe to The Holdovers and the show End of the Fucking World.

Shuffling my film recommended list and watching the first one that pops up!
Thank you so much Ethan for recommending this to me!! 🎉

Welcome to the 52 Director Challenge!
We (Dylan, Tom, and I) started this challenge to get more familiar with certain directors whether we've seen much of their filmography or not.

Week 1: James Cameron!
James Cameron began his directing career with a short film called Xenogenesis in 1978. Cameron went on to write and direct classics such as The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, Titanic, Avatar and some others. I think he has such a unique ability to shoot and direct water scenes. With such talent comes many risks when filming with actual water. Many articles discuss James Cameron near death experience while filming The Abyss. Many of the cast and crew were pushed to their limits and were at risk for hypothermia. The rat being shoved under water scene was real and began a massive controversy against this film.

"If you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks into you."

Special Edition
With the dangerous use of real water the film looks stunning. The pov shots through the person helmet looking out into the water makes you realize the harsh reality of being trapped that deep under the water. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio captivated me. The scene where Bud had to bring someone back to life was one of the most emotional scenes I've ever witnessed. My mouth was open for that entire sequence wondering if that person was going to come back. This film has so many anxiety inducing scenes! This film further solidifies my fear of the deep ocean. If I can't see the bottom I will not be swimming out. I thought the alien part of this film was so weird but the colors they used to signify their existence was done so beautifully. I've never seen the theatrical version so I couldn't tell what was cut but I highly recommend watching the special edition because I really enjoyed this film.

"Motherhood is fucking brutal"

This was such a weird and beautiful film. I have always loved Amy Adams but this has added a whole new level of admiration for her. Seeing reviews for this made me not think I was going to like it but I performance Amy Adams gives really set the tone for this film. Part of yourself is taken away and put into a new human being and you are left with a new title: Mother. Now she is a stay at home mom trying to balance her passion for art and taking care of a baby. Angry at her husband for leaving her home, angry at herself for thinking she's a horrible mother, and angry at the fact that she doesn't know who she is anymore. The thing that makes her happy is letting go and being something that every woman has been told they can't be. Watching this film made me feel a sigh of relief. Finally watching this woman be silly and weird all while not caring what people think. I have never wanted to be a mother and I already have a huge respect to all mothers out there but I think this film does a great job at being relatable.

Tom Hanks Saturday
Cast Away is a reminder that life can drastically change in an instant. Thinking back on all the regret that can never be altered. Tom Hanks commitment to his role is undoubtedly one of the craziest things I've ever heard. During production they shot the beginning and then paused while he lost 50 lbs and grew his hair out! There is nothing more terrifying than a plane crash except maybe surviving it and being trapped on an island alone for a long time. Learning how to survive we see him get more crafty with his skills. In the beginning Chuck clumsily tries to catch a fish and fails, tries to make a fire but gives up, and try to open a coconut which takes him a few tries. It is so satisfying to see him finally make a fire and spear a fish without even hesitation. Those ice skates were puttin in the work. Of course he makes friends with a volleyball named Wilson. The amount of times my parents scream WILSOOOON growing up still makes me giggle. I can't imagine what it must've been like getting back to society. No matter how many people he was around he must've felt isolated still, having no one that understands what he went through. This is an absolute classic to me.

I love you

I know

There are so many things I love about this film. We see Luke Skywalker battling the duality of forces. Obi Wan wants him to train with Yoda to be a Jedi whereas Darth Vader wants him to join the dark side. The introduction of Yoda is so funny to me because he is just acting like a silly little rascal. Yoda teaches Luke to forget everything he knows and do instead of try. I love seeing more of Darth Vader's design especially with the sphere he sits in. Leia and Han's relationship blossoms just as he is taken away and frozen in carbon. There is also the introduction to one of my favorite characters Lando Calrissian! That man is head to toe dripping in style and confidence. The ship that Luke and Vader fight on has such an complex style. I love the humming and beeping sounds as he walks through the hallways.

My first Park Chan-Wook film! I was not ready for this mentally. I have to say what a strange yet intriguing introduction to his filmography this is for me. There are so many aspects to this film that I am so blown away by. The soundtrack filled me with curiosity yet the gruesome mortality filled me with fear. Many times in this film I covered my eyes because for once I couldn't handle the gore. It's films like these that make it conflicting on who to root for. I loved the cinematography and the editing of this so much. The lighting was so perfect, the scene near the end when he is staring at himself in the mirror was so beautiful. The way Dae-Su changed so much from being isolated from the world for 15 years was terrifying. Set on rage and vengeance he seeks out his captor. Dae-Su is willing to do anything to get answers for why he was kidnapped and locked up. Finding out the whole plot near the end actually shook me to the core. My whole sense of the film was rattled. Putting the pieces together as Lee Woo-jin is spelling them out for Dae-Su. This may be my first Park Chan-Wook but it certainly won't be my last. 🏃🏻🩸🔨🏃🏻

George Lucas is a master at creating the most unique world building I've ever seen. I have a newfound appreciation for the Star Wars franchise. I've only seen all of the once. The most unique thing to me about the Star Wars universe is how each individual has a name and usually a backstory I believe. Where most films don't even bother with small side characters. I think even if you aren't a fan of the franchise there is so much to admire about it. The practical effects alone are some of the most beautiful pieces I've ever seen. There are so many fun facts to look into about this film. There's the scene of Han Solo and Greedo, then there's the scene with Han Solo and Jabba The Hut. Both scenes have been changed in some way and make this watching experience so fascinating to learn about. I think the introduction to Luke Skywalker feels really natural. He's just a teen who is told that he's a farmer so that's all he wants to do. I think some times introductions to these "chosen one" characters feels unnatural in a sense of how can this nobody suddenly know how to save the world, (but I guess that might just be the force). The cast is incredible and everyone has great chemistry. Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher have secured a spot as the most iconic trio in history to me. R2D2 and C-3PO add just the right amount of silliness without being obnoxious or too cheesy. I may not be the number 1 Star Wars fan but I do have a big admiration for the famous franchise.

The idea of this film was definitely not how I envisioned. When I saw the trailer I assumed it would be that the man she has an affair with sought her out to destroy her but to me it fell flat. For this being an erotic thriller I found it less the desired. Romy's fantasy's we're not being fulfilled by her husband so she seeks out an affair with her intern Samuel. Samuel was not a very well thought out character in my mind. There we're hints of maybe mommy issues but to me his intentions with Romy were very unclear. I think he was very undeveloped and I think they should've done something more for him. I think this whole thing could've been resolved with a little communication. We see in the end what her husband is willing to do for her. Nicole Kidman is always a shining star in any role! I feel very conflicted about Harris Dickinson because so far the roles I've seen him in I've been slightly disappointed in them, not particularly fault. Antonio Banderas has aged like fine wine! His gives a very emotional performance but unfortunately I don't think he was really in the film enough. Overall I would say I was really looking forward to this film and has disappointed me.

Justin is dealing with many different aspects in his personal life that start to effect him as a Juror. Toni Collette and Chris Messina going head to head as lawyers was great to see. Their characters are so different that it makes it really fun to watch them go back and forth. This whole trial has everyone on edge and begging for it to end. I love the scenes with all 12 jurors communicating about whether James is guilty or innocent. I am glad that I read it though and I loved seeing the book come to life in the film. I think they did a great job with it. Griffin is just as sassy as he is the book. The effects looked great! This was the last Nicolas Cage film for the year! Next we're going into some of Tom Hank's filmography!

I really loved the plot when it was about Susan Orlean, I thought it was really entertaining and interesting. The story about the orchids was so beautiful. The Fall is such a beautiful film!
I watched this pretty recently but decided to pick it for FBF because I think this is such a beautiful film and I really wanted to know what Dylan and Tom would think of it since they had never seen it before.
Catinca Untaru is one of the cutest kids I've ever seen, it's hard not to find her charming and adorable. Lee Pace gives such an incredibly emotional performance. Throughout his story telling the harsh reality of his mental illness starts bleeding into his story telling. I only realized now on rewatch that the people in the story were the same people that you see in the hospital. I can proudly say that my rating has not changed and I still love this film. I highly recommend it to anyone!

By the 3rd Final Destination it solidifies the structure of having the premonition, saving everyone, then going through the kills in a certain order. With the next two films it does start to get a bit worn out but for now this one will always be my favorite. I would always skip the first two and watch this one when I was younger. There are so many iconic deaths. I love the use of the pictures for them to try and figure out how someone is going to die. This singlehandedly made me afraid of rollercoasters for the longest time. I've been in a tanning bed like twice and both times I started thinking about this movie and I would freak out and jump out of it (it's for the best). Mary Elizabeth Winstead is one of my favorite actresses so she really makes this movie better in my opinion. I do think there are a few plot holes but I don't really even think that hard about it so I still enjoy it.
