This is a glossary of terms commonly used in Habitica. Press Ctrl+F or ⌘+F to search terms on this page. Click on a term to access more information about it.
These are abbreviations of commonly used phrases that are seen in the Tavern and Courtyard. A few examples are GTD: Getting Things Done and RNG: Random Number Generator.
A graphic representation of the player used in the game, found in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, sometimes called your "character". You can customize your avatar on the User tab.
Optional scenery that can be placed behind player avatars and are made by fellow Habiticans. They have no in-game effect and exist only for aesthetic value.
When you find all of one type of pet or mount, or all pets or mounts of a particular color. For example, "dragon bingo" is when you hatch a dragon pet of each color. Triad bingo (e.g., "dragon triad bingo") is when you have hatched all of one type or color of pet, have raised them all to mounts, and hatched all the pets once more.
Players experience Burnout when they no longer care about completing tasks, and the rewards and penalties in Habitica are no longer motivating. Burnout can occur when the game becomes too easy or too hard, when tasks become tedious, or when changes occur in the player's life.
Special items available for purchase in the Market on the website for 10 gold. Players can buy the item and send it to one of their party members or to themselves, obtaining a stackable achievement by doing so.
To invite into competition or stimulate activity with difficulties. You can issue private challenges for your party, or public ones for anyone on Habitica, and you may use gems as prizes for these challenges.
There is a small chance of getting a critical hit when checking off a task or using certain skills. A critical hit for a task increases gold and XP gained by 50% plus an additional 2% for every point of Strength the player has.
Users that have volunteered to help Habitica through its code, art, community, etc. and their contributions have been accepted and incorporated into Habitica. They have colored names based on their tiers.
A Habitica Forum (referred to as The Courtyard) that is located on the wiki. It allows users to hold discussions on a variety of topics. Unlike the Tavern, which resembles a chatroom without distinct topics, the forum is divided into specific categories according to their topics.
A term borrowed from Unix which indicates a timed, repeatable event. For Habitica players, it means the processing which takes place when players interact with the game for the first time after the start of a new day. The game takes several actions such as resetting Dailies, adjusting Habit values, regenerating Mana, expiring any buffs that are equipped, calculating damage to and from bosses, and calculating drop tallies for collection quests.
A user-defined time of day (using a 24-hour clock) at which one day ends and the next day begins in the player's Habitica world. The default day start is midnight in the player's time zone, based on the time registered by the player's computer; changing your Custom Day Start processes your Cron at the hour you specify instead of midnight.
Damage to a player generally refers to loss of health points. Damage done to a task (e.g. ticking off a Daily) increases its task value - the color moves from the red end of the spectrum towards the blue. Damage to a boss reduces its health (shortening its life) but does not reduce its strength: it can do as much damage with 1HP as it can with 100HP. See also Strength.
A type of drop; players have the option of hatching eggs using hatching potions in order to obtain pets. The type of potion used on the egg determines the color/theme of the pet.
A permanent reward that costs 100 GP each time to open. Note that this will open the Armoire and instantly get something out of it, with chances of getting either a piece of equipment, food, or hatching potion. New items are added monthly.
Taking game mechanics and game elements to help users solve non-game problems. These techniques leverage a person's natural desire to win as motivation.
Four seasonal events that happen yearly in Habitica around the solstices and equinoxes, during which the seasonal shop is open, and all the NPCs don their special costumes.
Removing all scheduled days of the week from a Daily for long-term tasks, practice, and headers.
Group
A collection of users who are connected by some shared activity, interest, or quality. Since the discontinuation of guilds in August 2023, Habitica has only offered one type of group: parties. The term "group" should not be confused with Group Plan, which is a paid enhancement that can be added to a group.
A paid upgrade that can be applied to any party) to allow tasks to be shared with the group. Payments are made monthly.
Guilds
Until August 2023, guilds were groups that allowed Habitica players to discuss similar interests and participate in group challenges. They no longer exist.
The name of an open-source habit building program that treats your life like a Role Playing Game. Habitica is also the name of the world where the game takes place, which has many places to explore and people to meet!
Forming new positive habits and breaking old negative habits through self-accountability. Habitica combines habit tracking and gamification to help you manage your habits.
The Hall of Contributors lists all users who have contributed their time and efforts to Habitica, whether by working on the code, sharing the site, editing the wiki, adding art assets, or making other contributions.
The Hall of Heroes honors those who have aided in the development of Habitica. Two halls listing these players' usernames and contributions have been implemented. These are the Hall of Contributors, which honors content contributors, and the Hall of Patrons, which honors financial supporters.
A type of drop that can be used to hatch pets when combined with an egg. The egg determines the type of pet that will hatch, and the potion determines its color or other physical attributes.
A class that Habiticans can select when they reach level 10. Their primary and secondary stats are Constitution and Intelligence. They can heal themselves and their party, and have high survivability.
Commonly used in the tavern chat to greet other Habiticans from all timezones, like "Good IATODH everyone!". The abbreviation stands for Insert Appropriate Time Of Day Here.
InHabitant
A name for a resident of Habitica. A more common term is Habitican.
Platform used by HabitRPG (old name for Habitica) to raise funds for full-time development on some core features, including the mobile apps and boss battles. All those who contributed to the Kickstarter are listed within the Habitica website in the Hall of Patrons, located within the Community column at the bottom of the website. They also gained a Backer achievement on their profile.
A measure of the player's progress: once the player gains a certain amount of Experience Points, they will level up. Some features of Habitica, like drops and skills, require a minimum level in order to be unlocked.
A class that Habiticans can select when they reach level 10. Their primary and secondary stats are Intelligence and Perception. They gain experience and mana faster than other classes.
Magic power used to cast spells which affect task values and gameplay to help with habit building. Mana regenerates 10 points every day or 10% of max MP, and 1 point or 1% of max MP for each accomplished To Do; whichever is higher.
Moderators are Habitica users, both staff and non-staff, that monitor the content and the conversations in the Tavern, answering questions and helping keep the Tavern safe and friendly for everyone. Moderators' names are colored purple with a crown icon (for staff) or in blue with a star icon (for non-staff moderators). The non-staff volunteer moderation team was dissolved in December 2022.
Stats-free costume items released within the first three days of every month. They are revealed to all users but only received by players who are subscribed during that month, can be found under Inventory > Items under the "Special" section.
A Mystic Hourglass is a special item given to subscribers who maintain a 3-month consecutive subscription. They can be used to summon the Time Travelers.
Abbreviation for Non-Player Characters - in Habitica they are fictional characters controlled by the computer (and they have the look of the top tier contributors of the Kickstarter campaign).
An item that resets the player's character to level one, while maintaining tasks, quests, and achievements. It is similar to the New Game+ option that appears in some video games.
Parties are groups of players who join together and track each other's statistics, complete quests together, share custom challenges and help each other's progression by motivating and using group spells.
A mechanic to improve productivity: every single non-grey Daily has to be checkmarked at the day's end. It provides a buff equals to level / 2 to all stats, capped at a buff of 50 points at level 100 and above. You will also get a stackable perfect day achievement.
Companions that you create to accompany you on your journey, with no in-game effects but full aesthetic value. See Pets for lists of all the pets you can create.
The term "Pomodoro" refers to a technique that uses a timer to separate work into fixed intervals separated by short breaks. Each work intervals (typically 25 minutes) is referred to as a Pomodoro after the tomato shaped timer originally used by their inventor, Francesco Cirillo.
Quests are long-term, in-game missions for parties. You can complete them as solo-missions if you are the only person in a party. There are two quest types, Boss Quests and Collection Quests. Quests can provide equipment and pet eggs when completed.
A class that Habiticans can select when they reach level 10. Rogues have an increased chance to find gold and drops. Their primary and secondary stats are Perception and Strength.
In Habitica, there's no defined score by which to judge progress. Players can gain levels and become "stronger" or measure progress based on task completion and other metrics.
An option under the Shops tab, and is run by the Seasonal Sorceress (Siena Leslie aka Lemoness). It is open only during Grand Galas, selling seasonal items such as seasonal gear from previous years, special quest scrolls, and special transformation items only available for purchase during that season.
In-game tab where you can change when your day starts, the language used, use Fix Character Values, and your display name and password. You also have the ability to reset or delete your account.
Prior to September 27, 2017, Silver was in-game currency earned by completing Habits, Dailies and To Do's. 100 silver = 1 gold. After that date, Silver was replaced by decimalized Gold.
Abilities allocated based on a player's class that can be purchased in the Skills action drawer for mana. They provide positive benefits to the player and/or party.
The staff members of Habitica can be distinguished from other contributors by their purple player tier titles in Tavern Chat, the Hall of Heroes, and elsewhere on the site.
