Campaign themes
2014
White's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[2]
Pensions
- Excerpt: "On pensions, promises have been made and those promises should be kept as best as we are able but our future will become much more uncertain unless we move from guaranteed benefits to a guaranteed contribution model. I am uncomfortable promising billions of dollars in guaranteed benefits 30 years into the future when we cannot pay our bills today. We need to learn from the example of the auto industry and the city of Detroit which has just filed bankruptcy. We cannot continue to make promises we cannot keep. The last thing we need is for Illinois to become another Detroit."
Progressive Income Tax
- Excerpt: "Graduated tax rates are something I have always opposed. Even when I worked full time and went to school full time, I never thought that someone who made more money than me should be required to pay a higher rate. The Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, has put forth a plan for progressive marginal tax rates in Illinois ranging from 5% to 11%. Under this plan, a family earning between $5000 and $100,000 annually would pay a 5% marginal tax rate; a family earning $100,000 to $150,000 would pay 7.5%; these rates continue upward until the people earning over $1 million would pay a rate of 11%. When the 2.5% Personal Property Replacement Tax is added in, the total corporate tax rate would be 13.5% under this plan. This would mean Illinois would have the highest corporate tax rate in the nation and one of the highest in the world. Raising taxes and making Illinois the home to the highest corporate income tax in the nation is not the way to create jobs and grow our economy. This is why I am opposed to moving Illinois from a flat tax to a graduated income tax."
Jobs
- Excerpt: "Illinois needs to do a better job attracting jobs and opportunities. We have one of the worst unemployment rates in the entire country. Only the state of Nevada has a higher unemployment rate than Illinois. As State Representative, I will fight for common-sense reforms to roll back onerous regulations that stifle job growth. I will also introduce and work to pass lawsuit reforms to make our state more attractive to job creators. Finally, I will support efforts to lower state income taxes and create a better environment for job growth."
Ethics
- Excerpt: "We have got to do a better job making our social spending accountable. On August 27th, legislation (SB 2380) introduced by Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno was signed into law. This law prevents politicians from using grant money for political purposes. This is a good start but we need better accountability throughout all of government. I will fight for accountability for spending in all social programs. Programs that are not providing the results that were promised when money was made available should be cut. Having accountability in all of these programs will ultimately reduce the fraud, waste and abuse that we hear about every year. We need to be confident that any taxpayer money spent should be for the benefit of the taxpayers of this state."
Abortion
- Excerpt: "As a Christian, I cannot ever support the “Choice” to terminate pregnancy based on a “mistake.” I am pro-life and adamantly oppose partial birth abortion."
2nd Amendment
- Excerpt: "I support the right of honest citizens to carry arms. I support concealed carry and I will adamantly oppose attempts by Chicago politicians to limit our 2nd Amendment rights. As a US Army veteran that has fought in a foreign war against tyranny, I believe this to be a fundamental and necessary right that should be protected. If Cook County thinks it important to them, then they need to pass their own laws and not tread on downstate rights."
Same Sex Marriage
- Excerpt: "Now that the State of Illinois has passed legislation and the Governor is set to sign, this is an issue that is not likely to see any action in the State of Illinois anytime in the near future. I still believe that marriage is defined in the Judeo-Christian belief of a union between one man and one woman. The fact that this bill passed was a bit shocking, especially since the substance of the action allows a homosexual union to be called marriage, for which all of the rights and privileges of the previously passed Civil Unions had already conveyed."
