One: The aghastment and horrilation about the terrible, appalling, shocking etc nature of gas warfare is nonsense. There is nothing unusually hideous about the use of toxic chemicals. Hideous, yes, but not unusually hideous. Boring old workaday artillery, that nobody criticizes, leaves children watching as mommy frantically clutches at intestines spilling from her opened belly, leaves men without legs trying to drag themselves along until gushing femoral arteries end consciousness, causes traumatic brain injury that leaves its beneficiaries drooling and burbling for life. Poison gas can do no better.
The whole business of WMD, Weapons of Mass Destruction, is two-thirds twaddle useful for herding dim publics. Gas has very seldom been used since the World War One days of Wilfred Owen, not because of its vileness but because it has not proved particularly useful militarily. Horribleness does not bother soldiers, who are amoral when they are not actually sadistic.
Biological warfare? It sounds, like, you know, really scary and all, but in fact is not militarily enticing because it is not controllable and can backfire on its users. It serves nicely, however, to alarm publics with minds of low voltage. We are most especially supposed to be frightened of anthrax. Since it is not contagious it is more in the nature of a poison and in any event hard to use.
Only three weapons of mass destruction exist: Nuclear explosives, artillery, and aerial bombing. Think Dresden, Hiroshima, Guernica, Falluja.
Two: Whoever wrote Trump’s speech for him–he obviously cannot put together two sentences with dependent clauses without wandering onto the far shores of incoherence–worked the moral-outrage pump hard. The gas attack, by whomever made, killed, eeek, squeak, seventy civilians and little children. More hamster-herding: git along little furry dogies. On many days in the Mid-East, the United States has killed more civilians than all the gas attacks real or invented in the entire war. The pilots, unprincipled as are all military men, know they are doing it, and don’t care. They get paid for their humanitarianism. By us.
Three: Something smells. The use of toxins, either by Assad in Syria or by Russia in West Pakistan–England, I meant, England–makes no sense. Assad had won his war and had no need of gassing a few civilians. He would have to know that it would give Washington a pretext for an attack. Which it did. Is Assad so foolish?
Similarly with the poisoning of what’s-his-spy and his daughter. Russia had nothing to gain and a great deal to lose, as we have seen. It is one thing to believe Mr. Putin capable of bad things. To believe him stupid is quite another. Note that Theresa May became hysterical before it was established that Russia did it, which has still not been established. The orchestrated expulsion of Russian diplomats by all the vassal states, also before anything definitive had been determined, was just too cute.
Hamster herding.
Four: Who had anything to gain by the gaseous adventurism Answer: The American Empire–not America, not Americans–and Israel. Both are desperate to keep Syria from surviving. Note that Washington has a history of lying the country into wars. The Maine in 1898, the Gulf of Tonkin, the imaginary WMD in Gulf I. Plus ca change, plus ca doesn’t.
Five: Syria is of no importance, at all, to America or Americans. It has nothing America wants or needs. It poses no danger to America. It is somewhere else. This lack of vital interest to America it shares with North Korea, Afghanistan, the Ukraine, the Crimea, the South China Sea, and all the other places where the Empire looks for war. Then why does Washington risk nuclear war by accident with Russia, which also poses no danger to America?
Because the Empire’s hegemony over the Mid-East, Asia, and the world weakens. The Empire totters. Syria is at the heart of the looming demise.
Things go badly, Empire-wise. Start with the war on Afghanistan, now creeping toward its third decade, and neighboring Pakistan. China invests heavily in infrastructure in Pakistan: The Karakoram Highway, the Karachi reactors, the China Pakistan Economic Corridor, the IP pipeline, Guadar. If–when—America leaves, Pakistan will become an economic client state of China, without a shot being fired. Afghanistan will quickly follow as China invests in its minerals. This is why Washington cannot leave.
Afghanistan borders Iran, which Washington maintains as an enemy at the behest of Israel. Iran borders Iraq, wrecked by the United States and sharing a religion with Iran. Without the threat of American military power, it could easily align itself with Iran and Asia. In Syria, Assad seems to have won unless the Empire doubles or triples down. Thus the contrived gassing of children and Trump’s missile attack. Turkey balances between east and west, and could easily decide that Asia is the future.
The Empire totters, wounded and dangerous.
Six: Washington’s approach to hegemony is military, relying on bombing and economic sanctions. This requires huge military expenditures that cripple the domestic economy and produces countless countries that would break with America if they could. By contrast, China’s approach is economic, smarter and much cheaper. It is China’s Belt and Road Initiative to integrate all of Eurasia into one huge trading block, excluding guess who, that has the Empire in a panic. How do you bomb a trade agreement?
Seven: Russia and China have adult leadership. Putin and Xi are stable, intelligent, and competent. Their interests are not Washington’s and they will do whatever is in the interest of their countries, but they are not stupid, ignorant, weak, juvenile, or crazy. By contrast, Trump is a loon, ignorant of practically everything, mentally chaotic, and easily modified.

At this stage in the game I’m not one to ramble about “3D Chess”, but I get the sense that Trump’s tweeting was intended to warn Putin and thus deescalate. Of course on the flip side we have (uncomfirmed) reports that Trump and his bloodthirsty NSC chair Fox Bolton were arguing for a bigger attack than the generals would agree to.
If nothing else it’s quite clear that any effort to withdraw from Syria simply immediately results in a false flag attack. Even if chemical weapons were as awful as is supposed (I agree with Mr. Reed), that doesn’t make it relevant to American interests.
The strangest thing with Syria is how obsessed the Empire is with destroying it. Various reasons are given such as Israel, gas pipelines, and containing Iran. At the end of the day I think it’s primarily psychological. The Empire is outraged that the Assman dares to resist.`
America’s best course is disentanglement and isolation, which many, perhaps most of the people want.

Poison gas can do no better.
No, poison gas is worse. Would you rather be shot or blown up OR have your eyes, throat, and lungs sizzle to toxic gas?
Even Hitler understood. He experienced the effect of gas in WWI and even when Germany was losing in WWII, he never used chemical weapons.
All weapons are horrible. But the problem with gas is it offers no escape.
You may dodge bullets. You may hunker down to avoid artillery. But once gas spreads, there is nowhere to run.
People used to be proud to be Americans. Now many feel ashamed, not only of their leaders, but also their country.
The shame will only grow as more of the Empire’s evil acts are committed and revealed.

Excellent article, Mr. Reed. I think point (5) alone is enough. The 1st paragraph of that point says it all. This stuff is none of America’s business. We need to GTFO. This, along with something you hinted at but did not clearly state, that America is WAY BEYOND FLAT BROKE*, are more than enough. All the rest of the strategy, alliances, and entanglements talk is thereby made entirely unnecessary.

Are you sure, however, that you’re not being unfair to hamsters? Maybe lemmings rushing into the sea would be a better metaphor.
The percentage of gas casualties who died as a result of their wound was much lower than for injuries inflected by other means (shell splinters, explosives, bullets). Taking countermeasures against chemical attacks is possible. To be effective, gas usually has to be delivered by the ton, usually by artillery. Nerve gas is much deadlier, but also very tricky to use.
Not advocating gas warfare, but it’s not a death ray.

Irrelevant. Trump is a punching bag, that is as much as Obama was a surfboard, these figureheads are actors, better or worse. Putin, Xi, do matter, Putin harnessed a streamlined decision making nucleus out of chaos internally, it again gave meaning to the mention of “Russia”. Xi probably does matter, we do not know, neither of us were able to observe one or the other. What matters is that there is rational coherence in both systems, China and Russia. Because of infighting, the West looks ridiculously bloated, and stumbling.
As to “hamster herding”, include “media herding”, consenting and dissenting alike. The main reasons for the latter are “bread” writing, and real “believes” of ignorance. Seems the layer, includes second tier politicians, “public intellectuals” alike. A case of “garbage in, garbage out” and a secondary condition of individual middle class jockeying.
As to the choice of what can be called “military capitalism” of the US, it has no longer any other options, contrary to Russia and China. Give or take a single percentage point or two, there must be some insiders that fully understand that the global system of economics is now running into the wall, there is no solution to that. Neither is there a venue-way for China, or Russia, economically, outside of global consent. They might have a few cycles more of trade, cleaning the plate, which they choose to do, what looks admirable in the short term to many, but ultimately will equally grind to a standstill.
Our take,
… globally, there is some consensus about above, in minimal, stealthy cycles, and the situation in Syria today is to be seen as a proverbial napkin sketch of the architect of project global government. Putin was degraded in his status, his error, to propagate nationalistic posing on the world scene, was offensive to the project of world rule. He got away with a warning and loss of face.
There was, and is, to be seen some experimenting with method(stealth outside the public view), timeliness and international consent. That is hopeful, if one can get from a pot-shot, and not firing back, to addressing the real problems of the world, all and every, only solvable by global consent, and in a timely manner, Syria must be seen as a hopeful experiment of “global collegiate” ruling.
If “real” war, not policing, “real” major shifts of riches, from finite, generational elites to abhorrent masses of commoners and ridiculous attitudes middle classes, results, we humbly retract. The crest of the wave will have an undercurrent: even worse conditions applied to the number of human under-classes, even temporarily more wastelands created, …but adhering to collegiate global consent, and sold to the masses as a prime Hollywood style production. That is what the elites seem to strive for.
The important element is they seem to grasp, as only sub-group of humanity, that they are condemned to one another, the “chevalier seul” attitudes are projections to the public.

CS gas such as was used at Waco, TX by the FBI and US Army killed 88 Americans on 4-19-93. Trump needs to send 103 cruise missiles against US the bases involved in those murders of unarmed civilians: Ft. Hood, TX; Anniston, AL; Washington., DC and San Antonio, TX.
You can move uphill or upwind or outflank gas in a lot of situations. As Fred notes, it’s not too effective which is why Hitler didn’t use it, not because a megalomaniac like Hitler thought my gracious, chemical warfare is just too cruel to inflict on my enemies. Napalm and flamethrowers are way more effective and terrifying, and neither side had any hesitation about using them.
Bullets can’t be “dodged.” A fire team volley is an invisible hail storm moving faster than sound–you can’t move faster than sound, or even close to it. You are either behind a bullet-proof barrier, or the bullets miss you. Otherwise you are an intact human being one instant and the next you’re an astonished, frightened animal who just experienced a sense-killing shock like grabbing a live wire.
Artillery is terrifying too. You can hunker down all you like, but it just depends on where the shells hit. And again, the shockwave and shrapnel from solid turning to gas at ultra-hypersonic speed are invisible. The explosions are completely disorienting.
“Gas” is not unique in offering “no escape,” nor in the infliction of horrible, life-altering injuries. And depending on the situation, it can be the other way around.

It was and is widely thought to be unethical, probably because it is like a poison. It was quite effective in limited scenarios, which is why it was used in WWI and why the British seem to have used it in Iraq. Hitler actually did make some attempt to follow international rules of war, which is why the Blitz was not until after the British had bombed Berlin.

“the British seem to have used it in Iraq”: they didn’t apparently. After WWI Churchill wanted Iraqi villages bombed with tear gas but it wasn’t actually done. (This knowledge came from the internet and therefore is even more open to correction than usual.)
In its way it would have been quite humane: drive the villagers out with tear gas then bomb the village with explosives. That way you mete out punishment without killing lots of people. It’s not a combination that has been used elsewhere, as far as I know.

JJ, I understand your anger, but I would be happy if just the major perps would be convicted. Sunday the Austin American-Statesman ran a comprehensive story commemorating the entire incident as it unfolded. Basically it was your Federal government at its worst. Yesterday the same paper ran an article concerning the lessons learned from that debacle, many years too late and millions of dollars too short. In the article one of the FBI agents there, now retired indicated he believed Hillary was the one who actually gave the go ahead to set fire to the compound.

Sure, but this is looking at things from a relatively honest moral perspective, based on some kind of universally-applicable rules. If your primary concern is instead the formation and promotion of a simplistic, Manichaean narrative in order to justify attacks on your enemies under cover of pretended “humanitarianism,” while disguising your actual motivations, then defining “chemical warfare” as something uniquely horrible and evil has distinct advantages.
It can be very useful as part of a propaganda narrative when you want to:
1. Demonstrate how the villain in the narrative is somehow qualitatively different/ much more evil than other leaders engaged in similar activities, whether warfare, oppression, or both. The “gas” meme short-circuits any potentially inconvenient whataboutism that might arise,

especially with respect to other countries that are receiving enthusiastic support, rather than condemnation, from “our” government. “Saudi Arabia’s not using “chemical weapons” in Yemen, so it doesn’t count.” “The Israelis sniped those protesters; they didn’t gas them, so it’s clearly not the same kind of thing.” Etc.
2. Evoke associations with a historical event that is seen as uniquely evil, also involving gas. Associative conditioning is much easier than convincing people through rational argumentation.
As a minor aside, “barrel bomb” appears to be a more subtle (and more recent) meme/ shortcut to designate the “bad guys” in the narrative. What, a bomb with better aerodynamics would somehow be morally superior?
Every bomb, bullet, and missle is a chemical weapon(expanding gases).

Don’t forget Woodrow and FDR, assisted by the Brits, lying to get us into WWs I & II. Why American soldiers had to died by the tens of thousands to help the Europeans destroy their fellow Europeans and most of the churches, bridges, factories and basic infrastructure is not a question that has ever been polite to ask. Not to mention then paying for the clean up and (second time around) paying to keep the Ruskies from doing, after WWII, what we helped them to do while it was going on. None of this makes any sense, but then triumphalist history isn’t really history. It’s chest thumping.
You have a good point about the criticism of Jews.
Used to comment some at Taki, and some of the postsdid indeed blame the Jews for everything imaginable and some things that weren’t imaginable.
However, your other remark is also appropriate.
A year or so ago I remarked on a website about the odd issue of Jews leading the fight against “white privilege.” I hunted down Jewish/Gentile statistics and compared them to the similar black/white statistics that are commonly used to prove the existence of white privilege. I noted that these statistics showed pretty clearly that Jewish Privilege is much stronger than White Privilege. (Assuming one accepts such statistics as relevant, as the White Privilege denouncers normally do.)
Oh my word! Hysterics ensued.
I am not in the least anti-Semitic, but I am also not blind. Clearly many (most?) Jews do not think the rules they impose on others should be applied to them. For instance, if it is unfair for any (prestigious) occupation to be held by whites above their proportion of the population, it is equally unfair for Jews to disproportionately occupy those positions. I was not even objecting to the fact of this disproportion, but rather to the hypocrisy of differential application of what are purportedly universal rules.

Considering the idiocy of posters there ‘Hey, first to post. Aren’t I great.’, then a discussion of that at the start of most comment threads on the site, it is seeming logical.

Since dissolution of Takitariat, I’ve been to Taki’s perhaps 3-4 times. Didn’t even bother to read anything.
I guess there will be a diminished readership for a time & it will all, eventually, die out. Without comments, this is not too interesting a place…
I may yet put up an online forum that enables comments directly to TakiMag articles in a “parallel window” mode. At the moment, I am working on something revenue-generating in nature, which takes precedence over providing a new forum for TakiMag’s crazies, so that will wait.
Notice that Taki put up a Coulter column? That’s a red flag that TakiMag already feels the impact of comment-closure. I also am inclined to wonder who that chick-hating doofuss, DeGroot, is related to? Must be someone on the Israeli side of Theodoracopulos’ cousins.
I tried to use that Channel Z to link to Taki’s articels in the waki of him closing comments, so the usual suspects could continue the conversation. The Channel Z mod deleted the whole post, that had already garnered 100 or so comments, and gave me a snarky explanation for it. I have yet to return.
Haven’t seen Coulter, but Taki’s flavor was culture & politics & social commentary. Not just politics & not just a few obsessive themes (IQ, JQ, black crime,..).
DeGroot…I mostly skipped his contributions. Be as it may, Taki’s was different, rather different from unz.com (which is about politics, conspiracies & fringe ideas); or American Renaissance (which is mostly about color of crime & IQ). Other similar sites have too much traffic or are way too loony…

I have a tendency to avoid Inet shit that is obviously based in Millennial developments post-plain vanilla text-based forums that require some modicum of intelligence from posters. That’s just me, and I am one of those horrible meanies who thinks comments should make sense, be sensibly organized to some degree, be grammatically comprehensible, and not diverge into video and links to alien visitor websites. This means I think Twitter is for morons who follow and worship celebrity-think.

Channel Z was a disqus channel (the same mod, a female, had another channel but I forget what it was called) that I received an invite to from taki commenter WhereAreTheVikings. Seemed like a good thing at first, so I posted a link to Goad’s TWTP’d a few Sundays ago, and the mod flushed it and all the comments. She was also deleting other posts, and lots of the comments, then when commenters protested, and they were all deleted and or banned.
I agree with with you on the comments though, and yeah, I don’t twitter. I’ve been lurking around Unz for over a year maybe, but I don’t comment too often. Much of the comment content is as good as the articles here, so I’ll look out for you and the other former taki vets.
