Can you close off your feelings so you don't get crippled by the moral ambiguity of your violent actions?!
Okay, here we go again trying to write my thoughts on this awesome movie. Thanks to Dan and JK for the good idea of writing this in a notepad and copying it and pasting it, I feel better about it already! 💗✌️ I'm not taking down my short rant from last night tho, I'm still kind of mad and, honestly, after having a good night's sleep, reading it it's pretty funny lmao
Oh, did I mention I freaking love Into the Spider-Verse? 😂 I was surprised by how much I got into it during this rewatch, I watched it once before and while I really liked it, I didn't connect with it the way I did last night.
I ADORE Miles and his story. His personality and his story make him an awesome Spider-Man, but he's also so different, and has such a different past from the Spider-Man we know the most (Peter), that he's also, very much his own person, his own hero, and seeing him discover that himself, while finding himself, was beautiful!
Miles, and the rest of New York, love and idolize Spider-Man. The only person that doesn't seem to like The Friendly Neighborhood superhero is Miles' own dad, a cop who sees Spidey as a vigilante. So when Miles seems himself bitten by a genetically mutated spider and gains powers, and immediately after sees himself burdened with a huge responsibility on his shoulder than only Spider-Man can bear, he needs, all by himself, to ask himself, is he good enough to be Spider-Man? What does it even mean to be Spider-Man, to be a hero?
The multidimensional story brings a whole bunch of Spider...People? Spider-Things?, from different dimensions, and the insecure Miles seems himself immediately attached to them, the only people who know exactly what he's going through, and the only ones he can talk to. He especially latches on to Peter B, an older, depressed and pretty jaded version of Spidey that reluctantly agrees to teach him how to be Spider-Man. Their relationship was super heartwarming and incredibly funny. Their personalities were a great match, and Miles acting like, well, a kid, trying to mimic what Peter B. was doing, while Peter overcomes his own self doubts and insecurities because of the way he bonds with Miles, was cute as heck and heartwarming to watch. Miles also bonds with Gwen, Spider-Woman, and seeing the sparks fly between them while they both deal with it as the awkwards teenagers they are, was so adorable I was grinning from ear to ear like an idiot whenever they were together. The other members of the Spider Gang: Peni, Spider-Noir and Spider-Ham, had smaller roles, but they were all so incredibly unique and lovable in their own ways. Spider-Noir especially, voiced by the awesome Nic Cage, had me in stitches every time, I kind of want a movie of him. Like seriosuly Sony, you make Morbius movies and whatever else while you have this gold mine right here? WHERE'S THE SPIDER-NOIR MOVIE??? 😂
But as much guidance as Peter B. can be to Miles, it's up to Miles to realize what he needs to do to be a hero. The problem is, he hasn't found himself yet. He's an insecure teenager trying to find a place in the world, and struggling with it. He doesn't feel at home at his new, super smartsy school when he himself is a very artistic person, he doesn't connect with his strict dad who is so worried about helping Miles succeed he forgets to let him be himself and becomes kind of controlling, and again, he's just an insecure kid. He doesn't realize he is enough. The only thing he needs to do to be Spider-Man, to be a hero, is to take a leap of faith, having faith on himself and believing in himself. This film has such a beautiful message of how everyone can be a hero, everyone can be Spider-Man, if we only try our best. It's a beautiful tribute to the character of Spider-Man. Also, this message, through Miles' own lovable, playful and sometimes shy personality and the beautiful, genuine, heartfelt relationships he has with his family, makes it impossible for me not to root for this adorable kid, and feel for him as the story gets more intense and emotional for him as it goes along. Also, my own mom also calls me "mamá" the way Miles' mom calls him "papá" sometimes, so that also melted my heart every time 🥰
The biggest reason for the story getting as intense as ig gets tho, are the villains. I honestly don't recall Spider-Man villains being as menacing and straight up terrifying as they are here! Their designs were really intimidating (Kingpin looked just inhuman), and their abilities were really powerful and had all the Spider Gang on the ropes constantly. The story also makes them an incredibly sinister and real threat from the start, with a shocking introduction that still had me reeling on this rewatch.
And like I said, the character designs were part of the reason the villains were so intimidating, but also cool looking. Because this whole movie is just GORGEOUS. The different blend of animation styles, the incredibly detailed, popping and vibrant locations with rich colors and lighting, and the stylish and artistic touches, from the animation to the effects, made the whole experience of watching this film so unique, and just a feast to the eyes! There are moments where the animation even becomes kind of jittery, and it felt like I was reading a comic book, with my eyes jumping from panel to panel. I could not get enough of every single frame in this movie, and as much as I love Miles and this story, the biggest reason I want to watch Across the Spider-Verse in theaters is to be able to see these amazing visuals in the biggest screen possible! 🤩
I adored Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse! It was such a beautiful story, Miles was an ADORABLE protagonist and a great Spider-Man, the otherworldy, multidimensional plot made it super unique for a Spider-Man movie, and so were the incredible visuals and the beautiful style of the film. Besides, the awesome voice acting from the whole cast, the inventive action scenes, the silly, self aware humor and the witty dialogue make it just a blast to watch. I can't wait for Across the Spider-Verse, I want to see Miles and Gwen again, in the big screen this time! 💖
Also, that post credits scene was freaking gold! I can't believe I had not seen it before, it was hilarious! "YOU HAVEN'T SEEN POINTING UNTIL I GET THROUGH WITH YOU!" 😂
