Etymology[]
Sazareishi are boulders uniquely found in Japan, being formed of pebbles bonded through liquid limestone by the erosion of nearby mountains and able to flow into the mainland by streams. This phenomenon is alluded to in Japan's national anthem, Kimi Ga Yo. Its name may also take after tales of legendary warriors and their swords said to able to slice through boulders and stones without effort, such as Yagyu Munetoshi and Suzuki Magoichi.
The weapon's English name is named after Greek mythology. In Greek mythology, the Gorgon was a terrifying female creature who had hair of living, venomous snakes, and a horrifying visage that turned those who beheld it to stone, the most famous being Medusa.
