The Mage Masher in Final Fantasy IX.

A powerful sword once used for the persecution of mages.

The Mage Masher (メイジマッシャー, Meiji Masshā?), also known as the Mute Knife and Mage Slasher, is a recurring weapon in the Final Fantasy series. It is typically a dagger or short sword that inflicts the Silence status ailment as well as damaging the enemy.

Zidane Tribal from Final Fantasy IX has a version of this weapon that has become one of his signature weapons.

The Mage Masher was included in the Dawn of Souls and 20th Anniversary remake. It can be found in the lower levels of the Whisperwind Cove, and provides 20 Attack, 30 Accuracy, 25 Critical, and +5 Intelligence. It may also cast Silence when used as an item and can be used by all classes except White Mage and Monk and their upgrades.

Final Fantasy IV[]

Knife that sometimes silences enemy.

Description

The Mage Masher (Mute Knife in the original US release and Magic Sealing Knife in the Easy Type version) is a dagger found in the Sylph Cave. It deals quadruple damage when used against Mage-type enemies, and provides 35 Attack, 42 Accuracy, and +5 Intelligence, and inflicts Silence. This weapon is metallic.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years[]

The Mage Masher provides 35 Attack, 40% Accuracy, has a chance to inflict Silence, and is effective against mages. It can be equipped by Cecil, Ceodore, Kain, Edge, Rydia, Palom, Edward, Gekkou, Zangetsu, Izayoi, Tsukinowa, Harley, Golbez, Calca and Brina. It is found near the Tower of Trials in a chest in a secret section of the forest during The Crystals: Planet Eater tale.

Description

The Mage Masher is a dagger purchased in Jachol for 900 gil and stolen from Sorcerer. It has a 33% chance of inflicting Silence on the target every attack, and provides 28 Attack, 31 Accuracy, and 1 Magic.

Final Fantasy IX[]

The Mage Masher is a weapon for Zidane with 14 Attack and can inflict Silence when used with Add Status (20% chance). It teaches the abilities Flee and Detect and can be stolen from Baku (first fight), found in the Ice Cavern, and bought for 500 gil in Dali, Lindblum (disc 1/2), Treno, Black Mage Village (disc 2/3), Madain Sari, Daguerreo (disc 3), the Ipsen's Castle Mogshop, and the Bran Bal Mogshop.

It can be used to synthesize the Butterfly Sword, The Ogre and Exploda. It has come to be seen as Zidane's trademark weapon, with him wielding Mage Mashers in most of his other appearances.

Final Fantasy X[]

Tidus's sword is called Mage Masher if it has Silencestrike as its dominant ability, which can be customized by using Silence Grenade x20. A Mage Masher can be purchased for 120,375 gil at Mt. Gagazet after attaining control of the airship.

The Grendel, Malboro Menace, Jormungand, Don Tonberry, Catoblepas, Fenrir, Sleep Sprout, or Catastrophe may drop this weapon.

Kimahri's Mage Hunter and Rikku's Mage Husher are similar both in name and effect.

Final Fantasy XII[]

In the original version the Mage Masher is a dagger type weapon equipped with the Dagger 1 license for 15 LP. It can be bought in Rabanastre, Bhujerba, Nalbina, and the Barheim Passage for 700 gil, found in the Garamsythe Waterway (North Spur Sluiceway), the Barheim Passage (Op Sector 37), and the Ogir-Yensa Sandsea (Primary Tank Complex). It has a 15% chance to inflict Silence on hit. Mage Masher is among the slowest daggers, but it is still faster than all other types of weapons, apart from ninja swords.

In the Zodiac versions, it now provides 18 Attack, 5 Evade, 21 CT, 12% combo rate, has a 15% chance of inflicting Silence, and requires the Daggers 2 license for 20 LP. It can be bought in Rabanastre, Nalbina Fortress, and Barheim Passage for 640 gil, and found as a treasure in the Barheim Passage (Op Sector 37). It can be equipped by the Shikari job class.

Final Fantasy XV[]

Mage Mashers based on the Final Fantasy IX design were available as part of the pre-order bonus from Amazon, and are now available as a DLC item. They are daggers for Noctis and Ignis.

Final Fantasy Tactics[]

Created especially for the purpose of fighting mages, this knife has the power to silence its target.

Description

The Mage Masher is a fairly weak dagger with an Attack stat of only 4, but can occasionally induce the Silence status. It can be bought in Chapter 1 for 1,500 gil after the first battle with Milleuda Folles at the Brigands' Den, and stolen from Thief in the aforementioned battle. It can also be found as a rare treasure in Windmill Hut.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance[]

This sword was once used to hunt down rogue mages.

Description

The Mage Masher is a weapon for a Fencer. Rather than inflicting Silence, it teaches the skill Manastrike, which attacks MP rather than HP. It can be bought from Muscadet for 6,000 gil and from any other town for 6,800 gil.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift[]

The Mage Masher is a rapier for a Fencer, Red Mage, or Elementalist. It teaches Manastrike to to Fencers, Shell to Red Mages and Thunderous Roar to Elementalists. It can be bought for 1,200 gil in the shop after creating it in the Bazaar after using a Sanative Needle, Sturdy Bone, and Aqua Galac.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles[]

The Mage Masher is an artifact which increases the character's Strength by 1.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King[]

Mage Masher is a level 15 dagger that provides +14 Attack and is bought for 102 gil.

Dissidia Final Fantasy (2008)[]

The Mage Masher is a level 22 dagger that gives +17 attack and increases the EX Gauge by 15% at the start of battle. It can be obtained by trading 5,500 gil, a Dagger, a Resilience Shard, and Transmogridust x8, or acquired as a stage bonus in Destiny Odyssey IX by finishing a stage with six Destiny Points.

Zidane dual-wields the Final Fantasy IX version, and can combine them to create The Ogre when attacking. Despite being daggers, they are much longer; Zidane also wields them more as swords than daggers.

Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy[]

The Mage Masher is a level 1 weapon that increases ATK +20, DEF +2, and fills the player's EX bar by +5% at the start of a battle. Zidane continues to dual-wield two Mage Mashers in battle. It can be bought at most moogle shops for 200 KP.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius[]

Mage Masher is a Dagger obtained by crafting it using 300 gil, x8 Wind Crysts, x5 Wind Megacrysts, x3 Gaia's Tears, and x8 Iron Ores, and by finding it at Industrial City Dilmagia, Downtown Zoldaad, and during the Final Fantasy XII exploration event, Nam-Yensa Sandsea. It provides 38 ATK and has a 30% chance of inflicting Silence.

War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius[]

In Bravely Default, Mage Masher is a dagger that provides 5 P.ATK, 95 Aim, 3 Critical, and has a 25% chance to cause Silence. It can be found in the Ruins of Centro Keep (2F), or stolen from Merchantry Blade.

In Bravely Second: End Layer, Mage Masher is a dagger that provides 8 P.ATK, 95 Aim, 3 Critical, and deals 50% more damage to beasts. It can be found in the Eternian Central Command.
