Oh that's our sister. Our...hee hee... big sister.
―Phineas Flynn

"Attack of the 50 Foot Sister" is the 51st episode of Phineas and Ferb, as well as the first segment of the third episode from Season 2. It originally aired on Disney XD on February 21, 2009 and on Disney Channel on May 1, 2009.

Synopsis[]

Phineas and Ferb create a growth elixir to help Baljeet win a giant watermelon contest. Candace secretly uses the elixir, intending to become tall enough to qualify as the next Flawless Girl, but accidentally grows into a giant. Meanwhile, with the Festival's annoyance, Dr. Doofenshmirtz plans to disrupt the Festival with the "worst smell in the history of mankind."

Summary[]

"It's the Baljeet signal!"

"It's the Baljeet signal!"

Candace and Stacy are watching television in Candace's room. Stacy reads from a Flawless Girl magazine, which also just so happens to be what they were watching on television from a commercial, that the founder, Blanca Dishon, will be at the Mid-Summer's Festival to search for the next Flawless Girl. Candace, feeling confident that she might have a shot at being the next Flawless Girl, decides to sign up. Outside, Phineas and Ferb see the Midsummer's Festival trucks driving by before they get a signal from Baljeet. He asks them to help him grow his shrunken watermelon at the Midsummer's Festival since they helped him build his portal to Mars. Phineas agrees to help him and tells Ferb that they're going to the festival and to grab his Jr. Chemistry Set he got for Bastille Day.

Meanwhile, Perry enters his lair through a koi pond along with three other fish, whom Major Monogram hires as secret agents to avoid a dispute. He tells Perry to go see Dr. Doofenshmirtz.

"I've turned into Bobblehead Candace!"

"I've turned into Bobblehead Candace!"

Phineas and Ferb meet Baljeet at the festival where he shows them how shamefully small his watermelon is. The two brothers take out Ferb's chemistry set as they synthesize a growth elixir to help grow Baljeet's watermelon. Candace arrives at the festival elsewhere to find the Flawless Girl booth and meets P. P. Otter, founder of the Oddball show, which is a freak show. He offers to help make her feel better about herself by explaining that she can pay $5 to see his oddballs, but she declines. She then comes across Phineas, Ferb, and Baljeet as they were about to pour the growth elixir on Baljeet's watermelon. But when they put a drop on Baljeet's watermelon as she watches, it only grows a few inches, much to Candace's amusement as she assumes that's all it did before walking away. Baljeet sadly wants to put up shame curtains due to this with Phineas explaining that it hasn't taken full effect yet.

Candace heads off to the Flawless Girl booth, where Blanca sits. Blanca tells Candace to stand over by a measuring post and sees that she is two inches (5.08 cm) away from the minimum height of 5'10" as per one of the lyrics in the brand's song ("Never less than 5 foot 10"). Candace walks away with her new Flawless Girl skin care items, which Blanca handed her as a consolation, stating that buying the products is the only way she can get close to being a Flawless Girl. Candace walks away with her new Flawless Girl skin care items, which Blanca handed her as a consolation, stating that buying the products is the only way she can get close to being a Flawless Girl. Candace talks to her mother on the phone about her self-criticism about her height, assuming she can never be perfect no matter what, even saying her need of a growth spurt in the next fifteen minutes. She then recalls that Phineas and Ferb's growth elixir before hanging up the phone and returning to the laboratory set. While Phineas, Ferb, and Baljeet are still waiting for the watermelon to grow big, Candace steals the growth elixir from them and pours a drop on herself, making her two inches taller. Candace returns to the Flawless Girl booth, where Blanca, impressed by her new height, informs her that she is now in the running to be the next Flawless Girl.

As it turned out, the growth elixir was far more powerful than what Candace had anticipated, as Baljeet's watermelon grows to be the biggest one at the festival. Meanwhile, Candace meets with Stacy to inform her that she is participating in the auditions, which begin in two hours. Suddenly, her nose and head grew in size. After hiding inside a tent (and unintentionally running past P.P. Otter, who was on the phone discussing about new talent for his show because no one would pay him to see his oddballs anymore, and noticed her freakishly enormous head), Candace decides to tell Phineas and Ferb to remove the effects of the growth elixir on her. The rest of her body gows to the size of her head, resulting in a 50-foot (15.24 m) tall giant.

She sneaks over towards her brothers, pleading to them if they have some way to reverse the growth elixir's effects. That is when P. P. Otter walks over and gives Candace his business card in case she wants to join his show. He walks away afterwards and Candace explains to Phineas and Ferb that they gotta change her back to her normal size due to the Flawless Girl auditions starting in a couple of hours.

Meanwhile at Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated, Perry enters the building, interrupting The Slacks singing Doofenshmirtz's evil jingle. Doofenshmirtz then traps him in a baby toy, telling him about his cousin Gertrude's baby shower he went to the other day which he got the idea for the trap from. He then explains that he has created a device that will cover the entire Tri-state area with the smell of dirty diapers that he had gotten from the baby shower, as he gets annoyed from the noise of the Mid-Summer's Festival.

Back with Candace, Phineas, and Ferb, the latter two have yet to figure out how to reverse the effects of the growth elixir. Candace begins to tear up, claiming that she will never be a Flawless Girl because of her height. She chooses to visit P.P. Otter, assuming that is the only place she would only fit in with. Since she thought she would be living with the carnies from now on, she tells her brothers to inform their parents that she loves them before stomping off to visit him. Phineas and Ferb exchange worried glances.

Upon accepting P. P. Otter's request, he tells her to climb a skyscraper while carrying him dressed in a gorilla suit (which he had been wearing all day) in a reversed twist of King Kong as a promotional stunt. Candace climbs up the Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated building while inside, Doofenshmirtz guides Perry to the balcony at the same time Candace is seen through the window climbing as he somehow doesn't notice the giant girl climbing his building, where he shows his Smell-inator and a flask filled with liquid concentrated dirty diaper smell that he plans to use to spread the liquid throughout the festival.

When Candace reaches the top of the building, Blanca spots her and heads to the top floor to tell Candace that she is the next Flawless Girl, amazed to see what Candace had been able to accomplish. She even explained that girls will never be able to live up to the expectations she had set because of her new height and that they'll be forced to buy her products forever. P. P. Otter begins to argue with her over Candace. However, Candace realizes that both of them make money off of people's natural insecurities, with P. P. Otter showing oddballs to make people feel better about themselves and Blanca making beauty unattainable to make people feel worse about themselves. She even adds to the both of them that even though she is now a 50-foot tall giant, she knows that all of this is still out of her reach. With that in mind, she decides to stop making beauty the focus of her life as it had kept her distracted from the real focus of her life: busting Phineas and Ferb. She leaves Blanca and P. P. Otter on top of the building while wishing them both peace and jumps down to the ground to go do just that.

Candace also leaves the growth elixir on top of the building, leading Blanca and P. P. Otter to have a fight over it upon noticing it, accidentally throwing it off the building. It lands into Doofenshmirtz's hands. He inadvertently inserts the elixir into the invention, activates it, and sets the range selector option to be about 200 yards around the building. However, the option is accidently set to the entire universe after Perry kicks him into—who was saved from the trap by one of the fish agents who came to his aid so Perry could fight him—making the majority of the universe grow larger in comparison to Candace (who is about to arrive home to show her mom that the boys made her into a giant), giving her the impression that she is back to her normal size the moment after going inside the house.

Back at Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated, Doofenshmirtz wonders what went wrong since nothing smelled any different after the use of the invention and Perry kicks him again as he lands on the table, with the dirty diaper smell that was on his table landing in his hands. Perry then kicks him again and this time the dirty diaper flask, lands on the top of his building, surrounding it with the smell. Perry puts all the fish agents in a plastic bag and makes his escape afterwards right before the building was covered, leaving Doofenshmirtz to wonder what was he thinking.

Due to the universe becoming larger, Baljeet's watermelon was returned to its usual size, making him lose the contest right when he was about to win. He then goes home to put up his shame curtains.

Background information[]

  • This episode, as well as two commentaries for it, are available on the Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension DVD. One is from by the show's creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff Marsh. The other gets done by the characters they voice, Doctor Doofenshmirtz and Major Monogram, respectively.
  • In the character commentary, Monogram mentions he dated Blanca Dishon once when he was an exchange student in France. However, it seems like he did not enjoy it.
    • Also, during above commentary, when Candace climbs Doofenshmirtz's building as he passes with Perry, Doof comments on how he did not even notice her, wondering how he did not feel her vibration. He also discovers how his plan failed after watching the boy's growth formula winding up in his hands, shouting frantically at his episode version not to put it in as Monogram laughs both times.
      • He also comments about how he did not notice the boy's growth formula winding up in his hands along with adding about how he somehow didn't notice himself putting it into the machine despite him facing the other way while doing so since he was talking to Perry while he was doing so. He also comments about how the growth elixir got to the top of his building before it fell into his hands when Candace was not shown to be holding it nor putting it down before leaving along with stating it as a possibly of scene being cut out from it at some time.
  • In the creators commentary of the Episode, they explain that the original scent of the Smell-Inator was going to be the smell of Doofenshmirtz's uncle Justin but was changed to the scent of dirty diapers likely to prevent controversy from people named Justin being potentially offended.
    • Also, at one point during the above commentary, Povenmire and Marsh comment about how they basically wanted to show the audience that they should be happy with the way they are and not let anybody else tell them otherwise along with mentioning that there are people out there who take advantage of their insecurities. Both also mention that they are perfectly happy with the way they are.
      • They also comment about how they basically made everything in the universe bigger to match Candace perfectly instead of returning her to her normal size.
  • After the blue potion went all over Doof's building, he was taking baths in tomato juice for a week. (Attack of the 50 Foot Sister - Character Commentary)

Production information[]

  • Episode description from a 2009 Disney XD Phineas and Ferb press release:[1]
When Baljeet enters a vegetable growing contest at the local fair, Phineas and Ferb create the PhineasandFerbalizer to speed up the growing process. Meanwhile, Candace is attempting to make her way in the modeling business, but is told she's too short. Phineas and Ferb use their newest invention to help her grow, but she doesn't stop growing.
  • In iTunes, the episode gets described as "Attack of the 50 Foot Candace" and for On Demand versions of the episode such as Netflix, Kids On Demand, iTunes, etc., in the episode's description, the growth elixir gets referred to as "Phineasandferbalizer".

International premieres[]

Errors[]

  • When the Flawless Girl uses her mascara in close up, her eye is a different shape and is smaller than usual.
  • One of the lines in the Flawless Girl song is "She's at the forefront of every trend" but when Blanca shows Candace the lyric sheet for the same song, the line gets listed as "At the forefront of every trend". Though is possible that those were originally the lyrics for the band's song and that Blanca had the original lyric sheet instead without realizing it or they were working on changing the lyrics for the band's song and that the sheet Blanca had was a new version of the band's song that wasn't even completed yet without realizing it either.
  • The notes in the lyric sheet for the Flawless Girl song are different from the notes heard during the real song.
    Linda has a transparent neck?

    Linda has a transparent neck?

  • Linda's neck gets transparent the second time she appears when she is talking on the phone with Candace. It is also oddly positioned.
  • When Stacy and Candace are in front of the mirror, Stacy's and Candace's heads are littler than the reality, but the mirror isn't made for that, because of his shape.
  • When Candace runs out of the house of mirrors, her tongue gets enlarged then her head but it shouldn't because when Candace turned into Bobblehead Candace after seeing it for herself in the mirror, her tongue was normal. It could also be that her tongue was in the full phase before the rest of her body.
  • It is bizarre that Doofenshmirtz had a banjo, because he said he hated musical instruments that start with the letter "B" ("Mom's Birthday"), though this likely belonged to The Slacks, and not Doofenshmirtz. That said, Doofenshmirtz did have golf clubs even though he said he didn't play golf ("One Good Scare Ought to Do It!").
  • When Candace says "...and you make beauty totally unattainable so they'll feel worse about themselves!..." when pointing her left hand towards Blanca, her left hand is smaller than her right one (viewer's left).
  • Phineas and Ferb never labeled their growth elixir, and since Candace and Baljeet were the only ones who they told them what it was called, P.P. Otter and Blanca wouldn't have known what it was called without a label on it as Candace never told them what it was called before she left to go bust Phineas and Ferb, instead P.P. Otter immediately finds out what it was called without a label on it as soon he immediately notices it behind him after Candace left.
    • In that same scene before Blanca and P.P. Otter started fighting over it and before it fails into Doofenshmirtz's hands, Candace wasn't shown to be holding it or putting it down before leaving.
  • When Agents F release Perry, they break O.W.C.A.'s by-laws, which state, "No additional agents are allowed to thwart any single evil scientist if said first agent assigned is still well and able to carry out his duties." ("Perry the Actorpus") That said, Perry did release Sergei the Snail when he was in a similar situation like how he was in this episode for him to continue his duties in that episode. It is also possible that said by-law came later on sometime after this episode.
  • Technically, when Dr. Doofenshmirtz puts the growth elixir into the Smellinator, the universe should've grown slightly and then after an unknown period of time grow ten times its original mass. Instead, it grows entirely at once. Being used in a machine may have accelerated the process, though. It's also possible that the growth elixir might not always take a long time to process whenever is used on something and for that to be unknown to Phineas, Ferb, and Baljeet.
  • Near the end of the episode when Doofenshmirtz is wondering why the Smell-inator didn't have any effect, he is standing near the beaker of the liquid dirty diaper smell. Agent P kicks him over and past the cart that the beaker was sitting on and he lands next to the cart again.
    • In that same scene before he is kicked over by Agent P, the bottle that Phineas and Ferb had their growth elixir in and was put into the machine by Doofenshmirtz himself earlier disappears after it was used in the machine.
  • Despite being shown to have acrophobia (fear of heights) in earlier episodes, such as "S'Winter", "Bowl-R-Ama Drama", and later in "Return Policy", Candace doesn't seem to be afraid of climbing up Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated (which at least in this episode is taller than her even when she became 50 feet tall) or of being 50 feet tall when she became that tall, or reaching the top of the building. She also jumps off it after she left Blanca and P. P. Otter on it as well. It's possible that this fear was temporarily cured while she was enlarged.
  • When the Growth elixir is thrown off the balcony of Doofenshmirtz Evil Inc, Doofenshmirtz shouldn't have caught it because it fell off the right while he was on the left.

Continuity[]

  • Phineas asks Ferb to get out his chemistry set he got from Bastille Day. Ferb also received a camera on Bastille Day ("The Lake Nose Monster").
  • The episode takes place a few days after "Unfair Science Fair" as Baljeet says: "A few days ago, you helped me build a portal to Mars.." If the episodes had been ran correctly, it would have been about four days, going by the episode number for that one and this one.

Allusions[]

  • Attack of the 50 Foot Woman - The title of the episode is likely a parody of the 1958 film and its 1993 remake.
  • Batman - When Baljeet calls Phineas and Ferb on their holographic device, Phineas exclaims "It's the Baljeet Signal!", a reference to Batman.
  • Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope - Baljeet's message, particularly the "Help me, Phineas and Ferb! You are my only hope!", is a near copy of Princess Leia's plea to General Kenobi. Baljeet also uses a hologram, and even mirror's Leia's actions at the end (looking over his shoulder and kneeling down to turn off the recorder). The background music during this scene is also similar. In the character commentary from the DVD release of Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension, Doofenshmirtz points out that this is a Star Wars reference.
  • Beakman's World - When Phineas and Ferb are developing the potion, Phineas says "Bada-Beem, Bada-Boom" (catchphrase of Beakman).
  • SpongeBob SquarePants - Candace becoming a giant but not wanting to be one and moaning about her size is similar to the episode "Giant Squidward", where Squidward becomes a giant after being sprayed by his kelp grow that SpongeBob and Patrick were fooling around with and turned him into a giant with it, much to his displeasure.
  • Symbol cipher - W

- P.P. Otter's name is most likely a parody of P.T. Barnum, of Barnum and Bailey's fame. As well as a urine joke. His surname might be a reference to an alleged joke played by Barnum: visitors to his show saw a sign pointing to the Water Otter exhibit - which turned out it was a kettle. It is likely the reason his show is called an Oddball Show instead of a freakshow is to avoid sparking controversy.

  • King Kong - When Candace grows to become 50 feet (15.24 meters) tall, she climbs the Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated building, holding P.P. Otter, who is wearing a gorilla suit. In his own words, it is a "reversal of a familiar theme" and it was also under his suggestion that he had in mind.
  • The Powerpuff Girls - At the end of this episode, the whole universe expands to make it appear as though Candace has returned to her normal size, even though she actually hasn't. This is similar to the ending of The Powerpuff Girls episode "What's the Big Idea?" where Professor Utonium attempts to use Mojo Jojo's growth ray in reverse to shrink Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup back to normal size. Earlier, Mojo had used the device to turn them into giants, preventing them from stopping his crimes without causing destruction to Townsville. After Blossom accidentally crushes the device due to her size, Professor Utonium repairs it, thinking he has made it work in reverse. However, instead of shrinking the girls, it causes the entire city of Townsville to expand beyond the size of the Earth. After Mojo Jojo is defeated and thrown in jail, he realizes the girls never actually shrank and admits that his device does not work in reverse. The difference between the two episodes is that, in The Powerpuff Girls, only Townsville grows larger than Earth, while in this episode, the entire universe, including Earth, expands.
  • Pinky and the Brain - The mishap with Doofenshmirtz's smell-inator after the growth elixir was put in without Doofenshmirtz realizing that he put in the wrong potion, in which the planet grows and makes giant Candace the same size relative to her surroundings, recalls the plot and ending of the short "Tokyo Grows".
  • The Karate Kid - Perry is standing in the "Crane Position" while Doofenshmirtz is wondering what happened to the Smellinator and delivers the kick after he finds the dirty diaper beaker.

Trivia[]

  • The two boys from the Flawless Girl commercial are the two boys that see Candace in It's Candace ("One Good Scare Ought to Do It!").
  • Three new agents show up in this episode, which are all fish. They are given hats and made agents to avoid a lawsuit.
  • As the carnival trucks pass the Flynn-Fletcher house, the melody heard resembles the melody of the second verse of the theme song.
  • This is the first episode of Season 2 that Baljeet appears without Buford.
  • Doofenshmirtz breaks the fourth wall by complaining about the festival being so loud that he can't even hear his own evil jingle.
  • This is the first time the Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated jingle singers show up, presumably in a recording studio in the Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated building.
  • Second time the "Evil Jingle" gets referred to by name. ("I Scream, You Scream")
  • Isabella does not appear in this episode nor its second segment Backyard Aquarium.
  • Candace's height is revealed to be 5'8" (1.72 m).
  • This is the first time Candace changes her size in the series.
    • This is also the only time Candace has height angst in the series.
  • Assuming that Candace grew to exactly 50 feet tall as a result of exposure to the growth elixir, she became 8.824 times as tall as she was when the day began. Likewise, the Earth and the rest of the objects in the universe are now also 8.824 times larger than they were. Nobody notices because all measuring devices have grown by the same amount - as Einstein pointed out, everything is relative.
  • This is one of few episodes where Stacy appears in person, but her name is not spoken once.
  • Dr. Doofenshmirtz tells Perry that he went to his cousin Gertrude's baby shower. Gertrude is also Candace's middle name. ("Fireside Girl Jamboree", "Hip Hip Parade")
  • Second time Candace spends most of the episode after being changed by an invention in the series. ("Does This Duckbill Make Me Look Fat?")
  • This is one of the rare times Phineas and Ferb are laughing at Candace (or at least trying not to).
  • Phineas says the growth elixir only works once, which explains why Candace stayed the same size that she already was after the full effects of it while the rest of the universe grew.
  • While on top of the Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated building, Candace says, "Giant Candace is out, peace!" In "Unfair Science Fair Redux (Another Story)", she says, "Queen Candace is out! Peace!"
  • This is the only time in the series where Candace tried to bust Phineas and Ferb for something that was actually her own fault, as she used the growth elixir they created on herself after taking it from them without their knowledge or consent.
  • This is the only speaking appearances of Blanca and P. P. Otter.
  • This is the first episode of the series whose title starts with the phrase "Attack of the [...]" the second would be "Attack of the Candace Suit".
