Most equipment, items, and customization options are available for purchase year-round. However, in some cases, usually in conjunction with Grand Galas, certain pieces of equipment, items, and customization options will be available only for a short period of time. During the 2014 Fall Festival, the staff introduced four categories of item availability — Always Available, Seasonal Edition, Limited Edition, and Retired — to help alleviate user confusion about whether or not a particular piece of equipment, quest, hatching potion, hairstyle, hair color, or skin would be available again in the future.
- Always Available: Once released, these items are expected to be permanently available for purchase.
- Seasonal Edition: When released, an availability window in announced via the news. Once that window closes these items will no longer be available, but the exact same item/deal may reappear later for another availability window.
- Limited Edition: When released, an availability window in announced via the news. Once that window closes it will no longer be available, and will never re-appear without either art changes or a significant price change.
- Retired: The item has been permanently retired. Similar items may be offered, but they will have visible differences in the art.
Always Available[]

Once released, these items are expected to be permanently available for purchase. |
The default status for items on Habitica is Always Available, so if the status of a new item isn't mentioned, it's safe to assume it's going to be available, unchanged, for the foreseeable future. Note that Always Available isn't the same as gold-purchasable -- there are things in other categories that can be bought with gold, and there are Always Available items that cost gems or mystic hourglasses.
Examples:
- All the starting equipment and customizations, all Enchanted Armoire equipment.
- All non-basic, non-animated backgrounds, most quests, the Rainbow skin and hair colors, and the Animal skin colors, ears, and tails.
- Everything in the Mysterious Time Travelers shop, including the three animated backgrounds and all Mystery Items older than the current month.
Seasonal Edition[]

When released, an availability window in announced via the news. Once that window closes these items will no longer be available, but the exact same item/deal may reappear later for another availability window. |
Although this category is called "seasonal", not everything in it is associated with one of the four seasonal grand galas. Some things (like quest bundles) don't even seem to have anything resembling a regular schedule! But unless they are Retired, which will always involve advance notice, they will always reappear eventually. When they do, they look and cost the same as they did before.
During their availability window, Seasonal Edition items that are in the Market or other mixed-purpose shop are specially marked with a purple clock to show that they don't have unlimited time. Ones in the Seasonal Shop are not marked this way because the entire shop is time-limited.
In addition to the purchasable Seasonal Edition items listed in the table below, some Seasonal Edition Items are released in specific sequences. See the Event Item Sequences page for more information.
Special Event Releases[]

There are a number of special days which Habitica celebrates by releasing relevant Seasonal Edition items for just a few days. All items are either free or can be purchased with small amounts of gold.
Some of the free items are part of Event Item Sequences, so the first year you are there for an event you'll get the first item in the sequence, and the second year you'll get the next one, etc.

Monthly Releases[]

Monthly releases are items which are generally released mid-month and available at least until the end of that month, though being released during a Grand Gala may extend the availability window to the end of the gala.
There are two types of Seasonal Edition items there are released in this fashion: potions and discounted quest bundles.
Magic Hatching Potions: Magic Hatching Potions can be combined with standard eggs to produce the usual nine pet types but in a wide variety of different colors and patterns. Since 2017, 2-3 seasonal edition Magic Hatching Potions have been available for purchase every month with only two exceptions: once in 2019 when the second hatching potion quest was revealed, and then again in 2020 when the first time traveler potion was revealed. However, due to the number of potions not all of them will make an appearance in any given year. See Magic Hatching Potions for more details.
Quest bundles: Quest bundles are a way to get the same quests for fewer gems. However, they are fairly unpredictable - even those which are consistent on which month they appear in may go years between appearances. See the [Bundles] page for more details.

Grand Gala Releases[]
Jump to: | Seasonal Edition (section top) • Special Event • Monthly • Grand Gala • Convention |
There are certain types of Seasonal Edition items that are only released during the four seasonal Grand Galas. They don't all appear on the starting day of the gala, but they stay until the end.
- Skin & Hair Colors: Each season has a set of hair and/or skin colors that gets re-released every year for the duration of the gala. They can be bought either individually or as a set from the Customize Avatar menu. Some of these skin and hair colors are very similar to the Retired ones released the first year - you can read more about it in the October 1, 2014 News.
- Transformation Items: Each season brings with it an item which you can use to temporarily transform your party members into flowers, starfish, ghosts, or snowpeople. Once they are purchased from the Seasonal Shop they can be used at any point during the year, so de-transformation can be gotten from your Rewards as soon as you have been transformed, year round.
- Seasonal Quests & Bundle: Egg Hunt only appears during the Spring Gala, and there are two Winter-themed quests as well. Be sure to consult the quest pages before buying any seasonal quest, because they don't follow the standard rules for number of eggs granted and needed! There is often a quest bundle that includes the two Winter quests, and there is an achievement associated with doing all three.
- Wacky Magic Hatching Potions & Quests: Past April Fools' pranks often re-appear in the form of a particular type of Magic Hatching Potions, called "Wacky". So far one can only be purchased directly, and two can be gotten through quests. Both the quests and the potions appear during Spring Fling, after April Fools' Day, and since they don't have Mount forms you only need 9 total, not the usual 18.
- Past Grand Gala Equipment Sets: Class Gear can be gotten during the Grand Galas from the Seasonal Shop. The first year, they is a Limited Edition gold-purchasable sets. However, if you don't purchase a set during that gala it will be available again the following year -- but it will now be Seasonal Edition, and will cost gems instead of gold.

In 2014, the Unconventional Armor set was released in connection with Habitica's first convention appearance. It has since been re-released each time Habitica has had a booth at a convention.

Limited Edition[]

When released, an availability window in announced via the news. Once that window closes it will no longer be available, and will never re-appear without either art changes or a significant price change. |
Limited Edition items or customizations are available for a short period of time only. After this time frame they will cease to be available, but depending on the type they may reappear as-is sometime later for another limited run, or they may reappear in a modified form, or they may become retired . What happens after they disappear depends on the type of item.
The most frequent type is Mystery Items, also known as subscriber gear. A set is released every month, and is available for free to all subscribers during that month. After the month is over it becomes Always Available in the Time Travelers Shop for the price of one Mystic Hourglass.
The most universally available type are the gold-purchasable class equipment sets released each Grand Gala. After the gala is over they become unavailable, but reappear a year later as gem-purchasable Seasonal Edition items.
The least common type is items crafted as rewards for participants in major events. Once the event ends these items are generally retired.

These items have been permanently retired. Similar items may be offered, but they will have visible differences in the art. |
There aren't many retired items in Habitica, and most of them come from the early days - 2013-2014, when the wrinkles were still being ironed out. Since that time period the only items to become retired has been the Kickstarter set from 2019, and the 10th Birthday Bash items.
Retired Skins & Hair[]
Jump to: | Retired (Section top) • Skin & Hair • GaymerX • Kickstarter • 10th Birthday Bash |
In the first year of Habitica's existence, three sets of seasonally-themed hair/skin colors were released. They were intended to be unique, but there was a lot of demand by people who missed the set, so as a compromise a similar set was released on October 1, 2014 and the idea of Seasonal Edition items was introduced, but those who got the initial set still have their unique items.
