Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Although I have seen Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse a dozen times, and everyone has already pointed out what makes this film so special, I still wanted to give my two cents. While this may not be the best animated film of all time, it is by far the best looking animated film of all time in my opinion. Everything jumps off the screen at you and feels like a comic book has come to life. I love how the film adds in the sound effects of film to the screen, exactly like it is in the comics. These little attentions to detail are what elevate this above most films. The film's colors are vibrant and feel like they are something out of a psychedelic experience at times. Every single voice actor in the film is perfectly cast for their character. Their performances are boosted by the fact that every character in the film is given unique character traits and adequate screen time. Shameik Moore as Miles Morales is one of the best protagonist in any superhero film.
Miles goes through an emotional roller coaster of a journey, that, by the end of the film, has us, the audience, fully bought in on Miles taking that leap of faith. Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker cracks me up everytime I watch this film. His Peter consistently brings heart and laughs for the audience while also providing Miles the guidance he needs in his life in wake of the death of his universe's Spider-Man, and later the death of his Uncle Aaron. Brian Tyree Henry's Jefferson Davis, Hailee Steinfeld's Gwen Stacy, and John Mulaney's Spider-Ham are a few of the others doing standout voice work, but everyone is on their a game and fit in well with the film. A lot of people have a problem with the villain, Lie Schrieber's Kingpin. While kris backstory isn't given a lot of screen time, it is drawn out enough to understand where he is coming from and this film is doing so much that I think having a more bare bones villain is of benefit. Spider-Verse's script has so many touching moments, its unreal. So many emotional lines throughout the film that you are almost left in tears, such as the talk Miles’ dad gives him outside his dormroom or the leap of faith Peter B. Parker takes back to his universe. Going along with what I said about the characters in the film, a lot of the reason as to why all of the characters work is due to the script introducing everyone of importance in a concise manner that never misses a beat in its pacing When I was watching this with my girlfriend over the weekend, she said that she really enjoyed the film but thought that the action in the film wasn't very exciting and I couldn't disagree any more. The action is fast paced and again gives that feeling of a comic book or a sandbox of toys is leaping into life on the screen. The ending fight with the Kingpin, along with the other array of villains he's got working for him, is one of if not my favorite action scene in any comic book movie of all time. Never would I have thought that I would be seeing multiple Spider-Men take on basically his entire rogues gallery all in one movie, but this movie did it. I honestly Though it's not my favorite Spider-Man film, as Spider-Man 2 has such a nostgolic and special place in my heart that I don't think it can ever be topped, but this film came just about as close as you can get. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse truly understands the character of Spider-Man better any film before or after it, culminating perfectly into what is the best animated film since WALL-E for me.
