What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
“ | 1) Criminal Justice Reform |
” |
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?
“ | Bridging the gap between grassroots movements and elected representatives, Carol Ammons is an experienced, independent Democrat who has effectively worked for the citizens of Champaign-Urbana. She has over ten years of service in elected office, at the county, city and state level. Since she was elected as state Representative in 2014, Carol has worked to end the economic “race to the bottom” for Illinois families, reform the criminal justice system, defend union members and their right to bargain collectively, and protect our environment. Carol has passed multiple pieces of legislation with bipartisan support in the Illinois House of Representatives. Including legislation to stop the dumping of toxic chemicals in the landfill above her communities sole-source of drinking water, lowering the cost of phone calls from Illinois prisons to ensure families can stay connected, stronger police accountability measures, and implementing protections for temporary workers. During the budget crisis, Carol has fought to restore funding to our domestic violence shelters, voted for seven appropriations bills, and is a member of the budget negotiation team. Carol is committed to social, racial, and most importantly what underpins both of those - economic justice. She comes from a proud union household and before being elected, worked in social services.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[13]

2014
Ammons' campaign website highlighted the following issues:[14]
Education
- Excerpt: "I advocate shifting reliance on K-12 financing from property taxes to a graduated state income tax. That revenue source should be used to equalize funding across state school districts and to increase state funding for higher education."
State Pensions
- Excerpt: "State workers who have been promised pensions should be able to collect them in full when they retire. The decrease in the cost of living adjustment for state retirees (except judges who will rule on the legality of the measure!), and the new requirements for retirees to refund a portion of their pensions to the state for their group health policies, is a further degradation by the legislature of its constitutional and moral obligation to those who have worked for the state."
Collective Bargaining and Wages
- Excerpt: "I support the right to unionization and collective bargaining in both the private and the public sectors. I support living wages that will permit working people to lead decent lives above the poverty level without needing recourse to public assistance like food stamps. The present state minimum wage is insufficient to meet this goal. It needs to be increased."
Environment
- Excerpt: "As a county board member and city council member, I have been, and will continue to be, opposed to dumping and mining threats to our precious supply of ground water and out lakes and streams. I support a shift from our strong reliance on fossil fuel to wind and solar energy sources. I have also been a strong proponent of urban and community organic gardening."
Economics
- Excerpt: "I fully support Representative Naomi Jakobsson’s proposal for a constitutional amendment for a progressive income tax referred to as the Fair Tax Amendment. Like Jakobsson, I would have voted against the way the legislature has abused its obligation to fully fund the state pension systems as a way to generate revenue for completely extraneous purposes. I will continue to explore other sources of revenue to help pay the State’s bills."

Endorsements
2014
In 2014, Ammons' endorsements included the following:[15]
ScorecardsA scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety. Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number. Click here for an overview of legislative scorecards in all 50 states.
