Mainframe is a character appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), voiced by American singer and actress Miley Cyrus. She made her debut in the 2017 film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, as a member of Stakar Ogord's team of Ravagers and a former teammate of Yondu Udonta.
Character description[]
Mainframe is an artificial intelligence that manifests as a robotic head. She is the leader of the Mainframe Ravager Clan, one of the many factions of the intergalactic criminals known as the Ravagers. She is also a member of Stakar Ogord's team, which consists of Aleta Ogord, Charlie-27, Krugarr, and Martinex. The team was once close friends with Yondu Udonta, but they had a falling out when Yondu broke the Ravager code by trafficking children.
In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Mainframe reunites with her old team after Yondu's funeral and expresses her sadness over his death. She decides to join them in going on heists together, as they did in the past. She also becomes part of the United Ravagers, a coalition of all the Ravager factions that honors Yondu's sacrifice and legacy.
Concept and creation[]
Mainframe is based on the comic book character of the same name, created by Jim Valentino and first appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy #5 (October 1990). In the comics, Mainframe is a future version of Vision, an android superhero and a member of the Avengers. Mainframe is the primary operating system of an entire planet in the 31st century and also guards Captain America's shield. He joins the original Guardians of the Galaxy and later becomes part of the Galactic Guardians.
Director James Gunn chose to cast Miley Cyrus as the voice of Mainframe after watching her on The Voice. He said: "I find her funny and likable and sweet. I liked that she cared about the contestants. So I was like, I think she would be a funny person to have as a voice." Cyrus recorded her lines in secret, and her name does not appear in the credits of the film. Gunn also revealed that he has plans for Mainframe to appear in future MCU films, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
