The power in the Marvel Universe is about to change forever. I'm the messiah. I...am...Marvel Jesus.
―Deadpool[src]

Deadpool (real name Wade Winston Wilson) is a character originating from Marvel Comics who is an anti-hero known for his ability to break the fourth wall.

He returns as the titular protagonist in the film Deadpool & Wolverine, set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, after appearing in the X-Men Cinematic Universe films X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Deadpool, and Deadpool 2. He is portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in all of the aforementioned appearance, who also plays Nicepool in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Deadpool was created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza.

Personality[]

Wade Winston Wilson is an extremely foul-mouthed, violent, belligerent, cocky, arrogant, somewhat narcissistic, and wise cracking anti-heroic individual and mercenary who is more than willing to shoot first, ask questions NEVER! However, beneath all of that is a man who genuinely wants to do good in the world and who deeply cares and is loyal to the ones who are closest to him.

As a former Special Forces Operative, Wade was described as a "Field Operations Dream" and by a commanding officer as an "Innocent Civilian's Nightmare" as his disregard for safety and rules constantly put his fellow operatives and innocent bystanders in harms way. This was one of the many factors that got him dishonorably discharged from the special forces and later encouraged him to become a mercenary.

Wade is also a near constant user of profanity. Virtually every sentence that comes out of his mouth is riddled with swear words. His sense of humor is also quite rude and often sadistic as he will not hesitate to point out a person's flaws or failings regardless of rudeness or consequence. This sense of humor has consistently gotten him in hot water numerous times and earned him the ire of his enemies and even his closest allies such as Wolverine or Cable.

Wade himself is quite aware of his extremely negative traits. As he himself states "I'm no hero! I'm a bad guy who gets paid to beat up worse guys." He said this in response to a young girl he took a job for called him her hero, with Wade rebuking the her as he strongly believes no young person should ever look up to a man like him. This reveals a deeply insecure side to Wade.

That being said however, Wade's better qualities were evident very early on. As a mercenary, Wade was described as warm blooded for one. Even after his experimentation that gave him his healing abilities and mutation in order to cure his cancer but also rendered him deformed were carried out, Wade still continued to do the right thing in saving his girlfriend, Vanessa, from the people who gave him his powers. He also displays a deep love and loyalty to his closet friends and allies, unhesitatingly refusing Paradox's proposal of him joining the Sacred Timeline at the cost of his home timeline and everyone else in it being destroyed. He has also displayed a sense of self sacrifice, not wanting anyone else to sacrifice themselves if he can do it.

Overall, Wade, or Deadpool, while having his unpleasant qualities, still has his pleasant qualities and wants to do and be good for the world and those he cares for, making him a true hero, or anti-hero depending upon who looks at it.

Background[]

Powers and abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Healing Factor: Deadpool possesses a superhuman healing factor that allows him to regenerate damaged or destroyed bodily tissue with far greater speed and efficiency than an ordinary human. Deadpool is able to heal from injuries such as slashes, puncture wounds, bullet wounds, beheading, and severe burns within moments. His healing factor can also work with significant successes that most superheroes with healing abilities would have difficulty with, including regrowing missing limbs and organs. His head or any other limb can be reattached using this ability but has to be placed in the proper place. Even after being beheaded, Deadpool can still move his body normally.
    • Foreign Chemical Resistance: Deadpool's body is highly resistant to most drugs and toxins.
    • Extended Longevity/Immortality: Deadpool's healing factor provides him with an extended lifespan by slowing the effects of the aging process to a long lifespan at an unknown degree.
  • Superhuman Strength: Deadpool possesses superhuman strength as he can lift humans above his head and send them flying through the air with one arm.
  • Superhuman Stamina: Deadpool has superhuman levels of stamina in all physical activities. He can physically exert himself at peak capacity for several days before boredom or stress takes over, and could have possibly gone on further.
  • Superhuman Agility: Deadpool's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels that are beyond the natural physical limits of even the finest human athlete.
  • Superhuman Reflexes: Deadpool's reflexes are similarly enhanced, superior to those of even the finest human athlete.
  • 4th Wall Awareness: Possibly as a result of his mental state, he is aware that he is a fictional character, as he broke the fourth wall to the point of it being a character trait.

Abilities[]

  • Master Hand-To-Hand Combatant/Martial Artist: Deadpool is an extraordinary hand-to-hand combatant and martial artist as he is a master in multiple unarmed combat techniques.
  • Master Assassin: He is a master of assassination techniques, espionage methods, covert operations, infiltration methods, escape artistry, marksmanship, and is highly skilled with many bladed weapons (frequently carrying two swords strapped to his back), and a number of other weapons including firearms.
  • Unpredictability: It is difficult for anyone to know what Deadpool will do at any given moment, given that he himself barely knows what he'll do at any given moment. This makes it difficult for most opponents to predict what he will do.

Appearances[]

X-Men film series[]

X-Men Origins: Wolverine[]

Wade Wilson is a mercenary working for Weapon X, under Col. William Stryker. He aids the raid on a Vietnamese village to obtain a meteorite made of Adamantium. He is quite the chatterbox, with Wolverine asking if he ever shut up. However, after Logan left, finally done with the brutality of his job, the entire team disbands.

Later, Wade was experimented on by Stryker, having Sabretooth hunt down mutants in order to splice him with their DNA and thus grant him their powers to use as his ultimate weapon. He also implanted adamantium katana blades into Wade's arms. He sealed Wade's mouth shut with skin graft to make him a "mutant killer". He is dubbed Weapon XI, although Stryker mentions him having "powers of dead mutants pooled together".

Weapon XI is unleashed to fight Wolverine, with Sabretooth assisting him. Using Cyclops' laser beams, Wolverine superheats his claws to decapitate Weapon XI, kicking his body of the cooling tower. However, thanks to his healing factor, Wade survived this, his body retrieving his head, his mouth no longer sealed. However, this was undone by the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Deadpool[]

In the rebooted timeline, Wade Wilson is a former special forces operative-turned-mercenary, his mutant powers dormant. He frequented Sister Margaret's School for Wayward Children, a bar for mercenaries, and befriended the owner Jack Hammer, nicknamed Weasel. One job specifically involved breaking into a rival's house, ordering a pizza, as the delivery boy was his target, as a favor for a girl he was stalking.

Wade later meets a prostitute named Vanessa Carlysle, instantly taking a liking to her thanks to her witty attitude, after paying for a night of skee ball at an arcade, he sleeps with her, thus they eventually become involved romantically. However, in 2016, Wade contracts terminal cancer, and is offered a chance at a cure by a shady businessman working for a subsidiary of Weapon X. He reluctantly abandons Vanessa to take up the offer and is inducted as a patient at the facility. He is told by the current leader of operations, Francis Freeman aka Ajax, that the facility puts patients through grueling experiments to unlock mutant powers via extreme stress and trauma.

Ajax soon puts Wade in a suffocation tank, which finally activates his healing factor, but horribly disfigures him as the cancer overtakes his body. Wade escapes and fights Ajax but is impaled to the ground via rebar and is left in the burning facility. However, he survives but is unwilling to return to Vanessa on account of his hideous scarred appearance. He opts to find Francis to make him reverse the process and undo his disfigurement. He gets the idea to operate as a costumed vigilante codenamed Deadpool, after seeing Weasel's bet on a dead pool, and moving in with a blind elderly woman named Bling Al.

The following year, as Deadpool, he proceeds to hunt down all of Ajax's associates and eventually locates Ajax and his envoy, intercepting them on a highway bridge. After subduing Ajax, he is interrupted by two X-Men, Colossus, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, who are there to apprehend them both. While ranting at them, Ajax slips away. In anger, Deadpool ends up breaking all his limbs due to Colossus' metal skin, but escapes detainment by cutting off his hand.

After returning home, his hand grows back, and he musters the courage to find Vanessa and confess his situation but finds out Ajax and Angel Dust have kidnapped Vanessa. He asks help from Colossus and Warhead and confronts Ajax at a decommissioned Helicarrier, who has Vanessa locked in a suffocation tank. After working his way through the soldiers, Deadpool finally battles Ajax atop the carrier, and with help from Vanessa and Warhead, collapses the carrier. Finally subduing Francis, the villain reveals he lied about being able to cure Wade, which prompts him to unceremoniously shoot him dead, much to Colossus' disappointment.

Afterwards, he finally reconciles Vanessa over his abandonment, and reluctantly lets her unmask him, revealing his scarred face to her. However, she gladly accepts it, and the two finally kiss, with Colossus telling Wade he will still make a great addition to the X-Men.

Deadpool 2[]

Deadpool returns in an adventure including fellow mutant mercenaries Cable and Domino.

Wade reveals he quit being Deadpool.

Deadpool returns in this film, set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In 2018, Deadpool arrives on Earth-616 to speak to Happy Hogan in hopes to join the Avengers. However, Happy kindly declines as he explains to Wade that the Avengers formed because people needed them, not the other way around. Feeling defeated, Wade returns to earth-10005 where he and Vanessa Carlysle break up due to his growing depression and he starts working at Drive Max, where he works for the next six years. In 2024, Wade has quit being Deadpool and comes home to find a birthday party thrown for him in the apartment with all his friends, including Vanessa. Wade and Vanessa talk, and she reveals she has a new boyfriend named Detroit, much to Wade's chagrin. After blowing out his candles, Wade is confronted by TVA agents, who kidnap him and take him to their headquarters.

Wade arrives at the TVA where he meets one of the employees, Paradox, who offers him a deal to find the anchor-being to save the multiverse. Wade eventually agrees, especially as he wants to matter and become known as someone who could be part of something. Wade is given a new Deadpool suit and steals Paradox's tempad and goes to find Wolverine from his world in 2029, after learning the latter is the anchor-being of Earth-10005. Deadpool arrives at the grave site of Logan/Wolverine from this world, only to find his corpse. After digging up the hero's corpse, Deadpoool is confronted by TVA agents, whom he kills before travelling the multiverse to find a variant of Wolverine to save his universe. Wade comes across various versions of Wolverine like Old Man Logan, Short Logan, Calverine and others before landing in a bar where he finds a drunk variant. Deadpool takes this depressed variant to the TVA, but Paradox dismisses this variant, calling him "the worst wolverine" and that Wade can't take a Wolverine from a different universe and call him the anchor-being. Deadpool is eventually pruned by the TVA, with Wolverine following shortly after. The two find themselves in a place known as the Void, where Deadpool is confronted by Wolverine, who is demanding to know what happened to them and where they are. The duo starts to fight and as Wolverine is about to kill Deadpool, the latter promises that he will try to get this Wolverine's world saved by the TVA.

Deadpool & Wolverine - Wolverine and Deadpool 5

Deadpool and Wolverine in the Void.

Deadpool and Wolverine come across a variant of Wilson, named Nicepool and his dog Dogpool, who Deadpool quickly takes a shine to. With help from Nicepool, Deadpool and Wolverine take the Honda Odissy to find a way to escape the Void. They come across Johnny Storm/Human Torch who Deadpool mistakes for Steve Rogers/Captain America, much to Wilson's excitement but is shocked when he says, "Flame on!" instead of "Avengers assemble!". Wilson accidentally gets Storm killed after meeting Cassandra Nova, by telling her what Johnny thinks of her. Deadpool and Wolverine escape, but they have a fight after Wolverine calls out Deadpool for his actions and as to why the Avengers wouldn't want him or that he couldn't keep his relationship with Vanessa going. Angry, Wilson fights Logan in the car to the point where they both fall asleep. While they are asleep, Electra drives them to a base where Deadpool and Wolverine meet a variant of Logan's daughter Laura and others. Wade manages to convince them and Wolverine to team up with him to escape the Void. They make their way back to Cassandra's base, where the team fights her henchmen while Deadpool and Wolverine confront Cassandra herself. Just as Deadpool is about to destroy Cassandra, Logan spares her life and as a thank you, she opens a portal which sends them through, back to earth-10005.

Deadpool & Wolverine - Wolverine and Deadpool 2

Deadpool and Wolverine about to face the Deadpool Corps.

Deadpool and Wolverine find themselves back on the streets of earth-10005 and learn that various Deadpoool variants have also entered this universe. They meet Wilson's variants including Lady Deadpool, Headpool, Kidpool, Babypool, and others, who are after them for being in the Void. Wade and Logan decide to kill all the Deadpool variants after Wade fails to get through to his hundreds of himself. After killing many variants, minus Lady Deadpool, Dogpool, Deadpool and Wolverine find tht Paradox and a member of the TVA have also come through the portal. Paradox warns the heroes that Cassandra Nova is trying to destroy the entire multiverse to try to only leave the Void as the only place to live. However, Paradox does warn Deadpool and Wolverine that there is a way to destroy the device: a sacrifice. Wade tells Logan that he has to do it because he has learnt how to become a hero he has always wanted to be, but Logan tries to convince the Merc that he has to do it as Wilson has family and friends who care for him, but Logan has no one. As Wolverine is about to go through the door to the device, Deadpool locks the door on him, leaving Wade to make the sacrifice play. However, just as the device is about to kill Wilson, Logan manages to arrive just in time and helps him by combining their powers, which destroys the system, saving the multiverse, and results in Cassandra's death.

Everyone believes Wade and Logan are dead but admire their ability to save earth-10005 and the multiverse. Deadpool and Wolverine suddenly appear at the door and are revealed to have survived the explosion. Paradox asks how the heroes managed to survive such power, to which Deadpool tells him that putting him and a Wolverine together is so strong that they can use their powers to do anything. Wilson asks Hunter B-15 if the TVA can save Logan's world, but she tells them it is unfortunately something that is not possible.

Deadpool & Wolverine - Wade & Vanessa

Wade and Vanessa get back togeher.

Following the recent events, Deadpool and Wolverine get Shrawma which Deadpool suggests as he remembers when the Avengers did the same thing after the battle of New York 12 years earlier. Deadpool asks Wolverine what he plans to do now that he can't return to his home universe, to which Logan tells Wilson he will figure something out. They are then reunited with Dogpool, much to Deadpool's excitement. Wilson adopts Dogpool since Nicepool died in battle earlier and invites Logan back to his apartment. Wilson introduces Logan to Blind Al who greets their guest warmly. Shortly following this, Wade and Althea throw a get together which includes Vanessa, Peter, and people who Wade and Logan met in the Void, who also managed to escape the domain not long after the heroes. Wade and Vanessa are able to rekindle their relationship while Logan settles into his new world, and at the very end, Deadpool proves to the audience that Johnny Storm really did say crude things about Cassandra and that Wade wasn't trying to get him killed.

Marvel Animation[]

Ultimate Spider-Man[]

Deadpool's face can be briefly seen on a Timely Magazine cover page during the battle between Spider-Man (in Wolverine's body) and Sabretooth.

Deadpool later appears as a video game character used by Harry to beat Parker who uses his alter-ego character in a video game at Harry's place.

Deadpool himself later appears in the series as a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. In his debut episode, he introduces himself (and interrupts Spider-Man's recap) to the audience and his mission to find Taskmaster. He returns to S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters to recruit Spider-Man, where the members of Spider-Man's group explained their history with Deadpool, prompting Spider-Man to ask him why he was giving an alumni visit. Deadpool explains that Agent McGuffin swiped encrypted S.H.I.E.L.D. files on the secret identities of every known hero, which Deadpool must retrieve. Spider-Man reluctantly tags along with Deadpool to learn things from him. During this time, Deadpool also continually tells and changes his origin story to make himself appear cooler to Spider-Man, such as saying that "ninjas stole his mother" and that Nick Fury adopted him afterwards.

While the two fly to the base, Agent McGuffin sends some of his henchmen to chase the two, with Deadpool concluding that he and Spider-Man must ditch the jet before he blasted the two out. The henchmen speed up and caught the two as they freefall to the ground, being defeated when Deadpool removed their backpacks and threw them at each other. On the ground, Deadpool told Spider-Man his plan was to "un-alive" Taskmaster and his men, which Spider-Man disapproved of. When Taskmaster shows up, Deadpool easily defeats him (due to Deadpool being so unpredictable he can't copy his moves) while Spider-Man grabs the hard drive with the secret identities. However, he then learns from Taskmaster and Deadpool that Deadpool was really the one who made the encrypted file in order to sell the secret identities on the market, with Taskmaster stealing it from him while he was in a restaurant bathroom. Spider-Man and Deadpool fight each other physically which evolves into a "fantasy fight" which Spider-Man wins with his morality. After all the fake origin stories he told before, Deadpool tells Spider-Man the truth: he was once a troubled, bullied kid recruited by Nick Fury to be a hero, but became disillusioned with Fury's goals and became a mercenary when he decided it was easier than carrying a conscience. After this, Deadpool then escapes using a jetpack, comically complaining that its rockets were burning his butt as he flew away.
