When players fail to complete Dailies, fall into bad Habits, or take damage from a Quest Boss, they will lose Health Points (HP). If they run out of Health (are at 0 HP or below), they "die".
Effects of Death[]
When death occurs, you will see a popup message explaining that you have run out of health. You will then be revived with full HP, but you will lose the following:
- one Level, plus all Experience Points (XP) that had been accumulated toward the next Level
- one Allocated Stat Point from a random Stat (it will be regained when you regain the Level and can then be re-allocated to any Stat)
- all of your Gold Points (GP)
- one piece of Equipment, chosen at random (see below for details about the Equipment that can be lost)
There are no other effects of death.
Special Cases[]
- If you die while at Level 1, you will lose all your XP but will remain at Level 1. There is no Level 0.
- If you die while at Level 10 after you have chosen a class, you retain your chosen Class. When you reach Level 10 again, you will not be offered the choice of a different Class.
- If death causes you to drop below the Level at which you gained a Skill, you will lose that Skill until you regain the Level.
- If you die while affected by a buff, you keep the effects of the buff.
- If you have never allocated any Stat Points, you will not lose one when you die, but you also won't gain one when you level up.
Lost Equipment[]
The piece of Equipment that is lost upon death is always able to be repurchased with Gold (not Gems), regardless of whether or not the equipment was originally bought with Gems or is a limited-time item that is no longer available to new players.
You will not lose a piece of Equipment that belongs to a Class you are not currently playing. That is, you will not have to change your Class to buy back a lost item. However if you change to another Class before buying the lost item for your current class, then it will no longer be available to buy unless you change back to the Class where you lost the item.
Free equipment cannot be lost, since that would give an unfair advantage to subscribers who own many free Mystery Items.
Lost Equipment will be automatically pinned to your Rewards and can be re-purchased there or in the Market.
If the piece of Equipment that is lost is Class-specific, but not the Ultimate Gear, then it must be repurchased before better Equipment in that tier can be bought. However, this does not apply to seasonal items, but only class items, as seasonal gear does not require any sort of purchasing gear in a specified order.
If an item that is currently being worn is lost, then the piece of equipment will be lost, and no piece of equipment will replace it.
Reviving[]
After death, you can revive by clicking the button on the popup that notifies you that death occurred. Your health will then be restored to 50.
Sudden, Unexpected Death[]
If you died unexpectedly, here are some common explanations:
- You are in a Boss battle with other Party members, and one of the quest participants' missed Dailies dealt a large amount of damage to all quest participants. You can check this by looking at the latest messages in the Party's chat page.
- Your own Dailies caused more damage than expected. Powerful bosses can cause missed Dailies to deal several times as much damage as usual. Dailies that have turned red or been marked as Hard deal much more damage than Easy or blue Dailies.
- You clicked too many negative Habits.
- You are using a browser extension that monitors your browsing habits and subtracts Health for lingering on bad websites (e.g., the Chrome Extension).
- The Habitica website or mobile app failed to sync with the server, causing you to take damage for some of yesterday's Dailies even though you completed them. Look at your Dailies' Streaks; any Daily that doesn't show a Streak of at least 1 was treated as if it was missed. Refer to Sync Errors for ways to minimize sync errors.
If none of those apply, you may want to file a bug report by going to Help > Report a Bug on the website, or About/Support > Report a Bug on the apps.
Undoing Death[]
If you believe that your death was unfair in any way, you can restore your Level, Gold Points, and Experience Points using the Fix Character Values button in Settings. You can also add extra Gold to repurchase the Equipment you lost. There is no way to retrieve your exact former Gold and Experience values, unless you know them by memory. You will need to approximate them based on what you remember.
Examples of unjust deaths include:
- Sync errors that caused you to take damage from Dailies that you actually had completed, or that prevented you from Resting in the Inn.
- Bugs, such as Cron occurring at the wrong time.
- Medical or life emergencies or internet outages that prevented you from getting online.
- Accidentally clicking on a negative Habit.
- Boss damage caused by another quest participant for any of these reasons.
It's up to each player to decide what constitutes a fair death and to resist abusing the power of Fix Character Values.
Strategies for Staying Alive[]
Healing Options[]
- The main way to heal is to gain a Level, which restores all your Health Points (HP).
- You can purchase a Health Potion in the Rewards area for 25 GP. It immediately restores 15 HP. In most cases, this will cost less than dying!
- Healers can restore HP using the Skills Healing Light (for themselves) or Blessing (for the entire Party). It is completely possible for a player to be at 0 or less health, and have their health restored and be "revived" by a healers' blessing/s, as long as this happens before the "dead" player's Cron.
- You can purchase a Fortify Potion using Gems, which restores all of your HP (as well as providing other benefits).
Skills[]
Certain Classes possess Skills other than direct healing that can help mitigate damage.
- The Rogue Skill Stealth prevents damage from some or all missed Dailies.
- The Warrior Skill Brutal Smash reduces the redness of a non-Challenge Daily or Habit, reducing the damage taken from it.
- The Healer Skill Searing Brightness reduces the redness of all non-Challenge tasks, reducing the damage taken from them.
- The Healer Skill Protective Aura buffs Constitution, reducing damage taken by missed Dailies and negative Habits.
- The Warrior Skills Defensive Stance and Intimidating Gaze also buff Constitution but to a lesser extent.
- Mages and Rogues can obtain extra XP by using Burst of Flames and Backstab, respectively. This can help when close to leveling up, which will restore all HP.
Pause the Game[]
If you need to take a break (for example, during an illness or vacation), please refer to Resting in the Inn to learn about your options.
Build in Easy Points[]
Because you regain all health upon leveling up, adding easy Habits, Dailies, and To Do's can make the game easier. The extra XP increases your chance of leveling up before dying, and the extra Gold can be spent on Health Potions. For example, if you are very consistent about cleaning your home, you may not consider adding it as a task, but doing so would help you avoid death.
Unschedule Your Dailies[]
To use Dailies but not risk taking damage from them, convert them to Grey Dailies by editing their schedule settings so that they are never due. You will not lose HP on incomplete Dailies that are not due, however you can still check them off.
Become, or Party with, a Healer[]
The Healer's primary stat is Constitution, which reduces the damage taken by missed Dailies and negative Habits. Their Skills include solo and Party healing as well as a Party defense Buff.
A Healer may also be able to revive "dead" characters before death takes effect. For example, if a Healer sees that a Party member has 0 HP or less due to Boss damage that was applied while the player was away from Habitica (e.g., overnight), and if the Healer casts Blessing immediately, they may be able to increase the player's health to above zero before the player returns. That will prevent the player suffering the effects of death. (This is unofficially known as necromancy!)
Additional Strategies[]

Altering the Death Mechanic[]
If the threat of death does not make your tasks more fun or motivating, it can be reduced or removed. Some of the strategies above will help you do this. You can also set self-imposed rules that allow you to skirt some deaths, or partially restore your GP or Stats following a death. Beware - using these methods may also reduce motivation to keep up with good Habits or complete To Do's.
Immortality[]
Organize Habits and Dailies so that it is impossible to die:
- Use Grey Dailies as described above.
- Do not use negative Habits.
- Do not join Boss Quests as such quests would cause you to take damage from all quest participants' missed Dailies.
Optional Alterations[]
- Replace HP loss with GP loss by creating custom Rewards that correspond to bad Habits or missed Dailies. Use these fines as punishments to lose GP if a task is not completed instead of clicking a negative Habit or leaving a Daily incomplete.
- Make a rule that death costs a set amount of GP, rather than removing all GP. This is especially helpful if you are saving up for a long-term Reward and don't want one death to undo weeks or months of progress. Use Fix Character Values to restore the GP that shouldn't have been lost according to your rule.
- To ensure you always have the opportunity to purchase Health Potions before death, make all Dailies into Habits (click + if it was completed and - if not).
Past Version of the Death Mechanic[]
An earlier version of the Death Mechanic had the player being visited by the Grim Reaper of Habitica. The Grim Reaper has now retired.
